Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on Liberty and Slavery This work has, for the most part, been thought out for several years, and various portions of it reduced to writing. Though we have long cherished the design of preparing it for the press, yet other engagements, conspiring with a spirit of procrastination, have hitherto induced us to defer the execution of this design. Nor should we have prosecuted it, as we have done, during a large portion of our last summer vacation, and the leisure moments of the first two months of the present session of the Unirsity, but for the solicitation of two intelligent and highly-esteemed friends. In submitting the work, as it now is, to the judgment of the truth-loving and impartial reader, we beg leave to offer one or two preliminary remarks. We have deemed it wise and proper to notice only the more decent, respectable, and celebrated among the Abolitionists of the North. Book An Essay on Liberty and Slavery

Download or read book An Essay on Liberty and Slavery written by Albert Bledsoe and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Southern slavery at odds with true liberty? To the contrary, the author clearly shows in this outstanding treatise that Southern slavery as it existed in the Nineteenth Century went a long way toward preserving the fragile social order by denying liberty to those who were as yet unprepared to make proper use of it. This book also demonstrates that the agenda of the Abolitionist movement of the mid-1860s was to utterly destroy constitutional government and to substitute a lawless egalitarianism (slavery for all) in its place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three essays in this volume present an introduction to history of the emancipation of the slaves during the Civil War. The first essay traces the destruction of slavery by discussing the shift from a war for the Union to a war against slavery. The slaves are shown to have shaped the destiny of the nation through their determination to place their liberty on the wartime agenda. The second essay examines the evolution of freedom in occupied areas of the lower and upper South. The struggle of those freed to obtain economic independence in difficult wartime circumstances indicates conflicting conceptions of freedom among former slaves and slaveholders, Northern soldiers and civilians. The third essay demonstrates how the enlistment and military service of nearly 200,000 slaves hastened the transformation of the war into a struggle for universal liberty, and how this experience shaped the lives of former slaves long after the war had ended.
