Book The Frontiers of Europe

Download or read book The Frontiers of Europe written by Federiga Bindi and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and Scuola Superiore della Pubblica Amministrazione (SSPA) publication As the European Union tries to increase both its visibility and its impact on the world stage, it cannot overlook the fact that until now enlargement has formed its most successful foreign policy. But is the EU's enlargement strategy still relevant today? Have the economic crisis and the speculative attack on the euro made the enlargement policy more uncertain? In The Frontiers of Europe, an international cast of leading experts and policymakers examine the EU's prospective borders from new perspectives. Indeed, the frontiers of Europe are as much a matter of values and the EU's international credibility as they are a matter of geographic definition. The contributors highlight the considerable yet different interests of the United States and Russia in the EU's enlargement strategy, paying special attention to the likely effects on the future of U.S.-EU relations. This comprehensive volume focuses not only on the European Union's outward expansion, but also on the internal dynamics within EU states and those states' abilities to deal with pressing issues such as terrorism, immigration, internal crime, and energy security. The EU must prioritize stability in both its enlargement strategy and its relations with the broader international neighborhood. The book raises a note of caution, however: as governance challenges increase, the EU's attention increasingly draws inward, thus diminishing its soft power. The Frontiers of Europe is important reading for anyone trying to understand the current geopolitical landscape of Europe and what it means for the rest of the world.

Book Relations Between the European Union and Latin America

Download or read book Relations Between the European Union and Latin America written by Wolf Grabendorff and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. This book was released on 2005 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume describes, analyses, and evaluates EU-Latin American relation in general with special reference to MERCOSUR and the Carribean. It combines empirical analyses of the development of this relation with a systematic discussion of regionalisation and biregionalism and includes discussions about future developments. In addition, it relates this "biregional" relation into the general framework of global change, U.S.-EU-Latin American relations, and Latin American regionalisation processes. The project summarizes results from a research project, in which leading Latin American and European scholars jointly explored possibilities and limits of EU-Latin American cooperation in the past, present, and future.

Book Critical Geopolitics and Regional Re Configurations

Download or read book Critical Geopolitics and Regional Re Configurations written by Heriberto Cairo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to develop our understanding of the contemporary geopolitical reconfigurations of two regions of the world system with high cultural affinity and traditional close relations: Latin America and Europe. Relations between Latin America and Europe have been interpreted generally in the social sciences as synonyms of interstate relations. However, although States remain the most important actor in the geopolitical scene, they have been deeply reconfigured in recent decades, impacted by transnational dynamics, politics and spaces. This book highlights interregional relations and transnational dynamics between Latin America and Europe from a critical geopolitics perspective, promoting a new look for interregional relations which encompasses international cooperation and development, global policies, borders, inequalities and social movements. It brings attention to the relevance of interregionalism in the current geopolitical reconfiguration of the world system, but also argues for systematic inclusion of relevant new social actors and imaginaries in this traditional sphere of states. These social actors, particularly social movements and practices of contestation, are developing not only "international" bonds but a new "transnational" field, where networks defy traditional territorial orders. This volume seeks to generate a new discussion among scholars of geopolitics, international relations, social theory and social movement studies by encouraging a development of an interregional and transnational perspective of the two regions.

Book The EU as a Global Player

Download or read book The EU as a Global Player written by Fredrik Soderbaum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new look at the European Union's role as a global actor, with special focus on the theme of interregionalism in its relations with key regions around the world: Africa, Asia, South America, North America and Central-Eastern Europe. This new collection clearly shows how, since the end of the Cold War, the European Union has gradually expanded its external relations and foreign policies and become a global actor in world politics. During the last decade interregionalism has become a key component of the EU’s external relations and foreign policies. In fact, the EU has quickly become the hub of a large number of interregional arrangements with a number of regions around the world. Promoting regional and interregional relations not only justifies and enhances the EU’s own existence and efficiency as a global ‘player’, the strategy also promotes the legitimacy and status of other regions, giving rise to a deepening of cross-cutting interregional relations in trade and economic relations, political dialogue, development cooperation, cultural relations and security cooperation. This book was previously published as a special issue of the leading Journal of European Integration.

Book The European Union and the Global South

Download or read book The European Union and the Global South written by Fredrik Söderbaum and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of coherent and effective relations with other regions and countries is one of the most challenging tasks faced by the European Union. This original volume explores the EU's engagement with the global South, focusing on three controversial policy areas: economic cooperation, development cooperation, and conflict management. A discussion of the EU's interregional model - which promotes interaction with regions rather than nation-states - provides a backdrop for case studies of EU policies with regard to Africa, Asia, and Latin America. While disclosing the tensions and overlaps between the EU's foreign policies and those of its member states, the authors also highlight an increasing trend toward successful policy coordination.

Book Pan Caribbean Integration

Download or read book Pan Caribbean Integration written by Patsy Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical part of the history of regionalism in Latin America and the Caribbean is to be found in the widening of the economic and functional relationships among the English-speaking Caribbean to embrace other countries in the Greater Caribbean. Bringing together a range of international experts to explain the broad thrusts of CARICOM’s widening project and the opportunities and challenges it presents, the book pays particular attention to CARICOM’s relations with the French Caribbean territories. Providing a review of the pan-Caribbean landscape this volume notes the impact of these new relationships on internal CARICOM affairs; inter-regional/South-South cooperation; and political and legislative changes in European metropoles of the non-independent territories. It also contemplates recent developments in the region and globally, such as political instability in Brazil and Venezuela, Britain’s decision to leave the European Union and the policies of the Donald Trump administration. This edited collection will be an important resource for students and researchers in Latin American and Caribbean politics, economics, development, history and heritage.
