The present book is cast in the form of a novel to allow factual information not personally collected by the two fugitives, but provided for them by a handful of reliable friends, to be included. Describes anti-Jewish measures of the Slovakian authorities in 1939-41. In spring 1942 Vrbová's family, threatened with deportation, fled to Budapest, where they lived under assumed Hungarian identities. In 1943 they were denounced and sent to a detention camp, from which they were released through bribery. In 1944 Vrbová's father was arrested and killed. After the German occupation of Hungary in March 1944, she and her family returned to Slovakia and lived with forged identity papers in Bratislava. There she met a childhood friend, Rudolf Vrba, who had escaped from Auschwitz and told her about the mass murders. In November 1944 she and her mother were arrested by the Gestapo; she managed to flee, but her mother refused to and perished. Vrbová went to Budapest, where she lived under an assumed identity until the Soviet liberation of the city. After the war she married Vrba and they settled in Great Britain.

The account may well be the first of its kind. In her powerful and raw story, she portrays life in the ghettos and her three years of wandering in disguise as a Polish Catholic, trying to escape from the German onslaught. She also recounts how she served for almost a year as a courier between ghettos for the Zionist youth movement's underground cell in Bendzin, carrying weapons, money, and messages, until she was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943. She was tortured in a high-security prison, but, after a daring escape, she was able to flee to British Mandate Palestine with other members of the resistance. Kukielka's memoir manages to combine both immediacy and hindsight. It stands out for its descriptions of life and activities outside of the ghettos and concentration camps in wartime Poland and for its focus on Zionist youth resistance to the Holocaust. It also provides a somewhat rare female perspective on the Holocaust and offers insight into how much was known about the scale of the Nazi atrocities during the war. Following the book's initial publication in Hebrew in 1944, an unauthorized English-language edition was published in the United States in 1947. The present expanded text includes a scholarly introduction, notes, and a historical afterword, which help to explain and contextualize Kukielka's personal account.

The focus of this book is the comparative study of the history of two Jewish communities in Central Europe, Slovakia and Hungary, during the Holocaust. The study reveals that, although the Jews of Slovakia and Hungary expected to receive reliable information from their leaders regarding how to behave in view of the Nazis’ decrees, they were deported to the extermination camps without knowing where the journey would take them. In the spring of 1944, the Jewish leaders in both countries were fully informed about Auschwitz-Birkenau. Yet, they kept silent in order not to “create panic,” and did not warn the Jewish people of the impending disaster. Estimates suggest that 83% of Slovakia’s Jews, and 65% of Hungary’s Jews perished in the Holocaust. Almost all the Jewish leaders in these two countries survived the Holocaust. The study further shows that, although one of the leaders, Dr. Rudolf Kasztner, saved 1,684 Jews on the ‘Kasztner Train’, not only did he not share the information in his possession regarding the final destination of the deportees to Auschwitz, but he also disseminated false information in Cluj, the town where he was born. His desire to help German Nazi war criminals, by giving them favorable character evidence at the Nuremberg trials, remains a mystery to this day.
