Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the days of oars and coal-fired engines to the computerized era of the 21st century, The Bluejacket’s Manual has been an essential part of the American Sailor’s sea bag for over one hundred years, serving as an introduction to the Navy for new recruits and as a reference book for Sailors of all ranks. Written by a Sailor whose decades of naval service included sea duty in patrol craft, destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers as both an officer and a “white hat,” this newest edition has been overhauled to reflect the current state of the ever-evolving United States Navy and includes chapters on ships and aircraft, uniforms, weapons, damage control, communications, naval customs and ceremonies, security, leadership, pay and benefits, naval missions, military fundamentals, and seamanship. Since Lieutenant Ridley McLean wrote the first edition of this perennial classic, the Navy has grown from fledgling sea power to master of the world’s oceans, and both technology and American culture have changed in ways probably unimaginable in his day. Although The Bluejacket’s Manual has necessarily evolved (through more than twenty revisions) to reflect those changes, its original purpose has remained steadfastly on course. Like its predecessors, this new edition makes no attempt to be a comprehensive textbook on all things naval—to do so today would require a multivolume set that would defy practicality—but it continues to serve two very important purposes. First, it serves as a primer that introduces new recruits to their Navy and helps them make the transition from civilian to Sailor. Second, it serves as a handy reference that Sailors can rely on as a ready source of basic information as they continue their service, whether for only one “hitch” or for an entire career. To that end, this 25th edition has been reorganized to more efficiently reflect those dual purposes, with the first part of the book consisting of “Chapters” that provide introductions and basic explanations that Sailors new to the Navy will find most helpful, and the second part consisting of “Tabs” that deal with specifics—often mere tables—that seasoned Sailors will find useful for reference purposes. Also unique to this latest edition has been the creation of an accompanying website that will serve to keep the book current and provide valuable supplementary material. In total, this latest edition of a recognized Navy classic continues to serve today’s “Bluejackets” and “Old Salts” in the traditional manner while providing a fresh approach that will be welcomed by potential recruits, Navy buffs, and a growing number of Bluejacket Manual collectors.

Book No Escape Redemption s End Book One

Download or read book No Escape Redemption s End Book One written by Bianca Sommerland and published by Bianca Sommerland. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One chance. One mistake. And Axton Hawthorn’s already reached his limit. As a courtless shadow fae on his own, with only his skills as a thief to keep him alive, Axton has nothing to fight for besides his freedom. Until he’s imprisoned for his crimes, then has his prison break foiled by an order of supernaturals who keep exposure from humans to a minimum—or something like that. He wasn’t really paying attention until the last part. His choices are simple. Join them or die. Yeah...he’ll look for another option until they give him a damn good reason not to. Edric ‘King’ Kingston should never have been allowed into the High Guard in The Géillsin. Hellhounds are meant to be chained in the apocalyptic demon realm, not secretly protecting the human one as a high ranking soldier. Leading reluctant young law breakers and teaching them to use their skills for the good of their kind isn’t what he would’ve signed up for, but it’s all he has left to give to prove he’s not the cursed creature he was born as. He owes his life to one man. To a moment when someone saw more in him. The only way to pay that debt is to make sure the man’s son survives. Falling for Axton would be a very bad idea. He’s reckless and defiant. Forces the order to make new rules he can’t work his way around. But Edric can’t look away from the trainwreck he’s brought to the doorstep of the place that represents everything he believes in. And hope Axton’s presence will even their odds against forces threatening to destroy everything they’ve built. While the man he can’t stay away from seems determined to watch it burn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a curse to be haunted by the past. It is worse to be hunted by it... In the realm of Imphallion, there once was a nightmare—a living nightmare known only as the Terror of the East. Nigh invulnerable in his magical black armor and aided by unholy minions, he laid waste to all in his path on his all-consuming quest to bring order to the land. His order. Then, at what should have been his moment of triumph, his will failed. And his army fell. Taking a young noblewoman as hostage, he escaped, vanishing into darkest memory. Years later, Corvis Rebaine is a simple man, content with his loving wife and children. The terrible deeds and glories of his past life are dead and buried along with his former name and its monstrous legacy—until his daughter is taken by fiends under a maniacal young warlord looking to complete the Terror’s conquest. Now, spurred to action by a newborn fury and thirst for vengeance, Rebaine must do the unthinkable—don the dark armor once again, gather his once-loyal cadre of killers, and fight to save both the family he loves and the country he once almost destroyed. And all who stand in his way will have one final thought before death... The Terror has returned. “Action-packed...an intriguingly twisty plot, full of magic and political intrigue.”—Booklist “Superior storytelling and deft dialog make this a top-notch choice . . . filled with dark humor as well as scenes of brutal battle and high magic.”—Library Journal “A powerful fantasy, with well drawn heroes and delightfully wicked, yet complicated, villains. Ari Marmell has made his mark in the genre.”—Paul S. Kemp, author of the Erevis Cale trilogy “A tale that begins where most stories end and features a most unlikely protagonist. Twists of humor leaven this story of desperate people in dangerous times, as a conqueror discovers that perhaps those who live by the sword are sometimes doomed to face the business end of one. A great mix of character and action.”—Robin Hobb, author of Dragon Keeper The text of this edition is unchanged from that of the Del Rey edition.

Book Socrates and Legal Obligation

Download or read book Socrates and Legal Obligation written by R. E. Allen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1981-01-02 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socrates and Legal Obligation was first published in 1981. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Charged with "impiety" and sentenced to death under the law of Athens, Socrates did not try to disprove the charges or to escape death, but rather held to a different kind of rhetoric, aiming not at persuasion but at truth. In Socrates and Legal Obligation, R.E. Allen contends that Plato's works on Socrates' acceptance of death—the Apology and the Crito — should be considered together and as such constitute a profound treatment of law and of obligation to law. Allen's study of Socrates' thought on these vital issues is accompanied by his own translations of the Apology and the Crito.

Book The Escape of Sigmund Freud

Download or read book The Escape of Sigmund Freud written by David Cohen and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “gripping” true story of the founder of psychoanalysis—and how he made it out of Austria after the Nazi takeover (The Independent). Sigmund Freud was not a practicing Jew, but that made no difference to the Nazis as they burned his books in the early 1930s. Goebbels and Himmler wanted all psychoanalysts, especially Freud, dead, and after the annexation of Austria, it became clear that Freud needed to leave Vienna. But a Nazi raid on his house put the Freuds’ escape at risk. With never-before-seen material, this biography reveals details of the last two years of Freud’s life, and the people who helped him in his hour of need—among them Anton Sauerwald, who defied his Nazi superiors to make the doctor’s departure possible. The Escape of Sigmund Freud also delves into the great thinker’s work, and recounts the arrest of Freud’s daughter, Anna, by the Gestapo; the dramatic saga behind the signing of Freud’s exit visa and his eventual escape to London; and how the Freud family would have an opportunity to save Sauerwald’s life in turn. “Full of fascinating insights and anecdotes . . . Cohen draws copiously on the correspondence between Freud and [his nephew] Sam to paint a vivid picture of their complex and deeply troubled family.” —Daily Mail “An illuminating look at the end of the life of a giant of psychology.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: Anyone who has been objectively reading their daily newspapers or watching the evening news has to be wondering what in the world is going on. It seems like conditions all around the globe are beginning to spin out of control. In fact, it is hard to identify a time in history when the world has faced so many complex and potentially devastating problems at the same time. In Escape the Global Storm, A personal guarantee from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Bob Sullivan uncovers the reasons for the growing chaos that is occurring throughout the world today. He takes the reader back four thousand years to the time when God Almighty unveiled His eternal plan for humanity to Abraham. He shows just how important that plan is to God and how it is impacting world events today. This book will change your view of world events, but, more importantly, it will reveal a glorious future that is waiting for all those who put their trust in Jesus Christ. Bob Sullivan grew up in Corning, New York. He met his wife Shirley in 1966 and was married one year later. They currently reside in Connecticut as do their two married children and seven grandchildren. Shirley is a life long Christian but it was not until 1976, that Bob committed his life to Jesus Christ. He began studying Second Coming prophecy after reading Hal Lindsay's Late Great Planet Earth in the late 70s. He has spent hundreds of hours studying Prophecy and has put his knowledge to use by leading several studies on the subject at his home church. He has also conducted two "day long" prophecy conferences and has developed a website that is dedicated to current events in light of Biblical truth. (www.folksinthepews.com)
