Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1.5, National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad (Institute of English Studies), course: English Linguistics, language: English, abstract: It is a descriptive study based on the analysis of essays written by male and female students in two different schools of Multan, Southern Punjab. In the present research, the researcher has collected data from two different schools i.e. one government and one private. The participants for the present research are the students (boys and girls) of secondary level. The data for the present research has been collected from hundred students in the form of essays on My Favourite Personality and My Autobiography. The researcher has employed Pit Corder’s (1967) model for the analysis of data. The data has been analysed, and the researcher has categorized errors committed by the students into different types i.e. verb tense, subject verb disagreement, inappropriate use of article, wrong use of preposition etc. The data is also represented in the form of pie-chart. Furthermore, the frequency of occurrence of different types of errors is also discussed along with some of the possible causes of errors. The findings of the present research highlight that students of government school commit more errors than that of private. Moreover, the findings also suggest that students commit errors not only due to their mother tongue influence, but because of other reasons which are explained in the analysis section. These findings are valuable for academia to devise policies accordingly.

This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a clear tendency to consider the errors committed by learners in the process of learning a foreign language not as a negative aspect but as a natural process in the development of their language skills. In the past, teachers and researchers pondered these errors as something unfavorable, something to prevent from occurring at all costs. In order to regulate this appearance of errors, many researchers in the field of foreign language technical teaching have started to study and track the errors made by these students. Knowing the most common types of errors is an important and necessary step to inform teachers about where to direct their efforts regarding the most problematic areas students face while producing their technical writing assignments in a foreign language. Cases on Error Analysis in Foreign Language Technical Writing provides relevant theoretical foundations and the latest empirical research findings in the area of error analysis in foreign language technical writing. This book also summarizes the experience of teaching a foreign language for professional purposes in various fields of higher education. Covering topics such as error analysis, lexical skills, and writing outputs, this casebook is an essential resource for preservice teachers, educators, administrators, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

Book Lexical Errors and Accuracy in Foreign Language Writing

Download or read book Lexical Errors and Accuracy in Foreign Language Writing written by María del Pilar Agustín Llach and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lexical errors are a determinant in gaining insight into vocabulary acquisition, vocabulary use and writing quality assessment. Lexical errors are very frequent in the written production of young EFL learners, but they decrease as learners gain proficiency. Misspellings are the most common category, but formal errors give way to semantic-based lexical errors as proficiency increases, likewise, the direct influence of the L1 also reduces in favour of more elaborated transfer mechanisms and L2 influence. The different categories of lexical errors indicate the stage of learning. This book uses a study of young EFL learners to suggest that lexical accuracy is a crucial component of writing assessment, and that lexical errors are useful in predicting writing quality.
