Book excerpt: A classic collection of Walter Benjamin's essays, including some of his most celebrated writing Walter Benjamin is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic intellectual figures of this century. Not only was he a thinker who made an enormous impact with his critical and philosophical writings, he shattered disciplinary and stylistic conventions. This collection, introduced by Susan Sontag, contains the most representative and illuminating selection of his work over a twenty-year period, and thus does full justice to the richness and the multi-dimensional nature of his thought. Included in these pages are aphorisms and townscapes, esoteric meditation and reminiscences of childhood, and reflections on language, psychology, aesthetics and politics.

Download or read book The Pre Raphaelites written by Robert de la Sizeranne and published by Parkstone International. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Victorian England, with the country swept up in the Industrial Revolution, the Pre-Raphaelites, close to William Morris’ Arts and Crafts movement, yearned for a return to bygone values. Wishing to revive the pure and noble forms of the Italian Renaissance, the major painters of the circle (such as John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt) favoured realism and biblical themes over the academicism of the time. This work, with its captivating text and rich illustrations, describes with enthusiasm this singular movement which notably inspired Art Nouveau and Symbolism.

Download or read book Rococo written by Victoria Charles and published by Parkstone International. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deriving from the French word rocaille, in reference to the curved forms of shellfish, and the Italian barocco, the French created the term ‘Rococo’. Appearing at the beginning of the 18th century, it rapidly spread to the whole of Europe. Extravagant and light, Rococo responded perfectly to the spontaneity of the aristocracy of the time. In many aspects, this art was linked to its predecessor, Baroque, and it is thus also referred to as late Baroque style. While artists such as Tiepolo, Boucher and Reynolds carried the style to its apogee, the movement was often condemned for its superficiality. In the second half of the 18th century, Rococo began its decline. At the end of the century, facing the advent of Neoclassicism, it was plunged into obscurity. It had to wait nearly a century before art historians could restore it to the radiance of its golden age, which is rediscovered in this work by Klaus H. Carl and Victoria Charles.

Download or read book Ausstellung u d T Nam June Paik music for all senses written by Nam June Paik and published by Walther Konig Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1963, with his first individual show Exposition of Music. Electronic Television at the legendary Galerie Parnass in Wuppertal, Germany, the young Nam June Paik literally created a new genre of exhibition. The visitors, who were greeted in front of the entrance with a freshly slaughtered ox head, were not only confronted with the newness of the electronic image, but also found themselves integrated into a Dadaist scenario staged with prepared pianos, mechanical sound objects along with record players and audio tape installations. Together with documents, photographs and the works of Paik, this catalogue recreates scenes from the original show, letting the works again come to life in their original context. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Nam June Paik: Music for All Senses at Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, February ndash; May 2009. English and German text.
