Book excerpt: - A privileged visual journey through one of the most famous Indian heritage sites Situated in the northern Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is renowned as much for the elegance of its architecture as for the sensuality of its sculpture. Khajuraho has become one of the unmissable sights for any traveler to India, and owes its international reputation to the lavishness of its numerous Hindu shrines. Formerly an important political and religious center, it is thought to have contained up to ninety-five temples, as the many ruins concealed under otherwise-anonymous hillocks scattered throughout the valley attest. Only twenty-five survive. The earliest mention of Khajuraho dates from the seventh century. After the collapse of the Candella kingdom, the site experienced almost four centuries of oblivion, and the once proud city-state turned into a sleepy village nestling in what had become an arid basin for several months of the year. British hunters rediscovered it quite by chance at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Since then, the area has undergone several phases of restoration, as befits one of the leading sites of the world's cultural heritage. The highly unusual nature of its temple depictions has given this area a somewhat 'scandalous' reputation, unleashing, over the years, interpretations of all kinds.

Download or read book The Hindu Erotic written by David Smith and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 2019-03-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps more than any other religion Hinduism is associated in the modern mind with the erotic. The Kama Sutra and the sexual activity portrayed in stone at the great medieval Indian temple complex of Khajuraho are renowned the world over. The classical Hindu exploration of eroticism is manifestly one of the supreme expressions of the human spirit. Hindu sculpture, defined as uniquely able to express inner states of being, is no less able to portray the beauty of eroticism. At the same time, many Hindus see their religion rising above the world of the senses and deprecate western enthusiasm for a perceived erotic India. In this important book David Smith explores the true significance of Hindu eroticism. He shows that while withdrawal from the senses is a major component of Hinduism, it is precisely because the Hindu appreciation of the power of the senses is so very refined that asceticism developed in India as a counter-reaction. He argues that so varied, extensive and diffused is the Hindu idea of the erotic that it is central to understanding the inner heart of Hinduism. Profound and stimulating in equal measure, and illustrated throughout by some of the greatest examples of Hindu erotic art, 'The Hindu Erotic' will be essential reading for anyone interested in Indian religion, sexuality, and South Asian culture.

Download or read book A World Art History and Its Objects written by David Carrier and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is writing a world art history possible? Does the history of art as such even exist outside the Western tradition? Is it possible to consider the history of art in a way that is not fundamentally Eurocentric? In this highly readable and provocative book, David Carrier, a philosopher and art historian, does not attempt to write a world art history himself. Rather, he asks the question of how an art history of all cultures could be written—or whether it is even possible to do so. He also engages the political and moral issues raised by the idea of a multicultural art history. Focusing on a consideration of intersecting artistic traditions, Carrier negotiates the way meaning and understanding shift or are altered when a visual object from one culture, for example, is inserted into the visual tradition of another culture. A World Art History and Its Objects proposes the use of temporal narrative as a way to begin to understand a multicultural art history.
