Cet ouvrage est abondamment illustré d'observations effectuées en situations de travail, professionnel ou scolaire, voire quotidiennes puisque les mêmes activités sont mises en jeu quand on conduit une automobile ou utilise un appareil ménager ou vidéo. Comme tous ses semblables, ce livre ne prétend pas couvrir l'ensemble du domaine. Il laisse notamment de côté une situation de travail qui devient de plus en plus fréquente, celle des interactions homme-ordinateur.
