Book Studies in Early Medieval Latin Glossaries

Download or read book Studies in Early Medieval Latin Glossaries written by Wallace Martin Lindsay and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glossaries are one of the most important sources for our knowledge of early medieval schools, for they provide an accurate records of what texts were studied and how they were understood. But they are also very difficult to access: countless glossaries lie unpublished in manuscript, the relations between them are unknown, and their origins are obscure. The most important contribution to solving these problems was made by Wallace Martin Lindsay (1858-1937), one of the greatest classical scholars ever produced in the British Isles, who in a pioneering series of articles identified the principal glossaries and clarified their relationships; he subsequently oversaw their publication in Glossaria Latina. So comprehensive was Lindsay's work that the subject virtually stood still for half a century; but recent advances in paleography and Insular Latin studies have drawn scholarly attention to glossaries once again. Any future work on glossaries must be based on Lindsay's pioneering articles; to facilitate such work, these articles have been provided with comprehensive indices of the Latin lemmata and sources of the glossaries, together with an account of recent work on medieval glossaries.

Download or read book The Corpus Epinal Erfurt and Leyden Glossaries written by W. Lindsay and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. THIS investigation of the English group of glossaries aims at the standard required in the twentieth century for scientific accuracy. A favourable specimen of what may be called nineteenth century demonstration is Gruber's paper in vol. XX (1907) of the Romanische Forschungen, pp. 393-494: Die Hauptquellen des Corpus-, Épinaler und Erfurter Glossares. Gruber provides much that interests the reader, and his evidence, e.g. for the use of an Amiatinus text for the Bible glosses, will convince anyone who does not take the trouble of verifying each statement. But his method of proving, let us say, a Bible source for a Corpus gloss seems at this date somewhat precarious. The mere occurrence of the word in Dutripon's Concordance of the Vulgate appears to have been deemed sufficient; although the danger of this method stands revealed when the same word turns up later in his list of (let us say) Orosius glosses. Clearly, such demonstration is based not on rock but on sand. Hessels' careful apographs of the Corpus and Leyden Glossaries have made it possible to make this investigation with a hope of success, and one wonders why the problem has not been solved before. There were apparently two obstacles. The presence of batches (corresponding to the sections of Leid.) in the Épinal and Erfurt Glossaries was not detected. And ko one seems to have thought that an English compiler would be likely to borrow some material from already existing Continental glossaries (Abstrusa, Abolita, etc.), while he took the remainder from marginalia in English MSS. of authors (Orosius, the Bible, etc.). Once these two simple facts are seen, the rest is easy. Almost too easy, for now and then one is tempted to forget the virtue 'aliqua nescire.' W. M. LINDSAY.

Book From Glosses to Dictionaries

Download or read book From Glosses to Dictionaries written by Chiara Benati and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents—through a series of nine high quality essays by international scholars—the beginnings of the lexicographic tradition and the appearance of the first mono- and multilingual dictionaries in various language areas across the world, paying particular attention to their dependence on glosses and glossaries. The contributions analyze, on the basis of significant case studies, how dictionaries first emerged in a wide spectrum of cultures, ranging from Greek Antiquity to 9th-century Japan, from Medieval Britain to 15th-century Poland. In this way, the book highlights both similarities and differences among these traditions, and allows a global and comparative approach to the history of lexicography in its earliest phases, a topic which, up until now, has usually been studied only within single languages and cultures.

Book Ashgate Critical Essays on Early English Lexicographers

Download or read book Ashgate Critical Essays on Early English Lexicographers written by Christine Franzen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglo-Saxon lexicography studies Latin texts and words. The earliest English lexicographers are largely unidentifiable students, teachers, scholars and missionaries. Materials brought from abroad by early teachers were augmented by their teachings and passed on by their students. Lexicographical material deriving from the early Canterbury school remains traceable in glossaries throughout this period, but new material was constantly added. Aldhelm and Ælfric Bata, among others, wrote popular, much studied hermeneutic texts using rare, exotic words, often derived from glossaries, which then contributed to other glossaries. Ælfric of Eynsham is a rare identifiable early English lexicographer, unusual in his lack of interest in hermeneutic vocabulary. The focus is largely on context and the process of creation and intended use of glosses and glossaries. Several articles examine intellectual centres where scholars and texts came together, for example, Theodore and Hadrian in Canterbury; Aldhelm in Malmesbury; Dunstan at Christ Church, Canterbury; Æthelwold in Winchester; King Æthelstan's court; Abingdon; Glastonbury; and Worcester.

Book Medieval Welsh Literature and Its European Contexts

Download or read book Medieval Welsh Literature and Its European Contexts written by Victoria Flood and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-07-02 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situates Celtic languages and literatures in relation to European movements, in the tradition of Helen Fulton's groundbreaking research. Professor Helen Fulton's influential scholarship has pioneered our understanding of the links between Welsh and European medieval literature. The essays collected here pay tribute to and reflect that scholarship, by positioning Celtic languages and literatures in relation to broader European movements and conventions. They include studies of texts from medieval Wales, Ireland, and the Welsh March, alongside discussions of continental multicultural literary engagements, understood as a closely related and analogous field of enquiry. Contributors present new investigations of Welsh poetry, from the pre-Conquest poetry of the princes to late-medieval and early Tudor urban subject matters; Welsh Arthuriana and Irish epic; the literature of the Welsh March - including the writings of the Gawain-poet; and the multilingual contexts of medieval and post-medieval Europe, from the Dutch speakers of polyglot medieval Calais to the Romantic poet Shelley's probable ownership of a Welsh Bible.
