Book excerpt: Censorship had an extraordinary impact on Alban Berg's opera Lulu, composed by the Austrian during the politically tumultuous years spanning 1929 to 1935. Based on two plays by Frank Wedekind that were repeatedly banned from publishing and performing up until the end of World War I, thelibretto was in turn censored by Berg himself when he submitted it to authorities in Nazi Germany in 1934. When Berg died before the opera was debuted the next season, the third act was censored by his widow, Helene, and his former teacher, Arnold Schoenberg.In "Taken By the Devil", author Margaret Notley uncovers the unusual and uniquely generative role of censorship throughout the lifecycle of Berg's great opera. Placing the opera and its source material in a wider cultural context, Notley provides close readings of the opera's libretto and score toreveal the precise techniques employed by the composer in negotiating the censors. She goes on to explore the ways Berg chose to augment rather than flatten the discrepancies between various performances of the earlier plays and the opera itself, adding further dimensions of interpretation to thework. Elegantly readable, "Taken by the Devil" is the most meticulously researched and nuanced study of Lulu to date, and illuminates the process of politically-driven censorship of theater, music, and the arts during the tumultuous early twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Around 1900, German and Austrian actresses had allure and status, apparent autonomy, and unconventional lifestyles. They presented a complex problem socially and aesthetically, one tied to the so-called Woman Question and to the contested status of modernity. For modernists, the actress's socioeconomic mobility and defiance of gender norms opened space to contest social and moral strictures, and her mutability offered a means to experiment with identity. For conservatives, on the other hand, female performance could support antifeminist convictions and validate masculine authority by positing woman as nothing but a false surface shaped by productive male forces. Influential male-authored texts from the period thereby disavowed female subjectivity per se by equating "woman" and "actress." S. E. Jackson establishes the actress as a key figure in a discursive matrix surrounding modernity, gender, and subjectivity. Her central argument is that because the figure of the actress bridged such varied fields of thought, women who were actresses had a consequential impact that resonated in and far beyond the theater - but has not been explored. Examining archival sources such as theater reviews and writing by actresses in direct relation to canonical aesthetic and philosophical texts, The Problem of the Actress reconstructs the constitutive role that womenplayed on and off the stage in shaping not only modernist theater aesthetics and performance practices, but also influential strains of modern thought.

Book excerpt: A re-examination of the evidence for the existence of a historical Faust figure which shows that the popular belief that such a figure existed is not well-founded. In the light of new evidence regarding the origins of Valdes and Cornelius in Marlowe's play the theories of earlier scholars are reconsidered with the result that Marlowe is shown to have used sources other than the English Faust Book for his play. Marlowe's play is also compared to the continental dramatic tradition and is shown to be more closely linked to this than it is to any contemporary English tradition. Evidence is presented to show that Marlowe was not the atheist he is believed to have been, but rather a staunch Lutheran.
