Book The Whole Familiar Colloquies of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Whole Familiar Colloquies of Desiderius Erasmus, of Rotterdam In the Colloquy concerning Visiting of Holy Places, the super stitious and immoderate affection of some is restrained, who think it to be the chiefest piety to have visited Jerusalem; and thither do old bishops run over so great tracts of land and sea, leaving their charge, which they should rather have taken care of. Thither also do princes run, leaving their families and their dominions. Thither do husbands run, leaving their wives and children at home, whose manners and chastity it were necessary to have been guarded by them. Thither do young men and women run, with the hazard of their manners and integrity. And some go the second time, ay, do nothing else all their life-long; and in the meantime the pretence of religion is made the excuse for their superstition, inconstancy, folly, and rashness and he that deserts his family contrary to the doctrine of St. Paul bears away the bell for sanctimony, and thinks himself completely religious. Paul (1 Tim. V. 8) boldly says, But if any provide not for his own, and especially those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. And yet Paul in this place seems to speak of widows that neglect their children and grandchildren, and that under pretence of religion, while they give themselves up to the service of the church. What would he say of husbands who leave their tender children and young wives, and that in a poor condition, to take a journey to J eru salem? I will produce but one example out of many, and not so long ago but that the grandchildren are still living, whom the great damage they sustained does not suffer to forget what was done. Book The Life of Erasmus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Erasmus Classic Reprint written by John Jortin and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Erasmus Le clerc, whilst he was concerned in publishing an Edition of the Works of Erasmus at Leyden, drew up his Life, in French, collected principally from his Letters, and inserted it in the Bibliotheque Choisie, and had the pleasure to find that it was favourably received by the Public. It is so performed, in the main, that I could not hope to do it in a better manner, and was not inclined to do it in another manner. It is therefore taken, as a ground-work to build upon, and is translated, not superstitiously and closely, but with much freedom, and with more attention to things than to words. I found his way of thinking and judging, for the most part, correspondent with mine; and I have seldom had occasion to declare a dissent from him. But at the same time continual additions are made, not only with relation to the history of those days, but to the life of Erasmus, especially where Le Clerc grew more remiss, either wearied with the task, or called off from these to other labours. Thus we in this country, as we Shall see in a future chapter, have a Special interest in him. By promoting the study of the Scriptures, this work aided the progress of the Reformation. Download or read book Erasmus written by Percy Society Corbett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Erasmus': "Institutio Principis Christiani" Erasmus was born at Rotterdam in 1467, son of Roger Gerard and a certain Margaret, daughter of a physician at Sieben Bergen. At the age of nine he entered the school at Deventer, where he made the acquaintance of Adrian, destined to become successively tutor to Charles V., Cardinal-Regent of Spain, and Supreme Pontiff. At Deventer he gave some promise of future brilliance, showing a strong leaning to the classics and composing Latin verses. In 1478 his father and mother died, leaving him and his elder brother under guardians. The latter, according to a letter written late in life to Grunnius, Papal Secretary (Ep. App. CDXLII.), either fraudulently made away with or negligently lost all the family property, and the brothers were prevailed upon by their relations to enter monasteries. Erasmus became an Augustinian Canon of St. Gregory's at Steyn. He was much too delicate for the alternate fasting and heavy feeding of the monks, and was most unhappy in this situation. His main consolation was the library at his disposal. After being ordained priest in 1492, he became, through the Prior of his house, Secretary to the Bishop of Cambrai. The Bishop provided him with an allowance and permitted him to go to Paris, where he entered the "domus pauperum" in the College of Montague. Here he began studying Greek and teaching it to the pupils whom he took in to supplement his resources. It was in this way that he won the friendship of Lord Mountjoy, and also became acquainted with the Lord of Vere, whose wife, Anna Bersala, was to become his patron. In 1497 he accompanied Mountjoy to England, where he met Thomas More, Colet, Grocyn, and Linacre, and spent some time at Oxford as the guest of Richard Charnock, Prior of St. Mary's College. At Oxford he found a warm welcome for his wit and learning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Erasmus: With Historical Remarks on the State of Literature Between the Tenth and Sixteenth Centuries But, in addition to these spoils of Greece, the Romans possessed in a high degree of excellence, a science, which, though it conduces more than any to public and private happiness, had been totally disregarded by the Greeks. To them, Jurisprudence as a liberal pursuit, was unknown their legal instruments and forensic proceedings were drawn up by a description of persons in little estimation among them, called pragmatists, or practitioners; but the knowledge of the laws of their country was never followed by them, as an occupation conferring importance and cele brity. Among the Romans, jurisprudence was always highly esteemed; it was studied on the most liberal principles, professed by the most distinguished persons, and led to the highest honours of the state. Maclehose of Glasgow; the Essay on "Marcus Aurelius" was printed in the Madras Christian College Magazine; and the remaining papers were contributed to the British and Foreign Evangelical Review. To the Editors and Publishers concerned I am indebted for permission to republish. Some of the papers are rather out of date, and had I been writing them now, I should probably have expressed myself differently on one or two points, but I have judged it better on the whole to reprint without alteration. Book Savonarola Erasmus and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Savonarola Erasmus and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by Henry Hart Milman and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Savonarola, Erasmus, and Other Essays Some deal with questions and books of passing interest;others have an undoubted permanent value. Of these the present publication contains a selection. With so much that claimed careful consideration it was by no means easy to contract the choice within the limit of a single volume, but it has been thought best in the first instance so to confine it, leaving for future consideration the advisability of a further reproduction. Many, and among them perhaps the most brilliant, of Dean Milman's essays relate to persons and events which have since been treated of in his "Histories," and having there received his latest revision, find in them their proper and final place. But there are others, such as those on Savonarola and Erasmus, which take up an epoch of ecclesiastical history beyond the scope of the 'Histories of Christianity, ' and cannot, it is believed, fail to be read with interest. The articles on 'The Development of Christian Doctrine, ' and 'The Relation of the Clergy to the People, ' are the only two out of the whole number which are mainly or exclusively of a controversial character. But they nowhere for a moment transgress the bounds of strictest courtesy and candour, and many persons who remember their temperate but firm discussion of problems, which cannot yet be regarded as of no practical importance, having expressed a desire that they should be reprinted, it was not possible to exclude them from the present series.
