Book Techniques for Multiaxial Creep Testing

Download or read book Techniques for Multiaxial Creep Testing written by D. J. Gooch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and assessment of modern high temperature plant demands an understanding of the creep and rupture behaviour of materials under multi axial stress states. Examples include thread roots in steam turbine casing bolts, branch connections in nuclear pressure vessels and blade root fixings in gas or steam turbine rotors. At one extreme the simple notch weakening/notch strengthening characterization of the material by circumferentially vee-notched uniaxial rupture tests, as specified in many national standards, may be sufficient. These were originally intended to model thread roots and their conservatism is such that they frequently are considered adequate for design purposes. At the other extreme full size or model component tests may be employed to determine the safety margins built into design codes. This latter approach is most commonly used for internally pressurized components, particularly where welds are involved. However, such tests are extremely expensive and the use of modern stress analysis techniques combined with a detailed knowledge of multiaxial properties offers a more economic alternative. Design codes, by their nature, must ensure conservatism and are based on a material's minimum specified properties. In the case of high temperature components the extension of life beyond the nominal design figure, say from 100000 to 200000 h, offers very significant economic benefits. However, this may require a more detailed understanding of the multiaxial behaviour of a specific material than was available at the design stage.

Book High Temperature Miniature Specimen Test Methods

Download or read book High Temperature Miniature Specimen Test Methods written by Wei Sun and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-10-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Miniature Specimen Test Methods, for the first time in book format, focuses on a comprehensive and thorough introduction to a range of high temperature, miniaturized test methods at elevated temperatures which are used to obtain "bulk creep or fatigue properties from a small volume of material. Complicated mathematics and modelling are not involved. It is intended to be of use to a wide range of audience of engineers (e.g. designers, manufacturers, metallurgists, stress analysts), researchers (e.g. materials scientists) and students (undergraduate and postgraduate) in the field of high-temperature material and structural integrity assessment. Specific novel features of the book include 1] theoretical basis of each test method; 2], data interpretation method of each test method; and 3] specific application of each test method. - Provides the theoretical basis of each test method - Includes the data interpretation method of each test method - Presents specific applications and the limitations of each test method, along with opportunities for future developments

Book Experimental Techniques in Materials and Mechanics

Download or read book Experimental Techniques in Materials and Mechanics written by C. Suryanarayana and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental Techniques in Materials and Mechanics provides a detailed yet easy-to-follow treatment of various techniques useful for characterizing the structure and mechanical properties of materials. With an emphasis on techniques most commonly used in laboratories, the book enables students to understand practical aspects of the methods and derive the maximum possible information from the experimental results obtained. The text focuses on crystal structure determination, optical and scanning electron microscopy, phase diagrams and heat treatment, and different types of mechanical testing methods. Each chapter follows a similar format: Discusses the importance of each technique Presents the necessary theoretical and background details Clarifies concepts with numerous worked-out examples Provides a detailed description of the experiment to be conducted and how the data could be tabulated and interpreted Includes a large number of illustrations, figures, and micrographs Contains a wealth of exercises and references for further reading Bridging the gap between lecture and lab, this text gives students hands-on experience using mechanical engineering and materials science/engineering techniques for determining the structure and properties of materials. After completing the book, students will be able to confidently perform experiments in the lab and extract valuable data from the experimental results.
