Book Equilibrium of a High Current Electron Ring in a Modified Betatron Accelerator

Download or read book Equilibrium of a High Current Electron Ring in a Modified Betatron Accelerator written by C. A. Kapetanakos and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses the dynamics of an ultra-high current electron ring in a modified betatron configuration. Our studies include analytical and numerical results for both 'cold' and 'hot' rings. It has been found that the walls surrounding the ring and toroidal effects (hoop stresses) play a very important role in the dynamics of the ring, even when the wall conductivity is infinite. For finite wall conductivity, the diffusion of the ring's self magnetic field profoundly impacts its dynamics in general the equilibrium could be lost if means are not provided to compensate for this effect. In addition, it has been found that the Grad B drift is not important, except when the bounce frequency is very small. The general conclusion of these studies is that equilibrium states of ultra-high current rings in a modified betatron configuration exist over a wide range of parameters. These states are accessible and within the realm of existing pulsed power technology.

Book Dynamics of a High Current Electron Ring in a Conventional Betatron Accelerator

This book was released on 1983 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical and computer simulation results are reported on the dynamics of a high current electron ring in a conventional betatron accelerator. These studies include, in addition to the external and self fields, the effects of surrounding walls and toroidal corrections. Results show that, in contrast with the modified betatron, the equilibrium in a conventional betatron is incompatible with either large thermal energy spread or emittance. However, as in the modified betatron, the energy mismatch and the diffusion of the self magnetic field impose stringent constraints on the accelerator. Finally, in both devices, it is necessary to keep the ratio of the ring to the torus minor radii much less than unity. (Author).

Book Stability Properties of an Intense Relativistic Nonneutral Electron Ring in a Modified Betatron Accelerator

Download or read book Stability Properties of an Intense Relativistic Nonneutral Electron Ring in a Modified Betatron Accelerator written by Hans S. Uhm and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equilibrium and stability properties of an intense electron ring located at the midplane of an externally applied mirror field are investigated within the framework of the linearized Vlasov-Maxwell equations, including the important influence of equilibrium self fields and an applied field in the torodial direction. It is assumed that the ring is thin and that nu/gamma(sub b) “1, where nu is Budker's parameter and gamma(sub b)mc-squared is the characteristic electron energy. Equilibrium and stability properties are calculated for the choice of equilibrium distribution function in which all electrons have the same value of energy in a frame of reference rotating with angular velocity in the minor cross section of the ring, and a Lorentzian distribution in canonical angular momentum. Negative-mass and resistance-wall stability properties are calculated, and a closed dispersion relation is obtained for the case where the ring is located inside a toroidal conductor with finite resistivity and minor radius much less than the major radius. One of the most important features of the stability analysis is that the negative-mass instability in a high-current ring can be stabilized by equilibrium self-field effects in circumstances where the self fields are sufficiently intense. Moreover, a modest spread Delta in canonical angular momentum can stabilize the resistive-wall instability.

Download or read book Physics Of Nonneutral Plasmas written by Ronald C Davidson and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2001-10-22 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonneutral plasma is a many-body collection of charged particles in which there is not overall charge neutrality. The diverse areas of application of nonneutral plasmas include: precision atomic clocks, trapping of antimatter plasmas and antihydrogen production, quantum computers, nonlinear vortex dynamics and fundamental transport processes in trapped nonneutral plasmas, strongly-coupled one-component plasmas and Coulomb crystals, coherent radiation generation in free electron devices, such as free electron lasers, magnetrons and cyclotron masers, and intense charged particle beam propagation in periodic focusing accelerators and transport systems, to mention a few examples. Physics of Nonneutral Plasmas is a graduate-level text — complete with 138 assigned problems and the results from several classic experiments — which covers a broad range of topics related to the fundamental properties of collective processes and nonlinear dynamics of one-component and multispecies charged particle systems in which there is not overall charge neutrality. The subject matter is treated systematically from first principles, using a unified theoretical approach, and the emphasis is on the development of basic concepts that illustrate the underlying physical processes in circumstances where intense self fields play a major role in determining the evolution of the system. The theoretical analysis includes the full influence of dc space charge effects on detailed equilibrium, stability and transport properties. The statistical models used to describe the properties of nonneutral plasmas are based on the nonlinear Vlasov-Maxwell equations, the macroscopic fluid-Maxwell equations, or the Klimontovich-Maxwell equations, as appropriate, and extensive use is made of theoretical techniques developed in the description of multispecies electrically-neutral plasmas, as well as established techniques in classical mechanics, electrodynamics and statistical physics.Physics of Nonneutral Plasmas emphasizes basic physics principles, and the thorough presentation style is intended to have a lasting appeal to graduate students and researchers alike. Because of the advanced theoretical techniques developed for describing one-component charged particle systems, this book serves as a useful companion volume to Physics of Intense Charged Particle Beams in High Energy Accelerators by Ronald C Davidson and Hong Qin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on High-Brightness Accelerators was held at the Atholl Palace Hotel, Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland, from July 13 through July 25, 1986. This publication is the Proceedings of the Institute. This ASI emphasized the basic physics and engineering of the rela tively new and fast-emerging field of high-brightness particle accelera tors. These machines are high- to very-high-current (amperes to hundreds of kiloamperes), modest-voltage (megavolt to tens of megavolts) devices, and as such are opposed to those historically used for high-energy physics studies (i.e., gigavolt and higher energies and rather low currents). The primary focus of the Institute was on the physics of the accelerator and the beam, including the dynamics, equilibria, and insta bilities of high-current beams near the space-charge limit; accelerator engineering techniques; and the applications of high-brightness beams in areas such as free-electron lasers, synchrotron-radiation sources, food processing, and heavy- and light-ion fusion. The Institute concentrated on bringing together several diverse but related communities which, we hope, benefited from this opportunity to interact: the North American activity in machine technology, engineer ing, and diagnostics with the strong European theoretical community; the basic beam physicists with the engineering technologists.

Book Studies of the Electron Ring Dynamics in a Modified Betatron for Large Ring Displacements from the Minor Axis

Download or read book Studies of the Electron Ring Dynamics in a Modified Betatron for Large Ring Displacements from the Minor Axis written by S. J. Marsh and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two dimensional 3V particle in cell (PIC) computer code is used to study the electron ring dynamics in a magnetic field configuration that is very similar to that of the modified betatron experiment. The electron ring dynamics has been simulated over approximately seventy five revolutions around the major axis, i.e., over several bounce periods. By comparing the electron ring dynamics in an idealized magnetic fields with that in the experiment, it has been determined that the field index spatial fluctuations that occur in the experiment are harmless to high current rings. In addition, the computer simulation results have confirmed our theoretical predictions concerning the variations of the ring's equilibrium position with the vertical field as well as the existence, in the ring centroid instability gap, of ring orbits having figure eight (8) shape. Keywords: High current accelerators; Modified Betatron: Computer simulation; Budker Parameter.

Download or read book External Injection Into a High Current Modified Betatron Accelerator written by F. Mako and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By axially tapering the current density at each end of an axial pinch a scheme is developed for injecting electrons across magnetic field lines into a modified betatron accelerator. This scheme produces only a minimal perturbation to the circulating electron beam. The axial pinch provides beam equilibrium in the transverse field and the tapering reduces the non-adiabatic growth of the perpendicular particle velocity from 0.5 c to .05 c for the parameters of the NRL modified betatron.
