Book Harper s Atlas of American History Selected From the American Nation Series

Download or read book Harper s Atlas of American History Selected From the American Nation Series written by Dixon Ryan Fox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harper's Atlas of American History, Selected From the American Nation Series: With Map Studies An atlas is, of course, primarily a work of reference. Yet an orderly ar rangement, as in a museum, may suggest the development of process or of life; and as a curator might carefully point out the illustrative value of such specimens and models, so here the editor has appended a short essay intended to suggest some ways in which the historical map may be of service. But he would be a sanguine teacher who expected students from these few reflections to realize for themselves the possibilities of an atlas. Consequently there is joined with it an extended course in the historical geography of the United States, in which the student, by observing these directions, works out on outline maps, easily procured, the record of a development in Space as well as in time, following the national history with his hand as well as his eye. The studies are closely integrated with the atlas, by specific reference, so that it will seldom be necessary to look beyond its pages for essential facts. In many cases, however, additional informa tion is included in the text, which the student is asked to transfer into graphic form. Citations to Professor Bassett's Short History of the United States, New York, 1913, and, for more elaborate treatment, to the American Nation Series, make the studies available as supplementary to a classroom course, or as a course in themselves, to be rounded out by lectures and library research. Naturally map studies may be cut to meet the individual requirements, and, indeed, the book is so arranged that the atlas may be used alone without reference to Part II. Book The French War and the Revolution

Download or read book The French War and the Revolution written by William Milligan Sloane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French War and the Revolution: With Maps This book is the second of a series of four, each of which, while complete in itself, is to form part of a con nected history of the United States down to our own time. The limits of this volume are the years 1756 and 1783. This period has a unity in many ways. From the beginning of the old French War to the end of the Revolution the English commonwealths in America were both learning the necessity of union and growing conscious of a common destiny. It might even be said that while in one of the two conflicts they were hostile to France and in the other allied with her yet nevertheless such a connection is in itself substantive. Both illus trate phases of French history. A still stronger mark of the epoch is the continuous development in action of common exertion for the common welfare. But the strongest and most philosophical unity is in the evola tion of a new theory of government during these years by the application of English principles to American con ditions. The author hopes that while the narrative in the following pages is necessarily brief it is full enough to illustrate this essential conception in American his tory. Book History of the United States Or Republic of America

Download or read book History of the United States Or Republic of America written by Emma Willard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States, or Republic of America: With a Chronological Table and a Series of Progressive Maps But most minds find it difficult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness. Every student or reader of history should begin with that of his own country; and the history of the United States is on some ac counts, a more safe and profitable study than that of any other nation.
