Book excerpt: "The first English translation directly from the original languages. Together with an extensive introduction that summarizes the document's contents, locates the writing within the early battle between "Catholic" and "Gnostic" Christians, and examines the Epistle's potential contribution to our understanding of the early church; a side-by-side presentation of the Ethiopic and Coptic versions that allows easy comparison of the two; detailed notes to the translation that bring out verbal and thematic connections between the Epistle and other religious and secular writings; and textual notes that explore possible reconstructions where the single Coptic manuscript is fragmentary and identify significant differences among the Ethiopic manuscripts. Also included is an up-to-date bibliography for further study and a comprehensive index of canonical, apocryphal, pseudepigraphical, classical, gnostic, and early church texts quoted and discussed."--

Book Letters from the Pillar Apostles

Download or read book Letters from the Pillar Apostles written by Darian R Lockett and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than reading the Catholic Epistles in isolation from each other - understanding their individual historical situations as the single, determinative context for their interpretation - this study argues that a proper understanding of these seven letters must equally attend to their collection and placement within the New Testament canon. Resisting the judgment of much of historical-critical analysis of the New Testament, namely that the concept of canon actually obscures the meaning of these texts, it is the canonical process by which the texts were composed, redacted, collected, arranged, and fixed in a final canonical form that constitutes a necessary interpretive context for these seven letters. This study argues that through reception history and paratextual and compositional evidence one can discern a collection consciousness within the Catholic Epistles such that they should be read and interpreted as an intentional, discrete canonical sub-collection set within the New Testament. Furthermore, the work argues that such collection consciousness, though not necessarily in the preview of the original authors (being perhaps unforeseen, yet not unintended), is neither anachronistic to the meaning of the letters nor antagonistic to their composition.

Book Tradition and Composition in the Epistula Apostolorum

Download or read book Tradition and Composition in the Epistula Apostolorum written by Julian Victor Hills and published by Augsburg Fortress Publishing. This book was released on 1990 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rediscovered at the end of the nineteenth century in Coptic and Ethiopic versions, the Epistle of the Apostles (Epistula Apostolorum) is a "revelation dialogue, " in which the risen Jesus converses with his disciples before his ascension and delivers instructions for strengthening the young church. In the first major study in English of this ancient document, Julian V. Hills probes its remarkable witness to the traditions that circulated in Jesus' name in the second century. Hills tackles the document's literary framework, collecting and assessing signals to its composition. In detailed analyses of passages about Jesus' miracles, the first appearance of the risen Lord, the second advent, and the commissioning of the Apostles, Hills shows how older traditions were reshaped and interpreted according to the distinctive communal situation and theological vision of the author. In Hills's careful and insightful work, scholars and students of early Christianity will find clues to the elusive reality of Christianity in the second century. This ancient Epistle can now become a prominent conversation partner among many newly accessible early post-resurrection traditions.
