Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind' by James Mill is a comprehensive inquiry into the study of mental phenomena, focusing on the resolution of complex facts into simpler ones. Mill's association psychology examines the links between conscious experience and the ideas it generates, highlighting the importance of sense experience and language in shaping our thoughts, emotions, and actions. This work is a must-read for anyone interested in the science of character formation, and its insights into the workings of the mind are still relevant today. With extended comments by John Stuart Mill, Alexander Bain, George Grote, and Andrew Findlater, this second edition is an excellent resource for students and scholars alike.

Book Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind

Download or read book Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind written by James Mill and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excerpt from the introductory to Volume II: SOME NAMES WHICH REQUIRE A PARTICULAR EXPLANATION. We have now seen that, in what we call the mental world, Consciousness, there are three grand classes of phenomena, the most familiar of all the facts with which we are acquainted, - SENSATIONS, IDEAS, and the TRAIN OF IDEAS. We have examined a number of the more complicated cases of Consciousness; and have found that they all resolve themselves into the three simple elements, thus enumerated. We also found it necessary to shew, for what ends, and in what manner, marks were contrived of sensations and ideas, and by what combinations they were made to represent, expeditiously, trains of those states of consciousness. Some marks or names, however, could not be explained, till some of the more complicated states of consciousness were unfolded; these also are names so important, and so peculiar in their mode of signification, that a very complete understanding of them is required. It is to the consideration of these remarkable cases of Naming that we now proceed.* *Under the modest title of an explanation of the meaning of several names, this chapter presents us with a series of discussions of some of the deepest and most intricate questions in all metaphysics. Like Plato, the author introduces his analysis of the most obscure among the complex general conceptions of the human mind, in the form of an enquiry into the meaning of their names. The title of the chapter gives a very inadequate notion of the difficulty and importance of the speculations contained in it, and which make it, perhaps, the profoundest chapter of the book. It is almost as if a treatise on chemistry were described as an explanation of the names air, water, potass, sulphuric acid, &c. - Ed. * * * * "Many questions might be asked, which I shall refrain from asking. For I find Mr. [Bertrand] Russell's manner and method more interesting than his message. And mainly I am impressed by the resemblance between this analysis of mind and another analysis by James Mill, entitled "Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind," published in 1829, which I regard as the best statement of the associational psychology. In both works, "analysis" stands for the same kind of operation; and the results of analysis are not far apart. In James Mill's chapter on "Consciousness" Mr. Russell may find very nearly his own analysis of consciousness, at least his analysis of mind; and in Mill's chapter on "Belief" he may find an analysis which might almost be his own analysis of consciousness. In both chapters he will find Mill fighting with him to establish his major contention that there is nothing in "consciousness" (or in mind) but a relation of content. And his major thesis, that "physics and psychology are not distinguished by their material " is precisely Mill's. For what, after all, are the "neutral entities" of neo-realism but Mill's "phenomena" in other terms? Altogether, it would be very interesting to be told what analysis has accomplished in ninety-two years. Equally striking, however, in Russell and Mill, is the resemblance in style. One notes the same assumption of logical rigor, the same indifference to hostile opinion, the same artificial clearness, and the same finality of statement. But there is also a difference. James Mill's analysis was a savage attempt to convince; one wonders whether Mr. Russell expects to do more than perplex." -The Philosophical Review, Volume 31 [1922]

Book excerpt: "This second volume of the Analysis of the phenomena of the human mind presents a wide ranging examination of the mind and physical sensations. The beginning chapter (Chapter XIV) discusses and provides definitions of a number of names and relative terms associated with mind processes and mental phenomena. The remaining chapters address the senses; motivation; distinctions between the intellectual and active powers of the mind; the will; intention; social influences and determinants; and, aspects of pleasurable and painful sensations, along with their causes. Book The Transnational Legacy of Jean Piaget

Download or read book The Transnational Legacy of Jean Piaget written by Regina Helena de Freitas Campos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of studies on the circulation of Jean Piaget’s ideas and works between Europe and Latin America, and how this transnational legacy influenced different fields of research and practice, such as psychology, education and philosophy. The volume brings together contributions presented at the International Colloquium Jean Piaget in Brazil and Latin America, held during the 38th Annual Helena Antipoff Meeting, organized by the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in collaboration with the University of Geneva, Switzerland. The book is organized in three parts. Chapters in the first part analyze Piaget’s role as a builder of an international network in psychology, education and peace promotion in the 20th century, with a special focus on the circulation of his ideas and works between Switzerland and France. The second part focuses on historical and contemporary dialogues, conflicts and controversies between Piaget and other authors, such as Henri Wallon, Carl Rogers, Jürgen Habermas, and, especially, Helena Antipoff, the Russian-Brazilian psychologist and educator who was one of the first researchers to introduce Piaget in Brazil and to establish a bridge between Latin America and the Geneva school of psychological and educational sciences. Finally, chapters in the third part of the book explore different aspects of the reception and appropriation of Piaget’s works and ideas in the Brazilian context. The Transnational Legacy of Jean Piaget: A View from the 21st Century will be of interest to researchers in different fields within the human and social sciences, such as developmental, educational and school psychologists; educators; philosophers and historians of psychology and education interested in understanding how Piaget’s progressist ideas have contributed to the development of psychological and educational sciences in Europe and Latin America. Some chapters of this book were originally written in Portuguese and French and translated into English with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do people lie, and how can lies be detected? There is now a substantial psychological literature relating to these fundamental questions, and this book reviews the relevant knowledge in detail, before focusing on guidelines for best practice in detecting deception. Psychological research is now available on individual differences in lying behaviour (gender differences, age differences and personality). There is also interesting research evidence of the ways in which deception is reflected both in real objective non-verbal behaviour and also in the perceived non-verbal cues which can help or mislead the observer in detecting deception. Although the book does include a major survey of the physiological aspects of deception and the polygraph as a method of detection, it also includes a thorough review of current knowledge of content analysis and validity assessment of speech and written statements. The book ends by discussing how professionals can improve lie detection by focusing on key aspects of the behaviour of the liar and by awareness and control of their own behaviour. Covers all three aspects of deception?non-verbal cues, speech and written statement analysis, and physiological responses Focuses on the behaviour and perceptions of the observer which can hinder the process of detection Based on the author?s expert review of the research and evidence, and on his practical experience and connections with several police forces "Without doubt, this book is the most important contribution to research and practice in lie detection to be published in years. For the first time research about verbal, nonverbal and physiological correlates of truth telling and deception are reviewed comprehensively in one text. This book will benefit those who have to decide whether people are telling the truth or lying, because it both reviews contemporary research and provides practical guidelines." Frans Willem Winkel, Free University of Amsterdam President EAPL (European Association of Psychology and Law) This book is aimed at students, academics and professionals in psychology, criminology, policing and law.
