To him and his brother Epimetheus was committed the office of making man, and providing him and all other animals with the Faculties necessary for their preservation. Epimetheus undertook to do this, and Prometheus was to overlook his work, when it was done. Epimetheus accordingly proceeded to bestow upon the different animals the various gifts of courage, strength, swiitness, sagacity; wings to one, claws to another, a Shelly covering to a third, etc. But when man came to be provided for, who was to be superior to all other animals, Epimetheus had been so prodigal of his resources that he had nothing left to bestow upon him. In his perplexity he resorted to his brother Prometheus, who, with the aid of Minerva, went up to heaven, and lighted his torch at the chariot of the sun, and brought down tire to man. With this gift man was more than. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Famous Stories If there was one fault with this wonderful land it was that there was no work for the children to do. If there had been, perhaps what happened never would have happened. Then again, who can tell? Perhaps it was bound to happen. There was a wonderful box in the cottage where Epimetheus and Pandora lived. From that first day Pandora came, she had been extremely curious as to what was inside it. With the days her curiosity grew until finally not able to contain herself longer, she asked her play mate about it. Oh, that, replied Epimetheus. It was left here by a jolly fellow who asked me to keep it for him. Come on, Pandora, let us get out for some figs and dates. I know a new game. So off they went. But it was but a little while before the thought of the box came back to the girl. What could be in it? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A highly readable and beautifully illustrated re-telling of the most famous stories from Greek mythology. The Greek Myths contains some of the most thrilling, romantic, and unforgettable stories in all human history. From Achilles rampant on the fields of Troy, to the gods at sport on Mount Olympus; from Icarus flying too close to the sun, to the superhuman feats of Heracles, Theseus, and the wily Odysseus, these timeless tales exert an eternal fascination and inspiration that have endured for millennia and influenced cultures from ancient to modern. Beginning at the dawn of human civilization, when the Titan Prometheus stole fire from Zeus and offered mankind hope, the reader is immediately immersed in the majestic, magical, and mythical world of the Greek gods and heroes. As the tales unfold, renowned classicist Robin Waterfield, joined by his wife, writer Kathryn Waterfield, creates a sweeping panorama of the romance, intrigues, heroism, humour, sensuality, and brutality of the Greek myths and legends. The terrible curse that plagued the royal houses of Mycenae and Thebes, Jason and the golden fleece, Perseus and the dread Gorgon, the wooden horse and the sack of Troy--these amazing stories have influenced art and literature from the Iron Age to the present day. And far from being just a treasure trove of amazing tales, The Greek Myths is a catalogue of Greek myth in art through the ages, and a notable work of literature in its own right.

It was in troduced by the poem Prometheus and closed by Epimetheus. The title, Which had been used be fore for a single poem, was conveniently compre hensive and appropriate, and when making the first collective edition of his works after this, Mr. Longfellow employed it to stand above his various shorter pieces after this date, arranging them ac cording to their successive issues in book form, as Flight the First, which included the poems pub lished in The Courtship Olfiles Standish vol ume, and thus through Flight the Fifth. This arrangement is here followed with a slight change. The poem Birds of Passage, originally published in The Seaside and The Fireside, is made to lead the first Flight. Prometheus and Epimetheus, instead of heading and closing one section, are placed together, Since in their original composition and in the author's intention they were comple mentary poems.
