  • Pages : 739 pages

Download or read book Plant Anatomy written by Richard Crang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended as a text for upper-division undergraduates, graduate students and as a potential reference, this broad-scoped resource is extensive in its educational appeal by providing a new concept-based organization with end-of-chapter literature references, self-quizzes, and illustration interpretation. The concept-based, pedagogical approach, in contrast to the classic discipline-based approach, was specifically chosen to make the teaching and learning of plant anatomy more accessible for students. In addition, for instructors whose backgrounds may not primarily be plant anatomy, the features noted above are designed to provide sufficient reference material for organization and class presentation. This text is unique in the extensive use of over 1150 high-resolution color micrographs, color diagrams and scanning electron micrographs. Another feature is frequent side-boxes that highlight the relationship of plant anatomy to specialized investigations in plant molecular biology, classical investigations, functional activities, and research in forestry, environmental studies and genetics, as well as other fields. Each of the 19 richly-illustrated chapters has an abstract, a list of keywords, an introduction, a text body consisting of 10 to 20 concept-based sections, and a list of references and additional readings. At the end of each chapter, the instructor and student will find a section-by-section concept review, concept connections, concept assessment (10 multiple-choice questions), and concept applications. Answers to the assessment material are found in an appendix. An index and a glossary with over 700 defined terms complete the volume.

Book excerpt: The Epidermis documents the proceedings of a symposium that explored in detail the fundamental aspects of the epidermis and the still poorly understood process of keratinization. The Division of Dermatology, University Extension and the School of Medicine of the University of California at Los Angeles agreed to sponsor the conference and offered the University's Residential Conference Center at Lake Arrowhead for the meeting place. This volume is a source book of basic dermatologic thought and information. More than a book of dermatology, this volume makes a singular contribution to our knowledge of keratinization. The volume contains 37 papers and opens with an introductory chapter on keratinization, focusing on the history of the keratohyalin granules, the role of lipids in the orderly keratinization of the epidermis, and the desquamation process. Subsequent chapters present studies on topics such as the behavior of the skin; the effects of various experimental conditions on keratinization in organ culture; and the localization and the regional variability in the concentration epidermal enzymes.

Book Vitamin C in Human Health and Disease

Download or read book Vitamin C in Human Health and Disease written by Wang Jae Lee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the scientific evidence for the role of vitamin C in health and disease and offers new guidance on vitamin C intake in humans. The importance of vitamin C in preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease, its relevance to aging and stress, and its impacts on each of the human body systems are thoroughly assessed on the basis of the author’s extensive research and his deep understanding, as an anatomy professor, of the body as a whole. Findings published in the international scientific literature are fully taken into account, and due consideration is also given to empirical evidence, bearing in mind that mechanisms of action cannot always be precisely defined in the absence of human experiments. Beyond providing an up-to-date scientific perspective on the effects of vitamin C, the author hopes to promote human health worldwide by encouraging proper use of the vitamin. To this end, recommendations are made on the amount of vitamin C that should be taken daily and on the best way to take it. The book will be of interest to researchers, clinicians, and all others who wish to learn more about this vitamin and its significance.

Book Skin Barrier Function

    Book Details:
  • Author : T. Agner
  • Publisher : Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
  • Release : 2016-02-04
  • ISBN : 3318055867

Download or read book Skin Barrier Function written by T. Agner and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a very fragile structure, the skin barrier is probably one of the most important organs of the body. Inward/out it is responsible for body integrity and outward/in for keeping microbes, chemicals, and allergens from penetrating the skin. Since the role of barrier integrity in atopic dermatitis and the relationship to filaggrin mutations was discovered a decade ago, research focus has been on the skin barrier, and numerous new publications have become available. This book is an interdisciplinary update offering a wide range of information on the subject. It covers new basic research on skin markers, including results on filaggrin and on methods for the assessment of the barrier function. Biological variation and aspects of skin barrier function restoration are discussed as well. Further sections are dedicated to clinical implications of skin barrier integrity, factors influencing the penetration of the skin, influence of wet work, and guidance for prevention and saving the barrier. Distinguished researchers have contributed to this book, providing a comprehensive and thorough overview of the skin barrier function. Researchers in the field, dermatologists, occupational physicians, and related industry will find this publication an essential source of information.

Book The Biology of the Epidermis

Download or read book The Biology of the Epidermis written by Akira Ōkawara and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The above mentioned congress, the fifth in a series of seminars held since 1976, was held under the sponsorship of The Japan Society for Promotion of Science and The National Science Foundation of the United States. The goal of these seminars has been to exchange the newest information and to discuss current topics in the field of epidermal proliferation and differentiation. The symposia have been published as four independent monographs which have drawn the interest of many biologists toward epidermal differentiation. The basic framework behind these seminars was established by the late Professor Makoto Seiji and by Professor Isadore A. Bernstein in 1976. They felt that a small group would be able to evaluate existing information, resolve differences of opinion and chart a direction which could result in more rapid progress toward the common goals sought by the participating laboratories in Japan and in the United States. The editors of this book hope that publication of these papers will be beneficial to investigators world-wide and will foster interaction among scientists in The Biology of the Epidermis.
