Book Showman of the Screen

Download or read book Showman of the Screen written by A. T. McKenna and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short, immaculately dressed, and shockingly foul-mouthed, Joseph E. Levine (1905--1987) was larger than life. He rose from poverty in Boston's West End to become one of postwar Hollywood's most prolific independent promoters, distributors, and producers. Alternately respected and reviled, this master of movie promotion was responsible for bringing films as varied as Godzilla: King of the Monsters! (1956), Hercules (1958), The Graduate (1967), The Lion in Winter (1968), and A Bridge Too Far (1977) to American audiences . In the first biography of this controversial pioneer, A. T. McKenna traces Levine's rise as an influential packager of popular culture. He explores the mogul's pivotal role in many significant industry innovations from the 1950s to the 1970s, examining his use of saturation release tactics and bombastic advertising campaigns. Levine was also a trailblazer in promoting European art house cinema in the 1960s. He made Federico Fellini's 81⁄2 (1963) a hit in America, feuded with Jean-Luc Godard over their production of Contempt (1963), and campaigned aggressively for Sophia Loren to become the first actress to win an Oscar for a foreign language performance for her role in Two Women (1960). Despite his significant accomplishments and prominent role in shaping film distribution and promotion in the post-studio era, Levine is largely overlooked today. McKenna's in-depth biography corrects misunderstandings and misinformation about this colorful figure, and offers a sober assessment of his contributions to world cinema. It also illuminates Levine's peculiar talent for movie- and self-promotion, as well as his extraordinary career in the motion picture business.

Book Civil War Writing

  • Author : Stephen Cushman
  • Publisher : LSU Press

  • ISBN : 0807171018
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Civil War Writing written by Stephen Cushman and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2019-03-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil War Writing is a collection of new essays that focus on the most significant writing about the American Civil War by participants who lived through it, whether as civilians or combatants, southerners or northerners, women or men, blacks or whites. Collectively, as contributors show, these writings have sustained their influence over generations and include histories, memoirs, journals, novels, and one literary falsehood posing as an autobiographical narrative. Several of the works, such as William Tecumseh Sherman’s memoirs or Mary Chesnut’s diary, are familiar to scholars, but other accounts, including Charlotte Forten’s diary and Loreta Velasquez’s memoir, offer new material to even the most omnivorous Civil War reader. In all cases, a deeper look at these writings reveals why they continue to resonate with audiences more than 150 years after the end of the conflict. As supporting evidence for historical and biographical narratives and as deliberately designed communications, the writings discussed in this collection demonstrate considerable value. Whether exploring the differences among drafts and editions, listening closely to fluctuations in tone or voice, or tracing responses in private correspondence or published reviews, the essayists examine how authors wrote to different audiences and out of different motives, creating a complex literary record that offers rich potential for continuing evaluation of the country’s greatest national trauma. Overall, the essays in Civil War Writing underscore how participants employed various literary forms to record, describe, and explain aspects and episodes of a conflict that assumed proportions none of them imagined possible at the outset.

Book Abandoning Dead Metaphors

Download or read book Abandoning Dead Metaphors written by Patricia Ismond and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, Derek Walcott is the most important West Indian poet writing in English today, and his success has inspired many aspiring Caribbean writers. He began his career divided between his driving commitment to the revolutionary cause of his native Caribbean and his strong ties to a Western literary tradition. In his works he has studied the conflict between the heritage of European and West Indian culture. Abandoning Dead Metaphors is a critical appreciation of the works produced in Walcott's Caribbean phase (1946-1981). The poetry of this phase contains most of the seminal ideas and values that underlie his total achievement. This study closely examines Walcott's definitive use of metaphor, through which he conducts a deeply philosophical discourse focusing on the juxtaposition of his concern with a regional history of negation and his immersion in the Western literary and cultural tradition of the colonizer. Studying the works of this period also allows for a full exposure of Walcott's engagement with the landscape, culture and society of the region. Ismond's work is essential reading for students of Caribbean literature and scholars of Ne

Book The Cult of Draupadi Volume 1

Download or read book The Cult of Draupadi Volume 1 written by Alf Hiltebeitel and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1988-03-21 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a projected three-volume work on the little-known South Indian folk cult of the goddess Draupadi and on the classical epic, the Mahabharata, that the cult brings to life in mythic, ritual, and dramatic forms. Draupadi, the chief heroine of the Sanskrit Mahabharata, takes on many unexpected guises in her Tamil cult, but her dimensions as a folk goddess remain rooted in a rich interpretive vision of the great epic. By examining the ways that the cult of Draupadi commingles traditions about the goddess and the epic, Alf Hiltebeitel shows the cult to be singularly representative of the inner tensions and working dynamics of popular devotional Hinduism.
