Book Environmental water needs and impacts of irrigated agriculture in river basins A framework for a new research program

Download or read book Environmental water needs and impacts of irrigated agriculture in river basins A framework for a new research program written by Smakhtin, V. and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2002 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of this paper is to develop a framework for a new IWMI research program on environmental water requirements of aquatic ecosystems and environmental aspects associated with irrigated agriculture in river basins and wetlands. The program will be implemented primarily in the context of developing countries, but the paper also examines research questions, which are of general importance for eco-hydrology and environmental water resources management. At the same time, it does not purport to be a comprehensive coverage of the environmental water research field but is designed primarily for attention of specialists dealing with wetlands, water resources management and sustainable agricultural development within sister CGIAR centers and other similar international agencies. It is envisaged that some ideas for future research presented in the paper will also be of interest to hydrologists and ecologists engaged in developing the concepts of environmental water requirements of aquatic ecosystems. The introduction of the paper sets up the purpose of the document. This is followed by a description of a framework, which links different levels of water resources use and conservation of natural aquatic systems with various management interventions. The main focus areas of the proposed research are then discussed. They include estimating water requirements of aquatic ecosystems, evaluating scenarios of development and impacts of irrigated agriculture on rivers and wetlands, allocating water with the consideration of environmental thresholds, etc. The paper also discusses possible research activities, which are associated with these focus areas and presents examples of specific research projects that could be pursued internally or in partnership with other national and international institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an analytical summary and a critical synthesis of research at the International Water Management Institute over the past decade under its evolving research paradigm known popularly as 'more crop per drop'. The research synthesized here covers the full range of issues falling in the larger canvas of water-food-health-environment interface. Besides its immediate role in sharing knowledge with the research, donor, and policy communities, this volume also has a larger purpose of promoting a new way of looking at the water issues within the broader development context of food, livelihood, health and environmental challenges. More crop per drop: Revisiting a research paradigm contrasts the acquired wisdom and fresh thinking on some of the most challenging water issues of our times. It describes new tools, approaches, and methodologies and also illustrates them with practical application both from a global perspective and within the local and regional contexts of Asia and Africa. Since this volume brings together all major research works of IWMI, including an almost exhaustive list of citations, in one single set of pages, it is very valuable not only as a reference material for researchers and students but also as a policy tool for decision-makers and development agencies.

Book A framework for efficient wastewater treatment and recycling systems

Download or read book A framework for efficient wastewater treatment and recycling systems written by Gayathri Devi Mekala and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2008-06-27 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of un-treated/partially treated wastewater for irrigation in the dry countries of Asia and Africa and recycling of treated wastewater in the water scarce developed countries has become a common practice due to various reasons. While the lack of wastewater treatment to appropriate levels before use is a major problem in developing countries, the high cost of wastewater recycling is the major problem in developed countries. The current paper is part of a doctoral research and presents the conceptual framework for the research and the methodology that can be used to tackle the problems associated with wastewater recycling.

Book Integrated Water Resources Management A Systems Perspective of Water Governance and Hydrological Conditions

Download or read book Integrated Water Resources Management A Systems Perspective of Water Governance and Hydrological Conditions written by Adey NIgatu Mersha and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents analysis of the status of IWRM implementation along with the challenges with regards to policy and institutional measures as well as the required basin information and management instruments. The research entailed a detailed analysis of water resources systems based on a case study from the Awash River Basin in Ethiopia, covering the historical and present state of the challenges and gaps in policies, institutional arrangements and management instruments. The status quo of practical water management, implications of plausible management alternatives in terms of their impact to future water availability, demand fulfilment, patterns of use, and sustainability of the environment were examined. Moreover, the interlinkages and dynamics between key water dependent resources sectors, broadly categorized into water, energy, food, and ecosystems (WEFE) was explored to identify key tradeoffs and synergies. This was deliberated as to improving the synchronization of sectoral plans and resources management programs, thereby fast-tracking the coordination process in IWRM. Overall, the research provides a clearer understanding of the system-wide problems, structural challenges and possible future consequences regarding the management and sustainability of the entire water resource system. Ultimately the purpose is to set in motion new strategies and mechanisms to improve the implementation of the currently applied IWRM framework in the context of the SDGs.

Book The Politics of Legality in a Neoliberal Age

Download or read book The Politics of Legality in a Neoliberal Age written by Ben Golder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the relationship between law and neoliberalism. Assembling work from established and emerging legal scholars, political theorists, philosophers, historians, and sociologists from around the world – including the Americas, Australia, Europe, and the United Kingdom – it addresses the conceptual, legal, and political relationships between liberal legality and neoliberal economics. More specifically, the book analyses the role that legality plays in the dominant economic force of our time, offering both a legal corrective to scholarship in economics and political economy that has paid insufficient attention to legal ideas, and, at the same time, a political economic corrective to legal scholarship that has only recently turned to theorizing neoliberalism. It will be of enormous interest to those working at the intersection of law and politics in our neoliberal age.

They are about ecosystems - how agriculture affects ecosystems, the goods and services ecosystems provide for food security and how water can be managed to meet both food and environmental security objectives. This is the eighth book in the series.
