Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an international panel of specialists on Thailand who share a common concern for the environment, this volume examines the causes and consequences of environment change both in the countryside and the urban areas of the Kingdom. The papers, however, in no sense reflect a common view; the authors embrace contrasting environmental ideologies in discussing a wide range of concerns. These include the role of Buddhism and tourism in promoting sustainable development, environmental systems of thought and action, the practicalities of water pollution control in Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand, and the changing bases of life and livelihood among the hill peoples of the North. The environment as an issue of concern is now important phase of assimilation, interpretation, prescription and action. The papers in this volume reflect this change.

Book Environmental Protection and Community Rights

Download or read book Environmental Protection and Community Rights written by Aschara Chinniyompanich and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1945 human rights have been included in state obligations and duties in the Charter of United Nations and other legal agreements. These instruments describe the need to respect, protect, and fulfill the rights of people of every nationality, place of residence, gender, ethnicity, colour, religion, language, or other status. Human rights have been further elaborated in the context of community or group rights as third generation rights. They are sometimes referred to as „solidarity rights‟ and mentioned in many international contexts such as in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Rio Declaration, the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Nagoya Protocol. This third generation of human rights includes rights to goods, such as development, peace, a healthy environment, communication, humanitarian assistance, and a share in the common heritage of mankind.Community rights, pertaining to environmental protection have been included in the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand since 1997. However, cases have been reported of violations of the written law and the enforcement of community rights. These cases provide the evidence of a gap between the law and its enforcement. This study investigates this gap, particularly in relation to community rights and the mining of natural resources in rural localities in Thailand. Australian laws and practices provide the comparative context for this investigation, including some case studies. This study proposes ways of closing the gap between the Constitution and its enforcement that will aide Thailand‟s future strengthening of community rights and environmental protection for rural people. These proposals include: a Community Rights Act, policies and additional inclusions in the current legislation.

Book Thailand

Download or read book Thailand written by Yongyut Traisurat and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand has been recognized as having rich natural resources, the natural capital to support the countrys economic development and the livelihood of Thai people. Tapping on its vast fertile area, the country has been one of the players in global food production for last four decades. However, these achievements have also had negative consequences on biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and human health both in rural and urban areas. Thailand: Environmental Resources and Related Policies and Social Issues reviews the pressures, impacts and status of selected natural resources and environmental concerns, e.g., forest resources, coastal and marine resources, protected areas and biodiversity, soil and land resources, water resources, energy and climate change, and economic instruments and modeling tools for enhancing management planning through various contributed chapters that are organised into five sections: Section One: Setting the Scene; Section Two: Physical Environment and Natural Resources; Section Three: Governance and Management; Section Four: Global Initiatives and Economic Tools; and Section Five: Conclusions and Recommendations. In addition, the concepts and lessons learned from case studies presented in this book do not only provide the analytical review status, but also identify key issues and management options for achieving the designated national goals and international commitments on biodiversity conservation and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. It is hoped that this book will be of value in terms of the necessary inputs to effectively support the implementation of the Thai governments initiatives on moving the country towards Thailand 4.0 or a value-based economy, as well as the recent 20-year National Strategic Plan (2017-2036). The contents and materials will also be of interest to individual scientists, stakeholders, practitioners and policy-makers working for the cause of natural resources and environmental, management and sustainable development in Thailand and beyond.
