Book Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001

Download or read book Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-04-05 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, the Federal Facilities Council (FFC), which operates under the aegis of the National Research Council, established a standing committee on Environmental Engineering with the express purpose of providing a forum where federal environmental engineers and program managers could meet on a regular basis to exchange information about facilities-related environmental programs, policies, and issues. The committee members, like environmental program managers in other types of organizations, are increasingly concerned about achieving and demonstrating sound environmental performance by meeting the requirements of environmental regulations and limiting the impacts of their products or services on the environment. To foster communication and address concerns about EMSs, the FFC Standing Committee on Environmental Engineering hosted a one-day workshop on Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001. The workshop was held April 9, 1998, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Book Environmental Management in Construction

Download or read book Environmental Management in Construction written by Heng Li and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demands on the construction industry are changing, and it is now virtually essential for environmental management to be considered at all stages of a project. Many construction managers are finding a quantitative approach useful, and this book outlines four quantitative methods which can be applied at different construction stages, and which fit within a comprehensive framework of dynamic Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). These include: a method to quantitatively evaluate and reduce pollution and hazards levels a method to evaluate the environmental-consciousness of proposed construction plans a method to reduce on-site construction wastes through an incentive reward programme a method to promote C and D waste exchange in the local construction industry. With an experimental case study of the application of these methods, this book delivers a comprehensive review of environmental management issues in construction. With regulatory requirements potentially favouring the quantitative approach, this timely guide ensures that contractors will be able to keep pace with environmental management standards.

Book Environmental Management Systems

Download or read book Environmental Management Systems written by Christopher Sheldon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition of Sheldon and Yoxon's authoritative Environmental Management Systems (previously entitled Installing Environmental Management Systems) has been extensively revised to cover changes in international standards and other related developments in the field such as British Standard BS 8555. Drawing on the authors' extensive hands-on experience in both implementing and training others, it describes how such systems can be used to prioritize actions and resources, increase efficiency, minimize costs and lead to better, more informed decision making. Set out in a straightforward series of steps, it cuts through the jargon and demolishes the myths that surround this important management tool. The authors explain the importance of carrying out an initial environmental review, identifying cause and effect, understanding legislative and regulatory issues, developing a policy and defining objectives and targets. They also describe how to design an effective environmental management programme and implement a successful audit and review. Clear and concise, and packed with helpful practical examples and insider tips, it has become the standard manual for managers and consultants at all levels.

Book Waste Management for the Food Industries

Download or read book Waste Management for the Food Industries written by Ioannis S. Arvanitoyannis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 1096 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuously increasing human population, has resulted in a huge demand for processed and packaged foods. As a result of this demand, large amounts of water, air, electricity and fuel are consumed on a daily basis for food processing, transportation and preservation purposes. Although not one of the most heavily polluting, the food industry does contribute to the increase in volume of waste produced as well as to the energy expended to do so. For the first time, nine separate food industry categories are thoroughly investigated in Waste Management for the Food Industries in an effort to help combat this already acute problem. The current state of environmental management systems is described, offering comparisons of global legislation rarely found in other resources. An extensive review of commercial equipment, including advantages and disadvantages per employed waste management technique, offers a unique perspective for any academic, student, professional, and/or consultant in the food, agriculture and environmental industries. Thoroughly examines the most prevalent and most polluting industries such as Meat, Fish, Dairy, Olive Oil, Juice and Wine industries Includes synoptical tables [methods employed, physicochemical or microbiological parameters altered after treatment etc] and comparative figures of the effectiveness of various waste management methods Contains nearly 2500 of the most up-to-date references available
