Book ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY IN SOUTH WESTERN PART OF VAIPPAR RIVER BASIN

Download or read book ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY IN SOUTH WESTERN PART OF VAIPPAR RIVER BASIN written by Jeyaseelan A. and published by Independent Author. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years at global level, much attention has been paid to the chemical composition of groundwater in rural areas because it revealed that there is a possibility of causal link between the geochemical environment and the groundwater quality. The rural areas may also pose major groundwater contamination problems by imigation and subsurface geological formations. The groundwater is used as direct use in rural water supply without proper treatment for drinking and agricultural practices. However, no detailed studies have been carried out in the rural area of Vaippar River Basin of Tamil Nadu, India with respect to drinking and irrigational purposes so far. The present study was carried out to assess groundwater quality of Nichabanadhi-Kalingalar sub-basin of Vaippar River Basin Agriculture is the main occupation of the people in the study area. Both irrigation and drinking water supplies in the study area rely, mostly on groundwater. The area is mostly covered with agricultural land and there may be a causal link between the groundwater contamination and imigational activities. This concern has also been considered for this study. Preliminary field investigation studies were carried out for capturing well inventory data and identifying topography of the study area. All the required thematic maps were prepared using ArcGIS software. The GIS and Remote Sensing techniques have been adopted for the identification of morphological features and analyzing other properties of the study area. The morphometric parameters such as linear, aerial and relief aspects of the sub-basin were determined and computed. The morphometric analysis reveals.

Book Impacts of Urbanization on Hydrological Systems in India

Download or read book Impacts of Urbanization on Hydrological Systems in India written by P. Thambidurai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-02 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the various impacts of urbanization on hydrological systems and water resources. The first half of the book is focused on urbanization and surface waters, starting with the status of hydrological systems in the urban areas, i.e. the catchment characteristics and changes in rainfall dynamics. The most pronounced hydrological problems in cities are changes in runoff due to precipitation. Recently, rain events have been less frequent but more intense, sometimes leading to flash floods. Though the substantial increase in runoff causes floods in the urbanized area, it may be attributed to the reduction of infiltration due to construction of roads. This, in turn, results in groundwater decline and depletion. The second half of the book covers the impact of urbanization on groundwater, which starts with hindered or significantly reduced recharge taking place due to altered urban surfaces. The limited groundwater resources are over-exploited by the urban population, leading to water scarcity and depletion. Groundwater gets polluted due to solid waste dumping sites or by wastewaters discharged by industries. The book will be useful for researchers, educators, municipal/city authorities, government officials, and NGOs.

Book An Integrated Approach towards Ground Water Sustainability and Management for a Hard Rock Terrain

Download or read book An Integrated Approach towards Ground Water Sustainability and Management for a Hard Rock Terrain written by Nanjundi Prabhu and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-07-13 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2020 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: First, Bangalore University / Central College , language: English, abstract: The thesis presents a two-dimensional Risk Assessment Method (RAM) where the assessment of risk to the groundwater resources incorporates both the quantification of the probability of the occurrence of contaminant source terms, as well as the assessment of the resultant impacts. The approach emphasizes the need for a greater dependency on the potential pollution sources, rather than the traditional approach where assessment is based mainly on the intrinsic geo-hydrologic parameters. The risk is calculated using Monte Carlo simulation methods whereby random pollution events were generated to the same distribution as historically occurring events or a priori potential probability distribution. Integrated mathematical models then simulate contaminant concentrations at the predefined monitoring points within the aquifer. The spatial and temporal distributions of the concentrations were calculated from repeated realisations, and the number of times when a user defined concentration magnitude was exceeded is quantified as a risk. The results of the applications of the method are presented in the form of tables, graphs and spatial maps. Varying the model grid sizes indicates no significant effects on the simulated groundwater head. The simulated frequency of daily occurrence of pollution incidents is also independent of the model dimensions. However, the simulated total contaminant mass generated within the aquifer, and the associated volumetric numerical error appear to increase with the increasing grid sizes.

Book Groundwater Governance

Download or read book Groundwater Governance written by M. Srinivasa Reddy and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to understand and identify the gaps in groundwater development, as well as management in terms of technical knowledge, scale, and participatory approaches. It also explores the possible options for community-based groundwater management in the Indian context. Using spatio-temporal analysis, this book has assessed groundwater situation in undivided Andhra Pradesh, and it highlights the importance of hydrological information at an appropriate scale. By reviewing the existing groundwater management practices at the policy level across countries, it discusses the different basic management principles (viz. regulatory, economic, and community-based) that are adopted for groundwater management. A comparative assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of three different institutional models that are addressing groundwater management in Andhra Pradesh are taken up in order to arrive at a feasible or acceptable institutional model for scaling up. These institutions are assessed in terms of their structure, operational principles, functioning, and effectiveness in managing groundwater at the community level. Experience of these models reveals that though communities are capable of managing groundwater in a sustainable manner, sustainability of these initiatives remains uncertain in the present policy environment. Demand management models cannot be effective as long as policy environment is supply-sided. Hence, unless wide-ranging policy changes are brought in, these initiatives remain as models rather than being adapted at a wider scale. This book will be of interest to scholars, researchers, policy makers, development practitioners and all those interested in the sustainable management of groundwater.
