Book Protecting Children s Health in a Changing Environment

Download or read book Protecting Children s Health in a Changing Environment written by and published by WHO Regional Office Europe. This book was released on 2010 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health, organized by WHO/Europe and hosted by Italy, is the latest milestone in the European environment and health process, now in its twentieth year. Focused on protecting children's health in a changing environment, the Conference set Europe's agenda on emerging environmental health challenges for the years to come. The Parma Declaration is the first time-bound outcome of the environment and health process. The 53 Member States in the WHO European Region set clear targets to reduce the harm to health from environmental threats in the next decade. Safe urban settings, locally sourced food and use of ecomaterials contributed to the first ever low-carbon-footprint conference on environment and health organized by WHO/Europe. More than ever, children's health is at risk from a changing environment. The health effects of environmental risk factors - inadequate water and sanitation, unsafe home and recreational environments, lack of spatial planning for physical activity, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and hazardous chemicals - are amplified by recent developments such as financial constraints, broader socioeconomic and gender inequalities and more frequent extreme climate events. They pose new challenges for health systems to reduce deaths and diseases through effective environmental health interventions.

Book Guidelines for Evaluation of Environmental Health Services

Download or read book Guidelines for Evaluation of Environmental Health Services written by Christina H. Drew and published by WHO Regional Office Europe. This book was released on 2000 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical guide to concepts, methods, and instruments for conducting an evaluation of environmental health services. Noting that managers frequently overlook the importance of evaluation, the book also performs a persuasive function, serving to illustrate the advantages of evaluation for purposes ranging from the justification of continuing expenditure to assurance that public health is being adequately protected from hazards in food, air or water. Throughout the book, examples of evaluations conducted in European countries are used to show how different approaches work to resolve specific practical problems. The book has six chapters. The first provides a general introduction to the purpose, principles and components of evaluation, as well as procedures that are frequently used. Chapter two applies these general principles to the specific setting of environmental health services, where process, impact, relevance, and adequacy of services may need to be assessed. Factors that make such services difficult to evaluate through traditional mechanisms are also briefly discussed. Against this background, a chapter on data and indicators provides detailed advice on the choice of indicators, concentrating on the use of process, environmental health, and urban indicators. Chapter four, on instruments for evaluation, outlines the strengths and weaknesses of several methods of data collection, giving particular attention to tools for economic analysis and qualitative evaluation. The remaining chapters cover the use of results in management decisions and set out five case studies of evaluations recently conducted in Europe.

Book Environmental Health Services in Europe 1

Download or read book Environmental Health Services in Europe 1 written by Ian MacArthur and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 1997 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, apart from a brief comparison in the final chapter, is almost entirely descriptive. It therefore relies on examples from countries in the Region for the expansion and discussion of the various aspects of environmental health service delivery. It is clear that no two countries in the region have the same administrative structures or approach to environmental health services. Examples have been taken from all parts of the region where the surveys were carried out, and are used throughout in an ad hoc manner.
