Book Environmental Effects on Iron Aluminides

Download or read book Environmental Effects on Iron Aluminides written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion properties of reference Fe3Al (28 at. % Al)-based compositions containing 2 and 5 at. % Cr were compared in a mixed gas composed of H2S-H2-H2O-Ar and in dehumidified air. The parabolic rate constant at 800C was a factor of 200 higher for the 5% Cr composition. Similar exposure of an alloy containing 16% Al and 5% Cr resulted in significantly higher weight gains than the Fe3Al -- 5% Cr composition. However all the alloys were significantly more resistant to the mixed gas than iron-based alloys with higher chromium and lower aluminum contents. The oxidation rates of the 2 and 5% Cr alloys were comparable in dry air at 800C and were a factor of two lower than the rate of the 2% Cr alloy in the mixed gas. An alloy of Fe with 16% Al, 5% Cr, and 0.1% Zr showed improved cyclic oxidation resistance in air at 900 and 1000C relative to binary alloys of 16 and 20% Al. The extent of oxidation of these 16% Al alloys was comparable to Zr-containing Fe3Al aluminides (28% Al) that develop adherent scales.

Book excerpt: Alloys based on the Fe3Al system are under development at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in support of coal conversion and combustion materials requirements. Using H2S-H2-H2O gas mixtures, several experimental iron-aluminum alloys have been tested to assess the effects of aluminum concentration on corrosion behavior at 700 to 800°C in a simulated gasifier environment. Included in these studies are alloys that have been aluminized to convert the outer surfaces to FeAl (50 at. % Al). Thermogravimetric analyses, metallographic and chemical analyses of the corrosion product scales, are performed to determine the role of constituent metallic elements on oxidation and sulfidation processes. The corrosion resistance of Fe3Al alloys is being evaluated by exposures at 600 to 900°C in the gas-cooler section of an operating gasifier in the United Kingdom. The nature of protective scales formed on Fe3Al-based alloys in sulfur-containing atmospheres, as compared to air, is being evaluated using secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Marker experiments using 18O are conducted in conjunction with the SIMS studies to monitor oxide growth processes. 4 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Book Processing Properties and Applications of Iron Aluminides

Download or read book Processing Properties and Applications of Iron Aluminides written by Joachim H. Schneibel and published by Tms. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are many publications dealing with intermetallic materials, this book is unique in that it focuses on one specific type of intermetallic, iron aluminides. 28 reviewed papers present recent significant advances in the general areas of processing, microstructure and mechanical behaviour, dislocations and defects, and environmental effects. It should be of interest to anyone involved with iron aluminide intermetallics.

Book Oxidation of Intermetallics

Download or read book Oxidation of Intermetallics written by Hans Jürgen Grabke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last ten years vast efforts were made in the research and development of intermetallic compounds to attain improved high temperature strength and low temperature ductility. These new structural materials are used in several high-temperature applications like engines and turbines. Oxidation and corrosion resistance are as important for the current applications of these materials as mechanical properties. This book gives a sound review of the present knowledge of the oxidation kinetics and mechanisms of intermetallics. Especially Ti-, Ni- and Fe-aluminides are treated in detail by experts from Europe, USA and Japan. The information provided will be of wealth for any engineer and scientist- materials scientist, physicist or chemist - involved in the development of new intermetallic materials and their applications.

Book Physical Metallurgy and processing of Intermetallic Compounds

Download or read book Physical Metallurgy and processing of Intermetallic Compounds written by N.S. Stoloff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attractive physical and mechanical properties of ordered intermetallic alloys have been recognized since early in this century. However, periodic attempts to develop intermetallics for structural applications were unsuc cessful, due in major part to the twin handicaps of inadequate low-temper ature ductility or toughness, together with poor elevated-temperature creep strength. The discovery, in 1979, by Aoki and Izumi in Japan that small additions of boron caused a dramatic improvement in the ductility of Ni3Al was a major factor in launching a new wave of fundamental and applied research on intermetallics. Another important factor was the issuance in 1984 of a National Materials Advisory Board reported entitled "Structural Uses for Ductile Ordered Alloys," which identified numerous potential defense-related applications and proposed the launching of a coordinated development program to gather engineering property and processing data. A substantial research effort on titanium aluminides was already underway at the Air Force Materials Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and, with Air Force support, at several industrial and university laboratories. Smaller programs also were under way at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, under Department of Energy sponsorship. These research efforts were soon augmented in the United States by funding from Department of Defense agencies such as Office of Naval Research and Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and by the National Science Foundation.

Book Effects of High Temperature Surface Oxides on Room Temperature Aqueous Corrosion and Environmental Embrittlement of Iron Aluminides

Download or read book Effects of High Temperature Surface Oxides on Room Temperature Aqueous Corrosion and Environmental Embrittlement of Iron Aluminides written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies were conducted to determine the effects of high-temperature surface oxides, produced during thermomechanical processing, heat treatment (750 °C in air, one hour) or simulated in-service-type oxidation (1000°C in air, 24 hours) on the room-temperature aqueous-corrosion and environmental-embrittlement characteristics of iron aluminides. Materials evaluated included the Fe3Al-based iron aluminides, FA-84, FA-129, FAL and FAL-Mo, a FeAl-based iron aluminide, FA-385, and a disordered low-aluminum Fe-Al alloy, FAPY. Tests were performed in a mild acid-chloride solution to simulate aggressive atmospheric corrosion. Cyclic-anodic-polarization tests were employed to evaluate resistances to localized aqueous corrosion. The high-temperature oxide surfaces consistently produced detrimental results relative to mechanically or chemically cleaned surfaces. Specifically, the pitting corrosion resistances were much lower for the as-processed and 750° C surfaces, relative to the cleaned surfaces, for FA-84, FA-129, FAL-Mo, FA-385 and FAPY. Furthermore, the pitting corrosion resistances were much lower for the 1000°C surfaces, relative to cleaned surfaces, for FA-129, FAL and FAL-Mo.
