Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey of the environmental consequences of dam construction and water impoundment in Canada in the past to alert environmentalists and engineers to the problems that may be associated with such activities in the future. Immediate, direct and obvious effects and long term effects are identified, and biological consequences of dams and reservoirs are noted. The impact of these activities on native communities is discussed.

Book The Ecology of River Systems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bryan R. Davies
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 9401732906

Download or read book The Ecology of River Systems written by Bryan R. Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the ecology of running waters has come a long way during the past few years. From being a largely descriptive subject, with a few under tones concerned with such things as fisheries, pollution or control of blackflies, it has evolved into a discipline with hypotheses, such as the River Continuum Concept (Vannote et a/. 1980), and even a book suggesting that it offers opportunity for the testing of ecological theory (Barnes & Minshall 1983). However, perusal of the literature reveals that, although some of the very early studies were concerned with large rivers (references in Hynes 1970), the great mass of the work that has been done on running water has been on streams and small rivers, and information on larger rivers is either on such limited topics as fisheries or plankton, scattered among the journals, or not available to the general limnologist. The only exceptions are a few books in this series of publications, such as those on the Nile (Rz6ska 1976), the Volga (Morduckai Boltovskoi 1979) and the Amazon {Sioli 1984), and the recent compendium by Whitton (1984) on European rivers, among which there are a few that rate as large.

Book Inland Flood Hazards

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ellen E. Wohl
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2000-07-03
  • ISBN : 9780521624190
  • Pages : 520 pages

Download or read book Inland Flood Hazards written by Ellen E. Wohl and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-07-03 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume was originally published in 2000 and presents a comprehensive, interdisciplinary review of issues related to inland flood hazards. It addresses physical controls on flooding, flood processes and effects, and responses to flooding, from the perspective of human, aquatic, and riparian communities. Individual chapter authors are recognized experts in their fields who draw on examples and case studies of inland flood hazards from around the world. This volume is unusual among treatments of flood hazards in that it addresses how the non-occurrence of floods, in association with flow regulation and other human manipulation of river systems, may create hazards for aquatic and riparian communities. This book will be a valuable resource for everyone associated with inland flood hazards: professionals in government and industry, and researchers and graduate students in civil engineering, geography, geology, hydrology, hydraulics, and ecology.

Book Alternatives in Regulated River Management

Download or read book Alternatives in Regulated River Management written by James A. Gore and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers and managers of regulated river systems will find this volume useful in acquiring information for deciding an integrated management plan for regulated river operations. Rather than the ecological theory of impacts of flow regulation, emphasis has been placed on methods to predict water quality and habitat alterations, as well as techniques to mitigate impacts from various operational scenarios. Although most chapters refer to impacts of riverine impoundments, these alternatives apply to any regulated situation in which changes in water quality or flow pattern occur. The predictive modeling techniques are explained primarily from a theoretical background. However, extensive bibliographies can guide the uninitiated to specific texts and software. Where controversial techniques have been presented, alternate methods are also described. Major topic areas include water quality problems, channel modification and management, ecological modeling and management, as well as a section on perspectives for ecological management and special problems in developing nations.
