Download or read book Environmental assessment of soil for monitoring 1 Indicators criteria written by Sigbert Huber and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ENVASSO Project (Contract 022713) was funded 2006-8, under the European Commission 6th Framework Programme of Research, with the objective of defining and documenting a soil monitoring system appropriate for soil protection at continental level. The ENVASSO Consortium, comprising 37 partners drawn from 25 EU Member States, reviewed soil indicators, identified existing soil inventories and monitoring programmes in the Member States, designed and programmed a database management system to capture, store and supply soil profile data, and drafted procedures and protocols appropriate for inclusion in a European soil monitoring network of sites that are geo-referenced and at which a qualified sampling process is or could be conducted. This volume (I) identifies 290 potential indicators relating to 188 key issues for the following nine threats to soil: erosion, organic matter decline, contamination, sealing, compaction, loss of biodiversity, salinisation, landslides and desertification. Sixty candidate indicators that address 27 key issues, covering all these threats, were selected on the basis of their thematic relevance, policy relevance and data availability. Baseline and threshold values are presented and detailed Fact Sheets describe three priority indicators for each soil threat.

Book excerpt: The ENVASSO Project (Contract 022713) was funded under the European Commission 6th Framework Programme of Research, 2006-8, with the objective of defining and documenting a soil monitoring system appropriate for soil protection at continental level. The ENVASSO Consortium, comprising 37 partners drawn from 25 EU Member States, reviewed almost 300 soil indicators, identified existing soil inventories and monitoring programmes in the Member States, and drafted procedures and protocols appropriate for inclusion in a European soil monitoring network of sites that are geo-referenced and at which a qualified sampling process is or could be conducted. Volume V (this volume is one of 6) describes the procedures and protocols, needed for harmonised soil monitoring in Europe, which have been modified following the extensive testing of 22 indicators in 28 Pilot Areas of EU Member States reported in Volume IV. The results provide a foundation for implementing a soil monitoring programme in the near future but they are the scientific opinions of the ENVASSO Consortium, presented here without prejudice and in no way represent the official position of the European Commission on soil monitoring in Europe.

This Volume (III) reviews user-needs for soil information in this context and briefly describes existing soil information systems in a selection of Member States. Data models and database designs are also examined and requirements for future processing of soil data are reviewed in the context of developing a Web Soil Service. A data model is proposed and the SoDa database programmed to provide a harmonised basis for capturing soil data that would fill gaps in the existing knowledge base. SoDa has been tested in a number of ENVASSO Pilot Areas and modified in the light of the feedback received. A SoDa user manual is included as an Appendix.

Download or read book Soil Monitoring written by Schulin and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop on "Soil Monitoring: Methods for Early Detection and Surveying of Soil Contamination and Degradation", held at the ETH seminar centre "Stefano Franscini" of Monte Verita, Ascona (Switzerland) from October 18 - 23, 1992. Seventy participants, representing a variety of institutions, nations, and disciplines, discussed the concepts, approaches, status, gaps, problems, and perspectives of soil pollution monitoring. The idea for this workshop came from A. Desaules when he was installing the Swiss National Soil Monitoring Network (NABO) as his doubts about the philosophy of soil monitoring prevailing at that time increased. This philosophy essentially equated soil mo nitoring with repetitive surveys of soil pollutant concentrations at pennanent observation sites. He sought others interested in discussing alternatives, and he found a ready partner in the ETH-Institute for Terrestrial Ecology. Soon it was realized that a discussion of the NABO would immediately raise general questions with respect to the conceptual basis of soil monitoring and that a minimum agreement on this basis was indispensable to discuss more specific problems related to the realization of the NABO. As a result, a workshop was organized whose objectives were in particular (i) an assessment of current knowledge on soil monitoring by pennanent networks, (ii) a syn thesis of the experience from different disciplines related to soil monitoring, (iii) the identification ofresearch gaps with respect to long-tenn and large-scale soil monitoring, and (iv) the design of a platfonn for the development of soil monitoring strategies and methodology.
