Book Synthetic Solutions and Environment Sensitive Fracture

Download or read book Synthetic Solutions and Environment Sensitive Fracture written by RN. Parkins and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stress corrosion cracking of alloys is markedly sensitive to the environment to which they are exposed, so that an alloy developed to have low susceptibility to such failure in a particular environment will not necessarily show such behavior in a different environment, as illustrated by a number of examples. It is also possible for results from tests using standard environments to lead to the exclusion of the use of materials that may behave satisfactorily in service. While it is obvious that tests should be conducted, whenever possible, in environments relevant to particular service conditions, these are not necessarily known when alloy development programs are being undertaken in the laboratory, hence the need for standardized or synthetic solutions. Evidence for the cracking domains for ferritic steels and ?-brasses suggests that stress corrosion cracking in a range of environments occurs at potentials and pH's where the lower oxide of the relevant metal can form. This suggests that laboratory tests should involve more than a single standardized environment, and that variation from test to test of potential and pH, guided by the potential pH diagram, may provide a more reliable guide to stress corrosion cracking propensities than that obtained from tests in a single solution.

Book Fractography and Failure Analysis

Download or read book Fractography and Failure Analysis written by Jorge Luis González-Velázquez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents fractography and failure analysis at a level that is accessible for non-expert readers, without losing scientific rigor. It offers a comprehensive description of fracture surfaces in engineering materials, with an emphasis on metals, and of the methodology for the observation of fracture surfaces. It also discusses in detail the main fracture mechanisms and their corresponding fracture surfaces, including brittle, ductile, fatigue, and environmental fractures. The last chapter is dedicated to the use of fractography in determining of the causes component failure. In modern engineering, the analysis of fractured components is a common practice in many fields, such as integrity management systems, materials science research, and failure investigations. As such this book is useful for engineers, scientists, engineering students, loss adjuster surveyors and any professional dealing with fractured components.

Book A Critical Evaluation of Current Environment Sensitive Fracture Test Methods

Download or read book A Critical Evaluation of Current Environment Sensitive Fracture Test Methods written by RN. Parkins and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper does not attempt to review all aspects of environment-sensitive fracture testing, but rather is concerned specifically with continuing problems in relation to such tests and with relatively recent developments. The importance of conducting tests in environments related to possible service situations cannot be overemphasized, especially since, in relation to alloy selection, it is well established that alloy additions that provide good resistance in one environment may not do so in another. Similarly, in view of the importance of surface state in corrosion reactions, it is surprising how often laboratory tests involve surfaces that are not representative of those that may obtain in service, with the result that the free corrosion potentials in laboratory tests may differ markedly from those in service, with possibly serious consequences for cracking susceptibility. The problem is partially overcome by the use of potentiostatic control in laboratory tests, but in some, although not all, conditions of exposure composition and potential changes within precracks, crevices, or pits can influence results, and the crack tip potential may not equate to that which is measured at the surface where the crack emerges.
