Book excerpt: This research program has included two thrusts. The first addressed environment-induced embrittlement in a parallel study of stress corrosion cracking and metal-induced embrittlement. This work has examined (1) mechanical properties as influenced by embrittling environments, (2) fractography and crystallography or transgranular cracking, (3) the mechanics of cracking, (4) the extent and role of local plastic flow, and (5) local chemistry within stress corrosion and metal-induced cracks. The embrittlement of iron aluminide alloys by air was addressed by determining the effect of water and hydrogen upon the mechanical properties. Slow strain rate testing in aqueous environments was carried out at controlled anodic and cathodic potentials. The effect of cathodically charged hydrogen and the effect of subsequent baking were measured. Environmental susceptibility was measured as affected by alloy composition, microstructure and degree of ordering.

Benefiting from their unique microstructural features and outstanding mechanical performance, HEAs have shown significant potential for applications in many engineering fields, even under extreme conditions. In particular, when exposed to hydrogen and/or intermediate-temperature environments, these HEAs inevitably suffer from severe environmental embrittlement (EE) issues, e.g., hydrogen embrittlement (HE) and intermediate-temperature embrittlement (ITE), resulting in serious premature intergranular failure. In this work, we critically review the state-of-the-art advances of EE in previously reported HEA systems. Particular focus is given to novel strategies to enhance the resistance to EE in different HEAs. Two critical embrittlement phenomena, namely, HE and ITE, are highlighted separately. Finally, we provide perspectives on future research directions and opportunities for EE-resistant HEAs.

Book excerpt: Ordered intermetallics based on aluminides and silicides possess many promising properties for elevated-temperature applications; however, poor fracture resistance and limited fabricability restrict their use as engineering material. Recent studies have shown that environmental embrittlement is a major cause of low ductility and brittle fracture in many ordered intermetallic alloys. There are two types of environmental embrittlement observed in intermetallic alloys. One is hydrogen-induced embrittlement occurring at ambient temperatures in air. The other is oxygen-induced embrittlement in oxidizing atmospheres at elevated temperatures. In most cases, the embrittlements are due to a dynamic effect involving generation and penetration of embrittling agents (i.e., hydrogen or oxygen) during testing. Diffusion of embrittling agents plays a dominant role in fracture of these intermetallic alloys. This chapter summarizes recent progress in understanding and reducing environmental embrittlement in these alloys.

Book excerpt: Many ductile metals in intimate contact with thin coatings of low melting solid metal which exhibit liquid metal embrittlement, also manifest severe embrittlement when tested at temperatures below the melting point of the coating. A significant decrease in stress, strain, and reduction-in-area occurs at fracture. Fracture propagates fast, but at a rate which is one or two orders of magnitude slower than that in liquid metal environments. Fracture occurs by brittle intergranular or transcrystalline mode with multiple cracks and branching. This new phenomena is known as solid metal induced embrittlement of metals (SMIE). SMIE also occurs when the embrittling metal is present as an internal environment in the base metal such as inclusions. This report describes the occurrence of SMIE in metals and alloys used in industry and presents results of recent investigations. It describes the effects of time, temperature, and stress on SMIE. It discusses the occurrence, the mechanisms of SMIE, and its similarity to LME. This new phenomena must be considered while investigating environmentally induced failure of failure analysis of metals and alloys.

Book excerpt: The effects of water vapor in air and hydrogen gas on the tensile and fatigue crack growth behavior of Fe3Al alloys have been studied at room temperature. Fe-28a% Al-5a% Cr alloys to which either Zr alone or Zr and C have been added and tested in controlled humidity air environments as well as in 1.3 atm hydrogen or oxygen gas and in vacuum. As with other Fe3Al alloys, oxygen produces the lowest crack growth rates as well as the highest critical stress intensities and tensile ductility in each of the alloys tested. However, while Zr lowers crack growth rates in the Paris regime, there is no apparent beneficial effect on crack growth thresholds. Hydrogen gas also produces unusual results. While crack growth rates are very high in hydrogen in the Paris regime for all alloys, hydrogen only lowers the crack growth threshold relative to air in ternary Fe-28Al-5Cr; it does not lower the threshold in the Zr-containing alloys. It was found that decreased test frequency leads to increased crack growth rates in a Zr-containing alloy which points to a moisture-induced embrittlement mechanism responsible for the higher crack growth rates in air. Fracture path tends to be insensitive to environment for each alloy.

Not only is hydrogen embrittlement still a major industri al problem, but it is safe to say that in a mechanistic sense we still do not know what hydrogen (but not nitrogen or oxygen, for example) does on an atomic scale to induce this degradation. The same applies to other examples of environmentally-induced fracture: what is it about the ubiquitous chloride ion that induces premature catastrophic fracture (stress corrosion cracking) of ordinarily ductile austenitic stainless steels? Why, moreover, are halide ions troublesome but the nitrate or sulfate anions not deleterious to such stainless steels? Likewise, why are some solid metals embrit tled catastrophically by same liquid metals (liquid metal embrit tlement) - copper and aluminum, for example, are embrittled by liquid mercury. In short, despite all that we may know about the materials science and mechanics of fracture on a macroscopic scale, we know little about the atomistics of fracture in the absence of environmental interactions and even less when embrittlement phe nomena such as those described above are involved. On the other hand, it is interesting to note that physical chemists and surface chemists also have interests in the same kinds of interactions that occur on an atomic scale when metals such as nickel or platinum are used, for example, as catalysts for chemical reactions.
