Book Tourism and the Environment

Download or read book Tourism and the Environment written by Sanjay K. Nepal and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When concentrated in and around protected areas, tourism poses specific environmental challenges such as changes in land use, loss of vegetation cover, garbage accumulation and trail degradation. It is precisely because of such tourism-induced problems that more cautious tourism development policies are needed to ensure that they contribute positively to the sustainable development of mountain tourism destinations. Tourism in the Nepal Himalaya represents the dilemma of reconciling conservation with development, an issue that is still under debate in the context of sustainable development. This book is an attempt to highlight this dilemma for a developing country like Nepal. Set in the context of three popular mountain regions, the book examines the dynamics of tourism development and environmental change over the last three decades, and analyses the strategies that have been developed in response. l

Book Contemporary Environmental Problems in Nepal

Download or read book Contemporary Environmental Problems in Nepal written by Keshav Bhattarai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines contemporary environmental challenges facing Nepal, this landlocked country’s representativeness in the wider South Asian context is both distinct and generalizable. In large part, this is because of its extremes of physiographical structure- plains, hill ranges, mountainous massifs - and wide range of altitudinal terrains, which represent and replicate South Asian and East Asian continental conditions differing as markedly as humid tropical lowlands, sub-tropical hill ranges and temperate to sub-arctic mountainous environments. Associated forest regimes, in which deforestation and reforestation patterns have evolved in recent times, and differing densities of settlement and cleared agricultural landscapes in each of these altitudinal zones, add to the environmental diversity of Nepal. Associated fauna and exotic species are in various states of endangerment especially Bengal tigers, one horned rhinos, wild elephants, crocodile, musk deer, and peasants, to name a few- so that their forested and mountainous habitats as ‘Wild Life Reserves’ also deserve our attention, and are featured in this monograph’s remit.

By examining the recent trends of development and recording the dilemmas which are creating ecological imbalances, it explores some alternative ways of development to achieve sustainability. Divided into three parts, it has a broad canvass. The first section examines critically the ‘perspectives’ on ecology, practice and ethics, rural development and man–forest interaction in the metropolis. ‘Issues’ of dams, river, agricultural distress, environmental migration, eco-tourism, ecological conservation and land acquisition are assessed in part second. ‘Alternative’ means of development is explored in part third by incorporating chapters on the constructed wetland, biofuels, subsistence economy, water and traditional knowledge practice. This interdisciplinary book is of immense significance to academicians, researchers, postgraduate and graduate-level students of social sciences and environmental studies; policymakers, development practitioners and NGOs working in the area of environment and development.
