A resident of Salonika who survived the Holocaust as a partisan and later settled in Canada, Sarfatty preserved the traditions and memories of this diverse and thriving Sephardi community in some 500 Ladino poems known as coplas. The coplas also describe the traumas the community faced under German occupation before the Nazis deported its Jewish residents to Auschwitz. The coplas in Ladino and in Renée Levine Melammed's English translation are framed by chapters that trace the history of the Sephardi community in Salonika and provide context for the poems. This unique and moving source provides a rare entrée into a once vibrant world now lost.

It introduces three writers working in minor or threatened languages who challenge the usual consensus of Jewish literature: Algerian Sadia Lévy, Israeli Margalit Matitiahu, and Argentine Juan Gelman. Each of them—Lévy in French and Hebrew, Matitiahu in Hebrew and Ladino, and Gelman in Spanish and Ladino—expresses a hybrid or composite Sephardic identity through a strategic choice of competing languages and intertexts. Monique R. Balbuena's close literary readings of their works, which are mostly unknown in the United States, are strongly grounded in their social and historical context. Her focus on contemporary rather than classic Ladino poetry and her argument for the inclusion of Sephardic production in the canon of Jewish literature make Homeless Tongues a timely and unusual intervention.

The identifying sign of the Sephardim has been, until the middle of the twentieth century, the language known as Jewish-Spanish. The history, identity and memory of the Sephardim in their Mediterranean dispersal are analysed by the author with a special reference to the Sephardi community of Jerusalem and to the cultural and social changes that characterized the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. However, because of the crucial changes related to modernization and the political circumstances that came into being at the turn of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, the Sephardim lost their unique identity.

The phenomenon of hybridity has been pervasive throughout Spanish history. The hybrid literary and visual texts studied in this volume—ranging from aljamiado writings and the legacy from the convivencia to contemporary immigration narratives—blur or erase purportedly fixed boundaries: between history and fiction, story and History, nationality and transnationalism, subjectivity and objectivity, as well as between genres, cultures, languages and eras. Hybridity constitutes the state of simultaneously belonging to categories that had previously been considered exclusive. It renders the concept of pure as a construct, a chosen perception, a psychic imposition on experience. Implicit within hybridity is a fusion of two or more separate factors, entities or concepts, but the essential aspect of this fusion is that the hybrid text becomes an original. Hence, hybridity nods to the past, but points to the future. Hybridity in Spanish Culture, written both in Spanish and English, as a “metahybrid,” is a collection about hybridity that is a hybrid itself. In hopes of blurring borders, dissipating taxonomies, and dehierarchizing binary oppositions, the European and US authors and editors contribute to cultural studies scholarship and underscore the omnipresence and ubiquity of interstitial conditions as they relate to national or cultural identity, linguistic crossings, inter-genre blendings and the conception of home and belonging.

The perspectives, experiences, and theories presented in these examples offer a comprehensive framework for understanding wide-ranging manifestations of Orientalism in Latin America and elsewhere in the developing world. Orientalism and Identity in Latin America expands current theoretical frameworks, juxtaposing historical, biographical, and literary depictions of Middle Eastern and Asian migrations, both of people and cultural elements, as they have been received, perceived, refashioned, and integrated into Latin American discourses of identity and difference.
