Book excerpt: In recent years the field of entomology, due in part to the penetration of other disciplines, has made rapid progress. “Recent Advances in Entomological Research: From Molecular Biology to Pest Management” includes 25 chapters contributed by more than 40 distinguished entomologists and introduces the latest progress in entomology, from molecular biology, insect-plant interactions and insecticide toxicology, to emerging technologies in pest management. Not only is the book interesting and informative, but it provides useful, innovative research advances and will serve as a valuable resource for entomologists, zoologists, botanists and other researchers in the field of plant protection. Tong-Xian Liu is a professor of entomology at the College of Plant Protection, Northwest A&F University, China. Le Kang is a professor of entomology at the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China.

Book Transcriptomics in Entomological Research

Download or read book Transcriptomics in Entomological Research written by Matan Shelomi and published by CABI. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an account of the extraordinary diversity of ways transcriptomics has been and can be utilised in basic and applied entomological research. It encompasses a vast range of disciplines within entomology, applying transcriptomics to the study of over one million described species of insects. It covers a vast range of disciplines from phylogenomics to pest management, from ecology to physiology, and from behavior to evolutionary biology. The book covers the breadth and depth of transcriptomics use in research to showcase the utility of this technology in all disciplines. Research examples in the book are relevant to fish, birds, plants, and fungi, as well as insects and other arthropods, helping scientists in any field, using any system, to understand what transcriptomics can do for them. The book: Introduces transcriptomics theory and practice for researchers of all levels wishing to gain an insight into how to apply these techniques to their own fields. Showcases the myriad ways transcriptomics can be used to answer biological questions. Is written by a team of international experts describing their own experiences, giving guidance for applying it to the reader's own work. Reviews how transcriptomics research has helped entomologists push their fields further and make new discoveries.

Book Entomological Research in Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems

Download or read book Entomological Research in Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems written by François Lieutier and published by Editions Quae. This book was released on 2005-06-03 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the state of the art in entomological research in various Mediterranean forest ecosystems in the world. Unique in its field, it fills an important gap in forest and Mediterranean entomology. It is composed of 4 main parts: overviews on research works; entomological biodiversity; life cycles and relations with host trees; survey and control of insect populations. Researchers, teachers and students in universities as well as forest managers will find in it ground for thinking and much recent information.

Download or read book The Silken Thread written by Robert N. Wiedenmann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Insects are seldom mentioned in history texts, yet they significantly shaped human history. The Silken Thread: Five Insects and Their Impacts on History tells the stories of just five insects, tied together by a thread originating in the Silk Roads of Asia, and how they have impacted our world. Silkworms have been farmed to produce silk for millennia, creating a history of empires and cultural exchanges; Silk Roads connected East to West, generating trade centers and transferring ideas, philosophies, and religions. The western honey bee feeds countless people, and their crop pollination is worth billions of dollars. Fleas and lice carried bacteria that caused three major plague pandemics, moved along the Silk Roads from Central Asia. Bacteria carried by insects left their ancient clues as DNA embedded in victims' teeth. Lice caused outbreaks of typhus, especially in crowded conditions such as prisons and concentration camps. Typhus aggravated the effects of the Irish potato famine, and Irish refugees took typhus to North America. Yellow fever was transported to the Americas via the trans-Atlantic slave trade, taking and devaluing the lives of millions of Africans. Slaves were brought to the Americas to reduce labor costs in the cultivation of sugarcane, which was itself transported from south Asia along the Silk Roads. Yellow fever caused panic in the United States in the 1700s and 1800s as the virus and its mosquito vector migrated from the Caribbean. Constructing the Panama Canal required defeating mosquitoes that transmitted yellow fever. The silken thread runs through and ties together these five insects and their impacts on history"--

Book The British Foundation of Indian Entomology

Download or read book The British Foundation of Indian Entomology written by Michael Darby and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book devoted to the interest taken by amateur British collectors in Indian insects between 1750 and 1947, many employed as soldiers and medics by the East India Company. Initially confined to the building up of personal collections (many of which would later form the foundation of the London Natural History Museum’s collection), the early entomologists also donated specimens to the Asiatic Society of Bengal, the Bombay Natural History Society and local museums. Some published their findings in the journals of these institutions. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, interest in entomology shifted to focus on insect pests and their economic impact on forestry and horticulture. The result was the founding of the Institutes of Forestry and Horticulture at Dehra Dun and Pusa, where Indian scientists continue to conduct entomological research today. The present work elucidates this previously under-researched aspect of British insect history, documenting the people, places, publications and institutions associated with the exploration of the rich entomological fauna of the Indian subcontinent.
