Book Entanglement A True Story

Download or read book Entanglement A True Story written by Claire Thomas and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you think having the devil snapping at your heels is scary, it's nothing compared to finding God's calm presence at your back every time you stop to draw breath in your race to escape-particularly for a determined agnostic like Claire. Indeed, His presence is so unnerving and unwelcome that it's not until her world crumbles to ashes that she fi nds the courage to stop running and turn toward Him. Moderately psychic and a most earthbound mystic, Claire has heard the voice of Thomas from the days of earliest childhood, but has worked tirelessly for most of her adult life to shut it out or shout it down-until she made that fateful decision. Entanglement is the result of that choice. It describes the pain of surviving the traumatic deaths of four beloved people, fi nding the courage to walk away from abuse and oppression, and facing the fear of being utterly alone in the world. It also explains how confronting fear, accepting loss, and embracing the unknown and the mystical can create a life of enormous joy and enrichment. It focuses on how having the courage to stay in the "not-knowing" can be gloriously life-affirming and on how human life on earth is vastly more mysterious than most of us dare to imagine.

Book The Age of Entanglement

Download or read book The Age of Entanglement written by Louisa Gilder and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Age of Entanglement, Louisa Gilder brings to life one of the pivotal debates in twentieth century physics. In 1935, Albert Einstein famously showed that, according to the quantum theory, separated particles could act as if intimately connected–a phenomenon which he derisively described as “spooky action at a distance.” In that same year, Erwin Schrödinger christened this correlation “entanglement.” Yet its existence was mostly ignored until 1964, when the Irish physicist John Bell demonstrated just how strange this entanglement really was. Drawing on the papers, letters, and memoirs of the twentieth century’s greatest physicists, Gilder both humanizes and dramatizes the story by employing the scientists’ own words in imagined face-to-face dialogues. The result is a richly illuminating exploration of one of the most exciting concepts of quantum physics.

Book excerpt: Entanglement, the new novel based on the teachings of New York Times best-selling author Gregg Braden, explores the exciting world of quantum physics through the experiences of twin brothers. Charlie and Jack Franklin have always experienced life differently than your average brothers. As children, each was able to sense when the other was in danger, when the other was sad, or when the other was happy. However, as adults, these two brothers took different paths: Jack stayed in their hometown to practice his art and Charlie joined the army, only to be deployed to Afghanistan. After a frightening vision jolts Jack into consciousness, he begins his quest to get in touch with Charlie. Along the way, he encounters his high-school physics teacher, who helps him understand the connection the brothers have and the larger universal oneness of which we are all a part.

Download or read book Quantum Entanglement written by Jed Brody and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise, non-technical exploration of quantum entanglement—the enigma Albert Einstein called ‘spooky action at a distance’—and how it contradicts our assumptions about the ultimate nature of reality. Quantum physics is notable for its brazen defiance of common sense. (Think of Schrödinger's Cat, famously both dead and alive.) An especially rigorous form of quantum contradiction occurs in experiments with entangled particles. Our common assumption is that objects have properties whether or not anyone is observing them, and the measurement of one can’t affect the other. Quantum entanglement—called by Einstein “spooky action at a distance”—rejects this assumption, offering impeccable reasoning and irrefutable evidence of the opposite. Is quantum entanglement mystical, or just mystifying? In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Jed Brody equips readers to decide for themselves. He explains how our commonsense assumptions impose constraints—from which entangled particles break free. Brody explores such concepts as local realism, Bell’s inequality, polarization, time dilation, and special relativity. He introduces readers to imaginary physicists Alice and Bob and their photon analyses; points out that it's easier to reject falsehood than establish the truth; and reports that some physicists explain entanglement by arguing that we live in a cross-section of a higher-dimensional reality. He examines a variety of viewpoints held by physicists, including quantum decoherence, Niels Bohr's Copenhagen interpretation, genuine fortuitousness, and QBism. This relatively recent interpretation, an abbreviation of “quantum Bayesianism,” holds that there's no such thing as an absolutely accurate, objective probability “out there,” that quantum mechanical probabilities are subjective judgments, and there's no “action at a distance,” spooky or otherwise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivy K. Harlowe is a lot of things. She’s my best friend. She’s the center of attention. She is, without fail, the hottest girl in the room. Anytime. Anyplace. She has freckles and dimples and bright green eyes, and with someone else’s energy she’d be adorable. But there is nothing cute about Ivy. She is ice and hot metal and electricity. She is the girl who every lesbian wants, but she has never been with the same person twice. She’s one-of-a-kind but also predictable, so I will always be “best friend Andie,” never “girlfriend Andie.” Then she meets Dot, and Ivy does something even I would have never guessed—she sees Dot another day. And another. And another. Now my world is slowly going up in smoke, and no matter what I do, the flames grow higher. She lit that match without knowing who or what it would burn. Ivy K. Harlowe is a lot of things. But falling in love wasn’t supposed to be one of them...unless it was with me.

Book Musalaheen

Download or read book Musalaheen written by Jason Arment and published by . This book was released on 2018-10 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Musalaheen! Musalaheen!" The child cried twice before turning to run back inside. He peered at me from behind the doorjamb. I stood stunned for a moment, arm extended in front of me. I looked at the glove on my hand, blackened from sewage and dirt, torn apart by razor wire and rocks. I realized, if I were him, I wouldn't shake my hand either. Musalaheen is the Arabic word for gunslinger. Jason Arment, serving as a Machine Gunner in the United States Marine Corps during Operation Iraqi Freedom, is both gunman and witness in this memoir. Musalaheen is a chronicle of boots on the ground in an occupied land and Arment unflinchingly offers the reader a window into their own complicity in genocidal empire building.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A “brilliant [and] entrancing” (The Guardian) journey into the hidden lives of fungi—the great connectors of the living world—and their astonishing and intimate roles in human life, with the power to heal our bodies, expand our minds, and help us address our most urgent environmental problems. “Grand and dizzying in how thoroughly it recalibrates our understanding of the natural world.”—Ed Yong, author of An Immense World ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR—Time, BBC Science Focus, The Daily Mail, Geographical, The Times, The Telegraph, New Statesman, London Evening Standard, Science Friday When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave. In the first edition of this mind-bending book, Sheldrake introduced us to this mysterious but massively diverse kingdom of life. This exquisitely designed volume, abridged from the original, features more than one hundred full-color images that bring the spectacular variety, strangeness, and beauty of fungi to life as never before. Fungi throw our concepts of individuality and even intelligence into question. They are metabolic masters, earth makers, and key players in most of life’s processes. They can change our minds, heal our bodies, and even help us remediate environmental disaster. By examining fungi on their own terms, Sheldrake reveals how these extraordinary organisms—and our relationships with them—are changing our understanding of how life works. Winner of the Wainwright Prize, the Royal Society Science Book Prize, and the Guild of Food Writers Award • Shortlisted for the British Book Award • Longlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize

Download or read book The God Effect written by Brian Clegg and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2009-07-21 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A marvelously clear and engaging account of . . . the deepest mysteries of the quantum world and [converting] them into a useful technology.” —Gregory Chaitin, author of Meta Math! The Quest for Omega What is entanglement? It’s a connection between quantum particles, the building blocks of the universe. Once two particles are entangled, a change to one of them is reflected—instantly—in the other, be they in the same lab or light-years apart. So counterintuitive is this phenomenon and its implications that Einstein himself called it “spooky” and thought that it would lead to the downfall of quantum theory. Yet scientists have since discovered that quantum entanglement, the “God Effect,” was one of Einstein’s few mistakes. What does it mean? The possibilities offered by a fuller understanding of the nature of entanglement read like something out of science fiction: communications devices that could span the stars, codes that cannot be broken, computers that dwarf today’s machines in speed and power, teleportation, and more. In The God Effect, veteran science writer Brian Clegg has written an exceptionally readable (and equation-free) account of entanglement, its history, and its application. Those interested in the marvelous possibilities coming down the quantum road will find much to marvel, illuminate, and delight. “Clegg does an excellent job of explaining this complex situation in nontechnical terms . . . implications for future technological advances are huge, and Clegg is at his finest as he embeds potential advances in a broad historical context.” —Publishers Weekly “Well organized and succinct. . . . will fascinate [students].” —School Library Journal “Delightful. . . . The author does a superb job of presenting the story of a remarkable concept . . . in a relaxed and entertaining style.” —Professor Artur Ekert, Leigh Trapnell Professor of Quantum Physics, Cambridge University

Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY RT BOOK REVIEWS • An ambitious beauty seeking a spot among the elite is thwarted by a most disruptive gentleman in Cecilia Grant’s witty, elegant, and exquisitely sensual novel. Kate Westbrook has dreams far bigger than romance. Love won’t get her into London’s most consequential parties, nor prevent her sisters from being snubbed and looked down upon—all because their besotted father unadvisedly married an actress. But a noble husband for Kate would deliver a future most suited to the granddaughter of an earl. Armed with ingenuity, breathtaking beauty, and the help of an idle aunt with connections, Kate is poised to make her dreams come true. Unfortunately, a familiar face—albeit a maddeningly handsome one—appears bent on upsetting her scheme. Implored by Kate’s worried father to fend off the rogues eager to exploit his daughter’s charms, Nick Blackshear has set aside the torch he’s carried for Kate in order to do right by his friend. Anyway, she made quite clear that his feelings were not returned—though policing her won’t abate Nick’s desire. Reckless passion leads to love’s awakening, but time is running out. Kate must see for herself that the charms of high society are nothing compared to the infinite sweet pleasures demanded by the heart. Praise for A Woman Entangled “In the third of her Blackshear family series, Grant tackles class distinction and complex family dynamics in a wonderful sensual romance and witty tale in the style of Jane Austen . . . Grant skillfully takes a shallow, immature heroine and develops her into a likable, admirable grown woman. Grant is a smart, innovative, clever writer.”—RT Book Reviews “Wielding a deliciously sharp wit that even Jane Austen would envy, Grant delivers yet another cleverly conceived and deftly choreographed Regency historical that is both lushly sensual and thoroughly romantic. Readers who have yet to discover Grant’s impeccably written romances are in for a rare treat.”—Booklist (starred review) “An emotionally rich, sensually lush romance.”—Kirkus Reviews “Cecilia Grant is swiftly becoming one of my favorite historical romance authors, with her complex characters and thoughtful explorations of how their historical period shapes them. If you love multifaceted stories, definitely give her work a try!”—Heroes and Heartbreakers “The writing and characterization is every bit as good as I’ve come to expect, and Ms. Grant’s economic, restrained style works beautifully to allow the depth of emotion that bubbles under the surface throughout the story to speak for itself. There is no verbiage for the sake of it; this author pays her readers the huge compliment of trusting us with her material and letting us work things out for ourselves.”—All About Romance
