Now this loose cannon is part of the Eternal Guardians—elite warriors assigned to protect the human realm—whether he likes it or not. Orpheus has but one goal: to locate a magical medallion with supernatural powers. He’s just not expecting a woman to get in the way, especially not a Siren as gorgeous as Skyla. Unable to resist her, the two become unlikely allies. He simply has no idea she’s an assassin sent to seduce, entrap, then ultimately destroy him. Yet Skyla herself might have the most to lose. There’s a reason Orpheus feels so familiar, a reason her body seems to crave him. Perhaps he’s not the man everyone thinks… Then again…maybe he’s exactly that man. The truth could reveal a deadly secret as old as the Eternal Guardians themselves. *** All books in the Eternal Guardians series can be read in order or as stand-alones: MARKED - Book 1 ENTWINED - Book 2 TEMPTED - Book 3 ENRAPTURED - Book 4 ENSLAVED - Book 5 BOUND - Book 6 TWISTED - Book 7 RAVAGED - Novella, Book 7.5 AWAKENED - Book 8 UNCHAINED - Novella, Book 8.25 HUNTED - Novella, Book 8.5 ENSNARED - Novella, Book 8.75 and coming soon... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Super Black places the appearance of black superheroes alongside broad and sweeping cultural trends in American politics and pop culture, which reveals how black superheroes are not disposable pop products, but rather a fascinating racial phenomenon through which futuristic expressions and fantastic visions of black racial identity and symbolic political meaning are presented. Adilifu Nama sees the value—and finds new avenues for exploring racial identity—in black superheroes who are often dismissed as sidekicks, imitators of established white heroes, or are accused of having no role outside of blaxploitation film contexts. Nama examines seminal black comic book superheroes such as Black Panther, Black Lightning, Storm, Luke Cage, Blade, the Falcon, Nubia, and others, some of whom also appear on the small and large screens, as well as how the imaginary black superhero has come to life in the image of President Barack Obama. Super Black explores how black superheroes are a powerful source of racial meaning, narrative, and imagination in American society that express a myriad of racial assumptions, political perspectives, and fantastic (re)imaginings of black identity. The book also demonstrates how these figures overtly represent or implicitly signify social discourse and accepted wisdom concerning notions of racial reciprocity, equality, forgiveness, and ultimately, racial justice.

Book Globalization Consumption And Popular Culture In East Asia

Download or read book Globalization Consumption And Popular Culture In East Asia written by Tai Wei Lim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide comprehensive empirical and theoretical studies of expanding fandom communities in East Asia through the commodification of Japanese, Korean and Chinese popular cultures in the digital era. Using a multidisciplinary approach including political economy, East Asian studies, political science, international relations concepts and history, this book focuses on a few research objectives. In terms of methodology, it is an area studies approach based on interpretative work, observation studies, policy and textual analysis. First, it aims to examine the closely intertwined relationship between the three major stakeholders in the iron triangle of production companies, consumers and states (i.e., role of government in policy promotion). Second, it studies the interpenetration, adaptation, innovation and hybridization of exogenous Western culture with traditional popular cultures in (North) East Asia. Third, it studies the influence of popular cultures and how cultural products resonate with a regional audience through collective consumption, contents reflective of normative values, the emotive and cognitive appeal of familiar images and social learning as well as peer effect found in fan communities. It then examines how consumption contributes to soft cultural influence and how governments leverage on its comparative advantages and cultural assets for commercial success and in the process augment national (cultural) influence. These questions will be discussed and analyzed and contextualized through the case studies of J-pop (Japanese popular culture), K-pop (Korean popular culture or Hallyu) and Chinese popular culture (including Mando-pop and Taiwanese popular culture).

Book excerpt: In this extraordinary debut novel with its deft nod to Dickensian heroes and rogues, Mira Bartók tells the story of Arthur, a shy, fox-like foundling with only one ear and a desperate desire to belong, as he seeks his destiny. Have you been unexpectedly burdened by a recently orphaned or unclaimed creature? Worry not! We have just the solution for you! Welcome to the Home for Wayward and Misbegotten Creatures, an institution run by evil Miss Carbunkle, a cunning villainess who believes her terrified young charges exist only to serve and suffer. Part animal and part human, the groundlings toil in classroom and factory, forbidden to enjoy anything regular children have, most particularly singing and music. For the Wonderling, an innocent-hearted, one-eared, fox-like eleven-year-old with only a number rather than a proper name — a 13 etched on a medallion around his neck — it is the only home he has ever known. But unexpected courage leads him to acquire the loyalty of a young bird groundling named Trinket, who gives the Home’s loneliest inhabitant two incredible gifts: a real name — Arthur, like the good king in the old stories — and a best friend. Using Trinket’s ingenious invention, the pair escape over the wall and embark on an adventure that will take them out into the wider world and ultimately down the path of sweet Arthur’s true destiny. Richly imagined, with shimmering language, steampunk motifs, and gripping, magical plot twists, this high adventure fantasy is the debut novel of award-winning memoirist Mira Bartók and has already been put into development for a major motion picture.

Loving her has never come with choice - it consumed and burned and before I knew it I was hers. Dace A man is defined by the secrets he keeps and the demons he carries. I never knew I longed for light until the rays burned me. Now, there's nothing I wouldn't do to hold tightly to the light I've captured. She's a good girl and she's come from a good world. We're as opposite as opposite can be, but she's the other side of my coin - the day to my night. She's the truth to my secrets and the redemption to my sins. Her heart is my salvation and her body is my obsession. But loving her comes with a risk I'm not sure I can take. Ella He's become my safe place when everything I knew disintegrated around me. In his arms, I find solace and safety and laughter in a time where I'm suffocated by pain. He came into my world without any warning, conquering and claiming. They tell me he's dark and dangerous. I've been warned and I know I should stay away, but I can't seem to help myself. He's a craving I can't deny when the world keeps tossing us together. I know there are things I don't know, but every layer I uncover reveals a man my soul seems to recognize. He's chiseling away my heart, but I'm unsure if he's invading the fractured pieces, or stealing them. Either way, I don't think I have the strength to deny him. Even if I did, I don't know if I would. Is it really up to me to decide if love prevails over darkness? Or, are some plans fated long before we come to be? I'm beginning to believe I was fated for him - crafted entirely to enrapture all that he is.

Book Ecstasy in the Classroom

Download or read book Ecstasy in the Classroom written by Ayelet Even-Ezra and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can ecstatic experiences be studied with the academic instruments of rational investigation? What kinds of religious illumination are experienced by academically minded people? And what is the specific nature of the knowledge of God that university theologians of the Middle Ages enjoyed compared with other modes of knowing God, such as rapture, prophecy, the beatific vision, or simple faith? Ecstasy in the Classroom explores the interface between academic theology and ecstatic experience in the first half of the thirteenth century, formative years in the history of the University of Paris, medieval Europe’s “fountain of knowledge.” It considers little-known texts by William of Auxerre, Philip the Chancellor, William of Auvergne, Alexander of Hales, and other theologians of this community, thus creating a group portrait of a scholarly discourse. It seeks to do three things. The first is to map and analyze the scholastic discourse about rapture and other modes of cognition in the first half of the thirteenth century. The second is to explicate the perception of the self that these modes imply: the possibility of transformation and the complex structure of the soul and its habits. The third is to read these discussions as a window on the predicaments of a newborn community of medieval professionals and thereby elucidate foundational tensions in the emergent academic culture and its social and cultural context. Juxtaposing scholastic questions with scenes of contemporary courtly romances and reading Aristotle’s Analytics alongside hagiographical anecdotes, Ecstasy in the Classroom challenges the often rigid historiographical boundaries between scholastic thought and its institutional and cultural context.

Book Thus Spake the Dervish

Download or read book Thus Spake the Dervish written by Alexandre Papas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thus Spake the Dervish explores the unfamiliar history of marginal Sufis, known as dervishes, in early modern and modern Central Asia over a period of 500 years. It draws on various sources (Persian chronicles and treatises, Turkic literature, Russian and French ethnography, the author’s fieldwork) to examine five successive cases, each of which corresponds to a time period, a specific socially marginal space, and a particular use of mystical language. Including an extensive selection of writings by dervishes, this book demonstrates the diversity and tenacity of Central Asian Sufism over a long period. Here translated into a Western language for the first time, the extracts from primary texts by marginal Sufis allow a rare insight into their world. The original French edition of this book, Ainsi parlait le dervice, was published by Editions du Cerf (Paris, France). Translated by Caroline Kraabel.
