Download or read book Colloquium De Giorgi 2010 2012 written by Umberto Zannier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2001 the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa has organized the "Colloquio De Giorgi", a series of colloquium talks named after Ennio De Giorgi. The Colloquio is addressed to a general mathematical audience, and especially meant to attract graduate students and advanced undergraduate students. The lectures are intended to be not too technical, in fields of wide interest. They must provide an overview of the general topic, possibly in a historical perspective, together with a description of more recent progress. The idea of collecting the materials from these lectures and publishing them in annual volumes came out recently, as a recognition of their intrinsic mathematical interest, and also with the aim of preserving memory of these events.

Download or read book Topological Circle Planes and Topological Quadrangles written by Andreas E Schroth and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-11-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research note presents a complete treatment of the connection between topological circle planes and topological generalized quadrangles. The author uses this connection to provide a better understanding of the relationships between different types of circle planes and to solve a topological version of the problem of Apollonius. Topological Circle Planes and Topological Quadrangles begins with a foundation in classical circle planes and the real symmetric generalized quadrangle and the connection between them. This provides a solid base from which the author offers a more generalized exploration of the topological case. He also compares this treatment to the finite case. Subsequent chapters examine Laguerre, Möbius, and Minkowski planes and their respective relationships to antiregular quadrangles. The author addresses the Lie geometry of each and discuss the relationships of circle planes-the "sisters" of Möbius, Laguerre, and Minkowski planes - and concludes by solving a topological version of the problem of Apollonius in Laguerre, Möbius, and Minkowski planes. The treatment offered in this volume offers complete coverage of the topic. The first part of the text is accessible to anyone with a background in analytic geometry, while the second part requires basic knowledge in general and algebraic topology. Researchers interested in geometry-particularly in topological geometry-will find this volume intriguing and informative. Most of the results presented are new and can be applied to various problems in the field of topological circle planes. Features
Download or read book Conjugate Gradient Type Methods for Ill Posed Problems written by Martin Hanke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conjugate gradient method is a powerful tool for the iterative solution of self-adjoint operator equations in Hilbert space. This volume summarizes and extends the developments of the past decade concerning the applicability of the conjugate gradient method (and some of its variants) to ill posed problems and their regularization. Such problems occur in applications from almost all natural and technical sciences, including astronomical and geophysical imaging, signal analysis, computerized tomography, inverse heat transfer problems, and many more This Research Note presents a unifying analysis of an entire family of conjugate gradient type methods. Most of the results are as yet unpublished, or obscured in the Russian literature. Beginning with the original results by Nemirovskii and others for minimal residual type methods, equally sharp convergence results are then derived with a different technique for the classical Hestenes-Stiefel algorithm. In the final chapter some of these results are extended to selfadjoint indefinite operator equations. The main tool for the analysis is the connection of conjugate gradient type methods to real orthogonal polynomials, and elementary properties of these polynomials. These prerequisites are provided in a first chapter. Applications to image reconstruction and inverse heat transfer problems are pointed out, and exemplarily numerical results are shown for these applications.
Download or read book Common Zeros of Polynominals in Several Variables and Higher Dimensional Quadrature written by Yuan Xu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-10-10 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a systematic study of the common zeros of polynomials in several variables which are related to higher dimensional quadrature. The author uses a new approach which is based on the recent development of orthogonal polynomials in several variables and differs significantly from the previous ones based on algebraic ideal theory. Featuring a great deal of new work, new theorems and, in many cases, new proofs, this self-contained work will be of great interest to researchers in numerical analysis, the theory of orthogonal polynomials and related subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appliies variational methods and critical point theory on infinite dimenstional manifolds to some problems in Lorentzian geometry which have a variational nature, such as existence and multiplicity results on geodesics and relations between such geodesics and the topology of the manifold.
Download or read book A Method for Computing Unsteady Flows in Porous Media written by R Raghavan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-contained and concise, this Research Note provides a basis to study unsteady flow in saturated porous media. It provides for the development of algorithms that examine three-dimensional flows subject to complicated boundary conditions that are a natural consequence of flow in geological systems. A new way to understand the flow in porous media is presented. The authors pay attention to computational considerations, and options for developing codes are addressed. The note consists of five chapters: the first is introductory; the second and third are devoted to showing how one arrives at the solutions of interest; the fourth chapter presents various reformulations to aid computations and presents a few illustrative examples; the fifth chapter is a natural progression of the first four chapters to more complicated visualizations of flow in porous media.

Book excerpt: Module theory is an important tool for many different branches of mathematics, as well as being an interesting subject in its own right. Within module theory, the concept of injective modules is particularly important. Extending modules form a natural class of modules which is more general than the class of injective modules but retains many of its
