Book Psychical Research for the Plain Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Psychical Research for the Plain Man Classic Reprint written by S. M. Kingsford and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychical Research for the Plain Man Professor Henri Bergson, in his Presidential address to the Society for Psychical Research in 1913, after discussing the differences between scientific, historical and judicial certainty, stated: - "I am led to believe in telepathy, just as I believe in the defeat of the Invincible Armada. My belief is not the mathematical certainty that the demonstration of Pythagoras' theorem gives me, it is not the physical certainty that I have of the law of the fall of bodies, but it is at least all the certainty that we obtain in a historical or judicial matter." Whilst it is obvious that scientific questions, and to a lesser extent historical questions, must be left to experts; yet the ultimate decision of Guilty, or Not Guilty, in a trial for murder rest with twelve jurymen, and not with the expert judge; though the summing up of the judge is intended to instruct the jury, and influence their verdict. It has unfortunately happened in the matter of evidence for supernormal occurrences, with which is involved the hope of life after death, that the judge and the jury, the expert and the man in the street, seldom or never come into contact. For nearly forty years the Society for Psychical Research acting as judge, has been summing up in an impartial manner the evidence for and against supernormal occurrences; but the jury, the general public, knows practically nothing about either the evidence or the summing up. The general public derives its ideas either from paragraphs in newspapers, which mostly turn the whole thing into ridicule, without argument; or from books of 'ghost stories' written by people who treat the existence of beings they call 'Elementals, ' as an established fact, and mention chats with Charlotte Bronte as everyday occurrences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychical Research and the Resurrection There is no class of phenomena that have a greater interest for many persons at the present day than those which are attributed to subliminal conscious ness or secondary personality. These terms figure so prominently in all discussions of obscure problems in psychology, and especially in literature which objects to spiritistic theories, that it may be well to make clear what they mean. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mrs. Piper the Society for Psychical Research But the publication 'of this translation has been actually desired and encouraged by many individuals in the Society, it has been revised throughout by a member of their Council, and it is introduced to the general reader by their President. The Society, indeed, is prepared to accept M. Sage's volume as a faithful and convenient résume' of experiments conducted under its own auspices, and so far as it contains statements of fact, these statements are quoted from authoritative sources. For the comments, deductions or criticisms therein contained, the acute intellect of M. Sage is alone responsible. Download or read book Borderland of Psychical Research Classic Reprint written by James Hervey Hyslop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Borderland of Psychical Research I have not tried in this to make any contribution to science. I am not trying anything new or sensa tional, but only to aid a little in the general enlight enment of those who are seeking some way of an in telligent understanding of the human mind in its less normal experiences. Hence the book must not be adj udged from the point of view of the trained psy chologist as an effort to help scholars, but from the standpoint of public education as designed to do what text-books can hardly undertake. I have been free with illustrations and striking incidents, both as a means of exhibiting the nature of the problems of psychic research and of creating interest and intelli gence regarding them. If the work avails to serve any such purpose, I shall be satisfied. But it is de signed as a conservative treatment of very perplexing questions, and any expectations that it will do more will mistake both its aim and its usefulness. It simply touches upon problems which yet await investigation, and, though it proceeds along the lines of well-estab lished truths, it suggests what there may be beyond them. Janna H. Hump. Download or read book Psychical Research Classic Reprint written by W. F. Barrett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychical Research To compress into a small volume such as the present an outline of psychical research has proved a more formidable task than I anticipated when the Editors asked me to undertake this work. The problems are so new and entangled and the results so startling that it is very difficult to present them in a brief yet readable and convincing form. A superficial sketch of the subject might have been given, but that seemed hardly worthy of the aim which the Editors have in view. I have therefore endeavoured to give a brief survey in separate chapters of the principal lines of work and of the results so far achieved by the Society for Psychical Research. One of the most difficult tasks was to compress into a chapter or two an intelligible View of the laborious work of the Society during recent years in the investigation of automatic writing and the evidence this may afford for survival of bodily death: a critical inqui1y that extends over several bulky Volumes of the Society's Proceedings. Happily my friend, Miss Jane Barlow, D. Litt., who has made a careful study of this subject and is one OI. Book Essays in Psychical Research Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays in Psychical Research Classic Reprint written by Ada Goodrich-Freer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Psychical Research The papers which are here collected from various periodicals in which they have appeared, are in every sense essays in Inquiry. There is little in them for those who know; for the Spiritualist who with certainty explains, or for the Materialist who, with equal certainty, ignores. In spite of twelve years association with the Society for Psychical Research I can profess no special sources of information, impose no theories, dogmatise as to no deductions. I have no claim to the attention of others, but such as they may grant to a lifelong experience of some of the phenomena under consideration. My earliest fulfilled premonition was recorded when less than three years old, and though such things were a punishable offence in nursery and schoolroom, they persisted in right of heredity, of temperament, possibly of intercourse with Nature in her wilder utterances: psychic experience being a state to live in, not an art to acquire. It is, perhaps, because certain of the phenomena called "psychic" are as familiar to me as any other phenomena of nature, that I do not regard them as in any sense supernatural, that I can approach them with more calm than the beginner, and less parti pris than the convert; that I have nothing to ask of the professional medium, and no occasion for offence from the vulgar trivialities of the stance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Evidences in Psychical Research: A Record of Investigations, With Selected, Examples of Recent S. Results MY friend Mr. J. Arthur Hill, having been more or less concerned in various remarkable experiences, thinks it desirable to publish them, and at the same time to discuss briefly the general subject from a reasonable point of view and in the light of a considerable knowledge of what has been done by others. He has asked me to introduce his little book to the Public; and accordingly I have pleasure in testifying to the careful and responsible truthfulness which characterises his presentation, and to the unemotional habit of mind with which he regards these phenomena.
