Book excerpt: The College of Natural Science and Mathematics, NSM, at California State University Sacramento has a low retention rate, high failure rate and a large achievement gap for freshmen students. Freshmen students who are part of the underrepresented minority -- Black, Latino/a, American Indian and Pacific Islander students -- have even higher failure rates and lower retention rates than the rest of the student population. Of the nine subjects offered by NSM, the courses in the subject of chemistry consistently have the highest failure rates and lowest retention rates. Despite several calls for an increase in science workers, there have been reports of shortages of college graduates with advanced STEM degrees. It is clear that changes need to be made to help boost the retention rate in order to help meet the demand for science workers. This study uses action research to investigate the effect of using humanistic approaches to science, inclusive pedagogy, and affective learning objectives in order keep students engaged and to increase students' sense of belonging in a science course. Previous studies have shown that student engagement and a sense of belonging are both positively correlated with academic achievement. By developing techniques and interventions to help students stay engaged with course material, this study demonstrates that small interventions can have a positive effect on student perseverance and sense of belonging. For this study, five new interventions were introduced in the introductory chemistry course CHEM 4: Chemical Calculations. The interventions focused on adding human elements and social relevance to science education. As a result of these interventions, CHEM 4 students indicated that they felt a greater sense of belonging at the end of the semester than they did at the beginning of the semester. Based on student responses on surveys, students also appeared to maintain their level of interest and engagement throughout the semester. While this study shows that the interventions had a positive effect on students during the two semesters that interventions were implemented, the failure rates and achievement gaps for CHEM 4 remained high. Since this study attempted to address student attitudes to impact student performance, it will be important to monitor both immediate and long-term outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a critical need for additional STEM degree recipients to meet the deficit in STEM workforce in the United States. Introductory and General Chemistry are courses that are at the foundation of many STEM programs and both have a relatively low pass rate. Therefore, it is of great interest to chemical education researchers to improve student outcomes for foundational chemistry courses. One theoretical framework for promoting education is Meaningful Learning. Knowledge that is built upon prior knowledge has greater retention and application to new contexts than rote (memorized) knowledge. In this thesis, three studies will be presented based on this framework. The first involves the implementation of Creative Exercises (CEs) as an open-ended assessment in Introductory Chemistry at a public four-year university and a community college in the southwestern United States. CEs were shown to improve student performance and a decrease in the DFW rate was observed in the treatment groups. The control group had traditional (e.g. multiple choice) assessment. Students' linking of concepts was visualized through network maps, and open coding revealed that students viewed CEs as a useful study tool that helped them to review prior knowledge and to connect chemistry concepts. The second study combined CEs with concept maps (CMs) which have been previously demonstrated to help students to link concepts together. This study was conducted in a third-quarter general chemistry course at an R1 public university. While no gains were shown through ANCOVA between pre-post concept inventory, students were given conceptual and affective interviews in focus groups. The data analyzed from these interviews revealed that students who received both interventions provided more sophisticated conceptual responses. The final study involves the Measure of Linked Concepts (originally based on CE responses) and the addition of a metacognitive component to help students to think about how they learn chemistry. Students performed significantly better on the assessment after the introduction of the metacognition exercise. MLC performance was also found to be a significant predictor of final exam scores through a multiple regression model. All three studies provide insight into future implementations of the assessments and future directions for research.

It is increasingly imperative that educational environments which serve high numbers of underrepresented groups find ways to decrease equity gaps for their students in these areas. Support programs have been shown to increase student success in STEM courses. Santa Monica College (SMC) has implemented a support program for students in Chemistry 10 (Introductory Chemistry), called Chemistry 10 Boot Camp, a voluntary outside-of-class tutorial and practice session geared to provide additional support and instruction to students. The program was started in 2014 to increase success rates for underrepresented minority students, a large population of students at SMC. This study evaluates the efficacy of the Chemistry 10 Boot Camp program and provides recommendations for strengthening the program. Program efficacy was assessed in two ways: 1) quantitatively to determine if participation in Boot Camp is related to course success as measured by student grades and retention, and 2) qualitatively to investigate how students value the program and their attendance concerns through a student experience survey, which was also the basis for program recommendations. Boot Camp participation was determined to be related to increased success rates and decreased equity gaps in Chemistry 10, and a large majority of students found the program to be effective in supporting their success in Chemistry 10.
