Book Enhancement of Service Life of Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders Using FRP Composites

Download or read book Enhancement of Service Life of Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders Using FRP Composites written by Muhammad Shafqat Ali and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research aims at enhancing the service life of the prestressed concrete bridge girders, using fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite shell on the lower flange to impede the ingress of deleterious elements into the concrete. The FRP shell would help to retard the resulting deterioration reactions and achieve more durable bridges for a considerably increased service life. The behavior of prestressed concrete bridge girders with FRP shells on the tension flange was investigated experimentally. The flexural characteristics of FRP shell and concrete interface along with the effect of the steel reinforcement ratio were studied experimentally. This FRP shell was bonded around the lower part of the concrete beams, constructed with four different reinforcement ratios. The beam specimens with the FRP shell showed a significant enhancement in their strength, stiffness and energy absorption capacities, as compared with the associated control beams. The flexural behavior of cast-in-place prestressed concrete beams with FRP shell was studied to examine the contribution of the bonded FRP shell to the strength, stiffness, ductility and energy absorption capacity of prestressed concrete beam specimens, for five different levels of prestressing. The initial cracking, yield and ultimate strengths of the beam specimens with FRP shell were significantly higher than those of the associated control beam specimens. The FRP shell and the prestressing force enhanced the strength and stiffness of the beams. The long-term durability of the FRP shell to act as a barrier against ingress of aggressive elements, such as moisture and chlorides into the proposed FRP shell-concrete system, was examined experimentally in a preliminary manner. Detailed tests on concrete specimens reinforced externally with FRP shells subjected to accelerated moisture and salt solution at control temperatures were performed. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine the effects caused by aging, with time, temperature and chloride injection pressure. The FRP shell, acting as a barrier, showed a significant resistance against chloride ingress by significantly slowing down the chlorides ingress rate and the total amount of chlorides. For a prestressed concrete girder with an FRP shell, the accumulated time for chloride penetration and reaching the level of prestressing steel strands was predicted to be more than 135 years. These results suggest that the FRP shell is quite effective in improving the durability characteristics of prestressed concrete girders and can significantly extend their service life. " --

Book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering

Download or read book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering written by N. Uddin and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-quality and expedient repair methods are necessary to address concrete deterioration that can occur in bridge structures. Most infrastructure-related applications of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs) use hand layup methods. Hand layup is tedious, labor-intensive and results are sensitive to personnel skill level. An alternative method of FRP application is vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). VARTM uses single-sided molding technology to infuse resin over fabrics wrapping large structures, such as bridge girders and columns. There is no research currently available on the interface developed, when VARTM processing is adopted to wrap fibers such as carbon and/ or glass over concrete structures. This chapter investigates the shear and flexural strength gains of a beam by carbon fiber cast on concrete using the VARTM method. The carbon fiber composite was made using Sikadur HEX 103C and low viscosity epoxy resin Sikadur 300. Tests were conducted to determine and document the gains of FRP rehabilitated beams applied by the VARTM method compared to the hand layup method of application. This newly introduced technique to repair and retrofit a simple span I-565 prestressed concrete bridge girder in Huntsville, Alabama, was implemented in the field within two days without any traffic interruption, and the field demonstration of this newly introduced technique to civil infrastructure is presented to the end.

Book Development of Load and Resistance Factor Design for FRP Strengthening of Reinforced Concrete Structures

Download or read book Development of Load and Resistance Factor Design for FRP Strengthening of Reinforced Concrete Structures written by Rebecca Anne Atadero and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are an increasingly adopted technology for the renewal of existing concrete structures. In order to encourage the further use of these materials, a design code is needed that considers the inherent material variability of the composite, as well as the variations introduced during field manufacture and environmental exposure while in service. Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) is a reliability-based design methodology that provides an ideal framework for these considerations and is compatible with existing trends in civil engineering design codes. This dissertation studies the application of LRFD to FRP strengthening schemes with an emphasis on wet layup, carbon fiber composites applied to reinforced concrete T-beam bridge girders. Models to describe variation in the existing structural materials and the structural loading are drawn from the literature. Techniques for reliability analysis are discussed, and existing work on externally bonded FRP reliability is surveyed. Stochastic variation in the FRP is characterized based on tensile testing of several sets of field-manufactured, wet layup composites. A general design procedure applicable to many different situations is proposed using a composite specific resistance factor to consider material variability, a set of Application Factors to account for deviations introduced through field manufacture, and an environment and service-life specific factor for FRP degradation. Preliminary resistance factors for design of FRP strengthening are calibrated over a range of design scenarios. FRP degradation is considered based on existing durability models, and continued degradation of the structure due to general corrosion of the reinforcing steel is included. The girders used for calibration are selected as representative examples from a sample of California bridge plans. The reliability has been evaluated using simulation and first-order reliability methods. An example of the proposed design procedure, using the calibrated resistance factors, is provided. The results of this work bring to light the many variables affecting the reliability of strengthened members and the need for continuing research to better describe these variables. Two variables of particular significance, requiring extensive further study, are the state of the existing structure when strengthening is applied and the loads acting on the structure.
