Book The Hub s Metropolis

Download or read book The Hub s Metropolis written by James C. O'Connell and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of the Boston metropolitan area, from country villages and streetcar suburbs to exurban sprawl and “smart growth.” Boston's metropolitan landscape has been two hundred years in the making. From its proto-suburban village centers of 1800 to its far-flung, automobile-centric exurbs of today, Boston has been a national pacesetter for suburbanization. In The Hub's Metropolis, James O'Connell charts the evolution of Boston's suburban development. The city of Boston is compact and consolidated—famously, “the Hub.” Greater Boston, however, stretches over 1,736 square miles and ranks as the world's sixth largest metropolitan area. Boston suburbs began to develop after 1820, when wealthy city dwellers built country estates that were just a short carriage ride away from their homes in the city. Then, as transportation became more efficient and affordable, the map of the suburbs expanded. The Metropolitan Park Commission's park-and-parkway system, developed in the 1890s, created a template for suburbanization that represents the country's first example of regional planning. O'Connell identifies nine layers of Boston's suburban development, each of which has left its imprint on the landscape: traditional villages; country retreats; railroad suburbs; streetcar suburbs (the first electric streetcar boulevard, Beacon Street in Brookline, was designed by Frederic Law Olmsted); parkway suburbs, which emphasized public greenspace but also encouraged commuting by automobile; mill towns, with housing for workers; upscale and middle-class suburbs accessible by outer-belt highways like Route 128; exurban, McMansion-dotted sprawl; and smart growth. Still a pacesetter, Greater Boston has pioneered antisprawl initiatives that encourage compact, mixed-use development in existing neighborhoods near railroad and transit stations. O'Connell reminds us that these nine layers of suburban infrastructure are still woven into the fabric of the metropolis. Each chapter suggests sites to visit, from Waltham country estates to Cambridge triple-deckers.

Book Enhanced Transition Through Outward Internationalization

Download or read book Enhanced Transition Through Outward Internationalization written by Andreja Jaklic and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Among the major challenges transition economies are facing is how to cope with globalization. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has proved the most dynamic (defensive and offensive) response, as an integration and network tool, yet outward FDI has so far been overlooked in research. The vitality of outward FDI as an entry mode to the global economy is discussed in this authoritative volume from various angles, beginning with the context of the development strategy and the transition process. The experiences of the Slovene way of internationalization are compared with those of other transition economies. Readers will learn about the size, geographical distribution, trends and sectoral allocation of such outward FDI (OFDI) as well as the major motives, barriers and problems. The book also responds to questions about the extent to which outward FDI is instrumental in development/transition, EU accession and competitiveness strengthening. Based on extensive empirical research and focused case studies, the volume provides valuable lessons for other EU candidate countries and transition economies, while managerial experiences in entering Central and Eastern European markets offer universal internationalization lessons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliable and metrologically comparable results of quantitative analytical methods are essential to assure that decisions taken on their basis have meaning and context. Problems with combining measurement results, calculating their uncertainties and establishing metrological traceability can prove complicated and ambiguous for measurement scientists. Combining and Reporting Analytical Results discusses in detail the problems faced by scientists, and presents a variety of approaches across biological, chemical and environmental sciences to resolving these types of issues. Topics include: validated methods of analysis; application of internal quality control procedures; participation in proficiency testing schemes; metrological traceability of measurement results and associated uncertainties, as well as some quality system issues and formal accreditation. Written by leading experts, and with worked examples and illustrations throughout, this invaluable reference source is ideal for analysts from various scientific fields.

Book Roads to Prosperity

Download or read book Roads to Prosperity written by Gary S. Sands and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores popular economic development strategies in midsize Canadian urban areas. Roads to Prosperity: Economic Development Lessons from Midsize Canadian Cities explores the relative prosperity of midsize Canadian urban areas (population 50,000 to 400,000) over the past two decades. Communities throughout North America have strived for decades to maintain and enhance the prosperity of their residents. In the areas that are the focus of this research, the results of these efforts have been mixed—some communities have been relatively successful while others have fallen further behind the national averages. Midsize cities often lack the resources, both internal and external, to sustain and enhance their prosperity. Policies and strategies that have been successful in larger urban areas may be less effective (or unaffordable) in smaller ones. Roads to Prosperity first examines the economic structure of forty-two Canadian urban regions that fall within the midsize range to determine the economic specializations that characterize these communities and to trace how these specializations have evolved over the time period between 1991 and 2011. While urban areas with an economic base of natural resource or manufacturing industries tend to retain this economic function over the years, communities that rely on the service industries have been much more likely to experience some degree of restructuring in their economies over the past twenty years. The overall trend among these communities has been for their employment profiles to become more similar and for their economic specialization to fade over time. The second part of the book looks at a number of currently popular economic development strategies as they have been applied to midsize urban areas and their success and failures. While there appears to be no single economic development strategy that will lead to greater prosperity for every community, Sands and Reese explore the various factors that help explain why some work and others don’t. Those with an interest in urban planning and community development will find this monograph highly informative.

Download or read book Geomarketing written by Gérard Cliquet and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title describes the state of the art in all areas of spatial marketing, discussing the various constituents which make up the geography of markets. Demand varies according to location and can be measured according to revenue, the number of households, spending patterns and lifestyles. Supply is also dependent on position, because prices, services, products and available shops rely on location, while the difference between supply and demand is the rationale for the role of the trader. The book also covers the way geographic techniques help to solve marketing problems and contains chapters written by contributors with extensive experience in this field; given that it is crucial for companies to direct their marketing correctly at their target audience, this will be indispensable reading for those involved in this area.
