Book Aspects of Early English Keyboard Music before c 1630

Download or read book Aspects of Early English Keyboard Music before c 1630 written by David J. Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-24 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English keyboard music reached an unsurpassed level of sophistication in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries as organists such as William Byrd and his students took a genre associated with domestic, amateur performance and treated it as seriously as vocal music. This book draws together important research on the music, its sources and the instruments on which it was played. There are two chapters on instruments: John Koster on the use of harpsichord during the period, and Dominic Gwynn on the construction of Tudor-style organs based on the surviving evidence we have for them. This leads to a section devoted to organ performance practice in a liturgical context, in which John Harper discusses what the use of organs pitched in F may imply about their use in alternation with vocal polyphony, and Magnus Williamson explores improvisational practice in the Tudor period. The next section is on sources and repertoire, beginning with Frauke Jürgensen and Rachelle Taylor’s chapter on Clarifica me Pater settings, which grows naturally out of the consideration of improvisation in the previous chapter. The next two contributions focus on two of the most important individual manuscript sources: Tihomir Popović challenges assumptions about My Ladye Nevells Booke by reflecting on what the manuscript can tell us about aristocratic culture, and David J. Smith provides a detailed study of the famous Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. The discussion then broadens out into Pieter Dirksen’s consideration of a wider selection of sources relating to John Bull, which in turn connects closely to David Leadbetter’s work on Gibbons, lute sources and questions of style.

Book British Keyboard Music to C 1660

Download or read book British Keyboard Music to C 1660 written by Virginia Brookes and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a work of reference in two parts: part 1 is an itemized list of the contents of all the manuscript and printed sources of British keyboard music to c. 1660; part 2 is a thematic index, listed alphabetically by composer, of all the pieces contained in the sources. Each piece in the index is numbered and that number will also be found against its entry in the source list; thus each piece may be placed in the context of its origins. The book concludes with a computerized code of the musical incipits, so that it is possible to discover if any piece is included in any source. Book Selected Essays on George Gascoigne

Download or read book Selected Essays on George Gascoigne written by Gillian Austen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays situates George Gascoigne in context as the pre-eminent writer of the early part of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. His ceaseless experimentation was hugely influential on those later Elizabethans - including Spenser, Sidney and Shakespeare - who represent the great flowering of the English literary renaissance. Gascoigne rarely returned to a genre, writing prose fiction, blank verse, plays, sonnets, narrative verse, courtly entertainments, satire and many other literary forms, and the later Elizabethans were fully aware of his significance. These essays are organised into three main sections: influences upon Gascoigne, such as Skelton; Gascoigne’s influence on others, including Spenser; and finally a reassessment of his critical neglect and the story behind his marginalised status in the English literary canon. As only the second multi-authored essay collection on Gascoigne, this book makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of this important and often misunderstood writer.

Download or read book St Matthew Passion written by Richard Davy and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book URL: https://www.areditions.com/rr/ycm2/ycm2_017.html The St. Matthew Passion by Richard Davy from the Eton Choirbook is the earliest surviving polyphonic setting of the passion by a known composer. Much of it is intended to be chanted to the Sarum recitation tone for the passion, but Davy sets polyphonically the synagoga¿the sayings of the disciples, the priests, Pilate, and others¿making a total of forty-two polyphonic movements. Unfortunately, its first two folios are missing, making it necessary to reconstruct the first eleven movements completely, and two of the four voices for the next twelve. Such reconstructions have been attempted before, but this edition brings together new analytic tools to aid in the reconstruction and, as an additional option for the presentation of the work, sets the entire passion to the early English translation of the gospel by William Tyndale, a student at Magdalen College Oxford only a few years after the composer¿s period of residence there.

Book Singing Simpkin and other Bawdy Jigs

Download or read book Singing Simpkin and other Bawdy Jigs written by Dr Roger Clegg and published by Royal College of General Practitioners. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A popular crowd-pleaser in the late 16th and mid-17th century, the dramatic jig was a short, comic, bawdy musical-drama which included elements of dance, slapstick and disguise. With a cast of ageing cuckolds and young head-strong wives, knavish clowns, roaring soldiers and country bumpkins, jigs often followed as afterpieces at London’s playhouses, and were performed at fairs, in villages and in private houses. Troublesome to the authorities, they drew the crowds by offering a lively antidote to more sober theatrical fare. This performance edition presents for the first time nine examples of English dramatic jigs from the late sixteenth century through to the Restoration; the scripts are re-united as far as possible with their original tunes. It gives a comprehensive history, discusses sources, plots, instrumentation and dancing, and offers practical information on staging jigs today. Includes: Transcriptions of the original texts Contextual notes: plot synopses and discussion of sources, themes and audience reception Musical notation for each tune, with suggestions for underlay and chords, and notes on instrumention and style Appendix of dance instructions and reconstructions
