Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinctive feature of Western religous life in recent years has been the rediscovery of the contemplative tradition in Christianity. Within the Christian mystical tradition, England holds a unique place, with a number of major figures from the Middle Ages and later whose writings have fascinated generations of readers. This book presents seven of them, five from the medieval period, the golden age of English mysticism - Richard Rolle, Walter Hilton, the author of The Cloud of Unknowing, Julian of Norwich, and Margery Kempe; and two from later centuries - William Law and George Herbert. Each chapter consists of an introductory essay on the life and writings of each individual, followed by carefully chosen extracts from their writings. Those from the medieval period are in fresh new translations. All these writers see the spiritual life as an ongoing process, a pilgrimage. This inner pigrimage requires no outer excursions, but throughout the ages spiritual pilgrims have undertaken physical pilgrimages as well. One aim of this book is to encourage its readers to continue this tradition by visiting sites from which the writings arose. So each chapter is provided with a map of the area of immediate interest and a drawing of the place most associated with each figure, and the introductory essays contain practical information about how to get there. No other anthology of mystical and spiritual writings describes the lives and locations of these individuals in this way. Gordon L. Miller, Ph.D., is a writer and historian living near Seattle, Washington. He attended Milligan College and Christian Theological Seminary. This book developed from a period of post-graduate study at Cambridge University , when he visited the sites described in the book, a journey which, he says, "made the historical grounding of the English mystical tradition much more real to me". He is also the author of Wisdom of the Earth: Visions of an Ecological Faith.

Book excerpt: Spiritual Direction from the English Mystics: 'The Revelations of Divine Love', by Julian of Norwich 'The Cloud of Unknowing', Anonymous 'Scale of Perfection', Walter Hilton The current popularity enjoyed by these 14th century English mystics lies in their vocation to seek union with God. Here, for the first time, Julia Gatta shows these mystics to be prototypes for the modern spiritual director, displaying keen insights into that pastoral art. At the heart of the mystics' writings is their own intense desire not merely to see and know God for themselves, but also to bring others to this union with God.

Download or read book The Puritan Imagination written by Todd D. Baucum and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to add a needed introduction to a way of meditation used among early modern English Protestants, influenced by Bishop Joseph Hall. Furthermore, the major role that Hall had in his Arte of Divine Mediation on late-seventeenth-century Protestant spirituality went beyond the practice of meditation and established a positive claim on the role of the imagination in shaping souls, well into the modern period. Within this context, the questions related to ancient understandings of faith and the interrelationship of divine revelation are discussed with fresh insights for our own times. If a revival of interest emerges again in Hall's work, it would be a compelling and fresh impetus to reclaim the broken imagination evident in many parts of the Western Church.

Book Contesting Orthodoxies in the History of Christianity

Download or read book Contesting Orthodoxies in the History of Christianity written by James Carleton Paget and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2021 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the pursuit of orthodoxy, and its consequences for the history of Christianity. Christianity is a hugely diverse and quarrelsome family of faiths, but most Christians have nevertheless set great store by orthodoxy - literally, 'right opinion' - even if they cannot agree what that orthodoxy should be. The notion that there is a 'catholic', or universal, Christian faith - that which, according to the famous fifth-century formula, has been believed everywhere, at all times and by all people - is itself an act of faith: to reconcile it with the historical fact of persistent division and plurality requires a constant effort. It also requires a variety of strategies, from confrontation and exclusion, through deliberate choices as to what is forgotten or ignored, to creative or even indulgent inclusion. In this volume, seventeen leading historians of Christianity ask how the ideal of unity has clashed, negotiated, reconciled or coexisted with the historical reality of diversity, in a range of historical settings from the early Church through the Reformation era to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These essays hold the huge variety of the Christian experience together with the ideal of orthodoxy, which Christians have never (yet) fully attained but for which they have always striven; and they trace some of the consequences of the pursuit of that ideal for the history of Christianity.
