Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Constitutional History: A Text-Book for Students and Others The very favourable reception which this work has met with, and the short spaoe of time within which its position has been established, constitute a source of legitimate gratification, and I have spared no pains to make the present edition as complete as possible. My obligations to the older writers, Kemble, Lappenberg, Palgrave, and Hallam, as well as to the more recent works of Stubbs, Freeman, and May, are apparent, and have been duly acknowledged. But numerous other writers of eminence have been referred to, and while gladly availing myself of the guidance of previous workers in the same field, I have also personally consulted the Rolls of Parliament, the Mediaeval Chroniclers, and other original authorities, and have endeavoured to arrive at an independent judgment on all points of importance. Book The Constitutional History of England

Download or read book The Constitutional History of England written by Frederic William Maitland and published by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published: Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1908. xxviii, 547 pp. Although Maitland never intended to publish these lectures, they have long been regarded as one of the best introductions to the English Constitution. Delivered in the winter of 1887 and spring of 1888, and edited and published in 1908 by one of Maitland's students, Herbert A.L. Fisher, they cover the period from 1066 to the end of the nineteenth century. Rather than a narrative historical format, they focus on describing the work of the constitution during five distinct moments in English history: 1307, 1509, 1625, 1702 and 1887. They provide an entry to some of the major concepts he later expounded in his seminal work written with Sir Frederick Pollock, The History of English Law. Widely considered the father of modern legal history, FREDERIC WILLIAM MAITLAND 1850-1906] was an English jurist and historian best known for The History of English Law Before the Time of Edward I (1895), written with Sir Frederick Pollock. He was educated at Eton and Cambridge and studied at Lincoln's Inn, London. Maitland was called to the bar in1876 and practiced until 1884, when he became a reader in English law (1884) and professor (1888) at Cambridge. He founded the Selden Society in 1887. Hailed for his original outlook on history, his works had a profound influence on legal scholarship and remain important today.

This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Students Manual of English Constitutional History English AN author needs to justify the appearance of so ambitious and yet so imperfect a work as I fear this will be found A twofold reason has prompted its compilation. In the first place, text-books on Con stitutional History are few, and experience suggests that those which exist deal with the subject on unsatis fac'tory lines. The development of an institution is subordinated to the details of a general narrative. No doubt the natural interest in the play of individual character will always place so-called political history in the van of historical pursuits. But if the study of history is, as it promises, to become a great educational medium, it is to the history of institutions rather than of dynasties or of individual men that we must look to provide the fittest mental training. As a preliminary it is necessary to trace the evolution and growth of each institution or set of institutions separately and apart from the accidental events of contemporaneous political history. Otherwise the institution is lost sight of in a mass of unimportant personal detail; it is difficult to pick up the threads Of its development while the attention of the student is at every turn called off to irrelevant matter, and the mind altogether fails to comprehend the great impersonal movement by which an institution shows itself to be something greater than the greatest man who has helped to mould and to work.
