Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1998, the expansion of Europe overseas required the creation of institutions for governing the conquered peoples, as well as the conquerors, their descendants, and later immigrants. As a group, bureaucrats were essential for the preservation of extensive and long-lasting European colonies. This volume looks in particular at the Americas and sets out the differing responses of Portugal, Spain, Britain and France and the systems they elaborated. A notable theme is the conflict between the demands of the centre, and the local pressures, and the extent to which the bureaucrats often came to identify with these.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Colonial Administration Under Lord Clarendon, 1660-1667 The period between the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 and the Revolution of 1688 was, in England, an epoch of the greatest commercial activity and progress. The begin nings made in the time Of James I, by the founding Of com mercial companies, had by the end of the Cromwellian epoch begun to produce abundant results. Trading companies had proved themselves successful and had increased in numbers until they now carried on their operations in all parts of the known world. In fact the experimental stage in English commercial expansion had been passed and the period of substantial gain had been entered upon. Book A Baronial Family in Medieval England

Download or read book A Baronial Family in Medieval England written by Michael Altschul and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1965. In A Baronial Family in Medieval England: The Clares, 1217–1314, Michael Altschul studies the Clare family during the thirteenth century. The Clares spearheaded the struggle to enforce Magna Carta in the Barons' War. Historians prior to Altschul tended to neglect the Clares' history given the scattered nature of the archives documenting their time as a politically influential and powerful family. This book unfolds chronologically, outlining the Clares' rise to preeminence and describing how they administered their estates and income.

This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Volume II of her ambitious 1909 history of New York City, Van Rensselaer picks up in 1664 during the reconstruction of New Netherland following its loss to England and goes on to chart the city's changing character as the Dutch and English vie for political and cultural influence. Growing by fits and starts, this city of only several thousand people is revealed in all its awkward infancy, from its early revolts and uprisings through its command by the militia in 1689-1691. This is a fascinating and detailed account, perfect for students, historians, and anyone with an interest in pre-Revolutionary New York. Devoted to the study of art and architecture, American author MARIANA GRISWOLD VAN RENSSELAER (1851-1934) was born in New York City and was an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1962. In The Road to Normalcy, Wesley M. Bagby explains how the election of 1920 contributed to momentous shifts in American politics by detailing why the major political parties abandoned sentiments that were widely accepted several years prior to the election. Prior to World War I, two significant streams of progressivism maintained center stage in American politics—the Progressive movement and the world peace movement. The war proved not to be prohibitively distracting for the Progressive movement, which carried on well into the war years. But the war also introduced new elements into American political life, such as the restriction of free speech, popular outbursts of intolerance and hatred encouraged by war propaganda, and a belief in the necessity and efficacy of violence. Many of these elements eroded the ideals undergirding the Progressive movement. The international peace movement reflected the spirit of idealistic internationalism that characterized the tenor of American foreign policy from the beginning to the end of the war. However, the election of 1920, the first presidential election after World War I, addressed the question of whether America would resume its progressive efforts at home and abroad following the war. The election ultimately stymied both political currents, proving to be an end for both the Progressive movement and the world peace movement.
