Book British Banking

Download or read book British Banking written by R. C. Michie and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Financial Crisis made its first appearance in Britain towards the end of 2007 with the failure of the Northern Rock Bank. It then reached an unparalleled intensity a year later when the government was forced to intervene to prevent the collapse of Lloyds/HBOS and RBS/Natwest. Before these events the British banking system possessed a long established reputation for resilience and competence that made it one of the most admired and trusted in the world. The financial crisis of 2007/8, and the subsequent revelations about the behaviour of bankers, destroyed that reputation and drove a desire for a complete reform of the British banking system. Forgotten in this headlong rush towards radical restructuring were the reasons why the British banking system had become so admired and trusted. The aim of this book is to explain why the British banking system gained its reputation for resilience and competence, maintained it for over 100 years, and then lost it in such a rapid and spectacular fashion. To achieve that aim requires a study of the entire banking system. Banks are key components of a complex financial system continually interacting with each other, and constantly changing over time, This makes the conventional distinctions drawn between different types of banks, including those specialising in international finance, savings and loans, corporate lending, and retail deposits and borrowing, inappropriate for any long-term analysis. The distinctions between different types of banks were neither absolute nor permanent but relative and temporary. Banks were also central to both the payments system and the money market without which no modern economy could function. What this book is about is the development of the British banking system as a whole over more than three centuries. Only with such an understanding is it possible to appreciate what the British banking system achieved and then maintained from the middle of the 19th century onwards, why it was lost in such a short space of time, and what needs to be done to return it to the position it once occupied. Without such an understanding the mistakes of the recent past are destined to be repeated time and gain.

Book History of the Bank of England and Its Financial Services to the State Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Bank of England and Its Financial Services to the State Classic Reprint written by Eugen Von Philippovich and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Bank of England and Its Financial Services to the State But though the Bank Of England was at its origin rather an incident Of State finance than the foundation Of a national banking system, its services to the State were very narrowly restricted by statute. It is curious to note that those exchequer functions which it afterwards under took, and Whose gradual assumption it is the principal Object of this book to trace, are not even referred to in the original act and charter. The fact is that the Bank Of England, like most really English institutions, was case made; it owed its form and functions not to systematic planning, but to attempts to meet emergencies as they from time to time arose. Thus the running cash note, which afterwards became the most effective banking instru ment Of the English bank, was an evasion, even if not (as Often alleged) a positive infraction of its charter. The Charter only contemplated an issue Of sealed bills, strictly limited in amount to the capital subscribed. If this was SO with its banking methods, it was equally the case with its relations to the Exchequer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Methods and Machinery of Practical Banking To the english people, in hall and cottage, in city or country, who so cheerfully responded to all my inquiries; and to MY twelve year-old son, the companion of my travels, whose familiar presence made all lands home to me, this volume is cordially inscribed. Mr. Patten was a genial, whole-souled man, one of nature's noble men, whose unexpected and untimely demise was mourned not only by his immediate friends and acquaintances, but by the entire banking community in which he had, for a long time, played so prominent a part. The direct cause of his death was over-work. He died at Boston, May 22, 1886. The papers collected in the present work began in rhodes' journal OF banking in August, 1884, and were continued.
