This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English and French in England, 1066 1100 The present study of the relations between the French and English peoples and tongues in England between 1066 and i'iog is based upon a thesis presented to the faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the doctorate in the year 1914. My original plan was to investigate the whole question of the relations between the two tongues in England during the entire Middle English period, but the stress: of duties in the Department of English has made it impossible to! Pursue the subject beyond the year I 100. Rather than post pone publication longer, I have deemed it best to print that part of the original thesis which concerns itself with the relations. Of the two peoples in the land and therefore aims to lay the necessary foundation for any fresh study of the relations. Be tween the two languages. Book The Normans in England

Download or read book The Normans in England written by A. E. Bland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Normans in England: 1066-1154 This series of English History Source Books is intended for use with any ordinary textbook of English History. Experience has conclusively shown that such apparatus is a valuable - nay, an indispensable - adjunct to the history lesson. It is capable of two main uses: either by way of lively illustration at the close of a lesson, or by way of inference-drawing, before the textbook is read, at the beginning of the lesson. The kind of problems and exercises that may be based on the documents are legion, and are admirably illustrated in a History of England for Schools, Part I., by Keatinge and Frazer, pp. 377-381. However, we have no wish to prescribe for the teacher the manner in which he shall exercise his craft, but simply to provide him and his pupils with materials hitherto not readily accessible for school purposes. The very moderate price of the books in this series should bring them within the reach of every secondary school. Source books enable the pupil to take a more active part than hitherto in the history lesson. Here is the apparatus, the raw material: its use we leave to teacher and taught. Our belief is that the books may profitably be used by all grades of historical students between the standards of fourth-form boys in secondary schools and undergraduates at Universities. What differentiates students at one extreme from those at the other is not so much the kind of subject-matter dealt with, as the amount they can read into or extract from it. In regard to choice of subject-matter, while trying to satisfy the natural demand for certain "stock" documents of vital importance, we hope to introduce much fresh and novel matter. Book The Norman Conquest

Download or read book The Norman Conquest written by Hugh M. Thomas and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the successful Norman invasion of England in 1066, this concise and readable book focuses especially on the often dramatic and enduring changes wrought by William the Conqueror and his followers. From the perspective of a modern social historian, Hugh M. Thomas considers the conquest's wide-ranging impact by taking a fresh look at such traditional themes as the influence of battles and great men on history and assessing how far the shift in ruling dynasty and noble elites affected broader aspects of English history. The author sets the stage by describing English society before the Norman Conquest and recounting the dramatic story of the conquest, including the climactic Battle of Hastings. He then traces the influence of the invasion itself and the Normans' political, military, institutional, and legal transformations. Inevitably following on the heels of institutional reform came economic, social, religious, and cultural changes. The results, Thomas convincingly shows, are both complex and surprising. In some areas where one might expect profound influence, such as government institutions, there was little change. In other respects, such as the indirect transformation of the English language, the conquest had profound and lasting effects. With its combination of exciting narrative and clear analysis, this book will capture students interest in a range of courses on medieval and Western history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Germans in England 1066-1598 This book must bear the stamp of a haste which only the urgency of war can justify. It was written in a few months in the intervals of my daily work, and if it has any merits, it is as a rough sketch and outline of its subject. As usual, I found the British Museum unfailing in its courtesy and in its resources. I have to thank Mr. Ferdinand de Mera for his invaluable assistance in translating German authorities and in vestigating crucial points in the Home Recesse and other German archives, and for his map of the roads, towns, and Kontors of the Hanseatic League. To Miss Thompson I am indebted for transcripts from Tudor manuscripts at the British Museum, to Mr. Claud Mullins for researches in the London Guildhall Library, and to Mr. J. S. Sandars for a revision of my proofs. The head of Queen Elizabeth, who expelled the Ger mans from England, was reproduced by the courtesy of the Medal Department of the British Museum. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England Under the Anglo-Saxon Kings, Vol. 1 of 2 An epoch of great convulsions would scarcely seem to be consistent with the developement of the higher forms of life. Perhaps my estimate of the Middle Ages, which is rather more favourable than that commonly taken, has been coloured by the same tendency to believe in growth rather than in sudden and violent revolutions. It is difficult to study a literature and laws that are as English as our own in spirit and purpose without feeling that we have inherited good as well as evil from the past.
