Download or read book The North south Divide written by Helen M. Jewell and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North-South divide in England is rooted in prehistory and attested throughout recorded time in widely varied sources. This book traces its development from earliest times and provides a corrective to the popular notion that the divide only originated with the Industrial Revolution. A major theme of the study is the development of northern consciousness, and the presence of Scotland across the northern border is seen as an important factor in shaping northern English identity, as well as the attitudes of southern kings and governments to the north.

This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review of Ellwood Fisher's Lecture on the North and the South Each slaveholder exercises in his own household and on his own farm, a jurisdiction nearly as absolute and ex tensive as that exercised in the middle ages of Eutone by a feudal baron on his own domains and over his own vast sals. He is in all matters that do not affect life itself the supreme legislator and judge over his own slaves. w what would be thought of the fairness of a comparison between the records of the court of the high judiciary of England in the days of William the Conqueror or Henry Beauclerk and the records of the king's courts now in England, with a View of ascertaining the compara tite amount OF crime AT these different periods. The mass of crimes were then punished in the baron's courts - mow they are all punished in the king's courts. So the mass OF crimes IN a slave state are pun ished IN the masters' courts - Lin a free State they are punished In the courts Of the Commonwealth. Book The North South Divide in England

Download or read book The North South Divide in England written by Marco Kerlein and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2006-04-26 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,5, University of Constance, course: Area Studies England, language: English, abstract: In England today there is a big social and economic gap between the North and the South. Statistics prove the existence of this North-South divide. England is a highly centralised country and has no regional governments. London is the financial, political and cultural centre. London’s influence is one important reason for the South East being the wealthiest region. The living standards are much better there than in the rest of the country. The decline of the heavy and textile industries after 1945 in the North, once England’s richest region, lead to high unemployment, low productivity and low investments there. This was one cause for the North-South divide we have these days.“Todaythe Northwest is characterised by high out-migration levels and a high proportion of its workforce is unskilled. Agriculture is less productive than in the South.”
