Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England and America, 1763 to 1783, Vol. 1: The History of a Reaction It is always interesting, and often instructive, to look back and see how the great events of the past appeared while they were taking place, and to compare contemporary views with the final verdict of history. One of the greatest uses of such retrospects is to promote a calmer and more tolerant judgment of the events of our own time. We learn that it is possible for majorities to be in the wrong, minorities in the right. And the character and political action of such minorities, and the manner in which the majorities treated their opposition, will be a pretty sure test of the character and moral standard of the nation as a whole at that particular time. Nobody now looks on the quarrel with our North American Colonies as anything but a hideous blunder. Nobody now says that the Ministers who brought it about deserved well of their country. Nobody now thinks that the conscientious but narrow-minded Sovereign, whose influence destroyed the last chances of reconciliation, showed himself thereby to be an enlightened ruler. It is surely worth our while to examine how the quarrel came about, and see what our great-great-grandfathers thought and said of it. Does anything in the story seem to furnish a parallel, or a contrast, for the times in which we live? History, they say, repeats itself. The Seven Years War doubled our National Debt, gave us Canada and Bengal, and lost us America. The Hanoverian Settlement, by bringing Hanover into union with Great Britain, involved us in the whole scheme of European politics and European wars. Book Spain Britain and the American Revolution in Florida 1763 1783

Download or read book Spain Britain and the American Revolution in Florida 1763 1783 written by James W. Raab and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-11-19 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the 1763 Treaty of Paris, Spain relinquished Florida, a land it had possessed for over 200 years, to the British. With revolution imminent, Britain set about populating its two new colonies of East and West Florida with loyal British Tories, ultimately turning St. Augustine into a southern American headquarters for British interests. This volume details the British occupation of colonial Florida immediately before and during the American Revolution with emphasis on the effect this possession had on the course of the war. Beginning with a brief summary of Spanish history, it takes a look at the relative colonial positions of Spain and Britain with regard to the Americas during the pre-revolutionary period. The Georgia-Florida border dispute, the invasion of East Florida and the eventual return of the Spaniards are also discussed. Finally, an appendix details St. Augustine buildings from the revolutionary period which are still standing today.
