Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most six-year-olds can't wait to go to school on that first day in September. It's a sign of coming of age. They get to go to school like the big kids. For an alarmingly large number of these children, however, boredom, anxiety, and fear of learning quickly set in. This happens because societies build schools that achieve much less than they promise, are frustrating for students, and generally fail to help children become adults who can think for themselves. The development of flexible, inquiring minds has rarely been the primary consideration in the design of educational systems. Making students into proper members of society has usually been of much greater concern than developing students who are creative thinkers. Today's schools are organized around yesterday's ideas, needs, and resources. The purpose of this volume is to raise consciousness about the changes needed in the educational system. It is concerned with what is wrong with the educational system and how to improve it. It presents a pragmatic view of what education could be through the use of computer technology -- technology permitting us to pursue the radical notion that children must be allowed to guide their own education because interested learners learn more. Children can and will become voracious learners if they are in charge of their own education. This does not mean letting them play video games all day, but it does mean allowing them to pursue the intellectual goals that interest them, rather than being force-fed knowledge according to someone else's schedule. The school system must face the responsibility of creating learning environments that are so much fun that children cannot wait to get up in the morning and go to school. This volume describes the progress being made at The Institute for the Learning Sciences using computers to provide motivating environments for learning -- environments that enable students to explore new worlds, and learn things by doing them. This technology will allow society to support what is one of the most important parts of a good educational system: the cultivation of individual initiative in students. This text documents the authors' work from the cognitive psychology which underlies it on through to guided tours of a number of the software learning environments they've developed. The CD ROM version of Engines for Education illustrates the types of innovative education software being developed at the Institute for the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University. In addition to providing tours of seven different ILS programs, the CD ROM itself provides an example of a new form of hypermedia system developed at ILS. Containing the complete text of the book with full-text search, the CD ROM enables readers to move fluidly between pages as they would with a traditional book; it also engages the reader through question-answer interactions with the system. Hardware Requirements: Macintosh (not a Macintosh Power PC) with 16M of RAM (13M of free RAM) and a CD ROM Drive. Software Requirements: System 7 (or later version) and Quicktime.

Download or read book Engines of Privilege written by David Kynaston and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rigorous, compelling and balanced examination of the British public school system and the inequalities it entrenches. Private schools are institutions that children who are already privileged attend and have those privileges further entrenched, almost certainly for life, through a high-quality, richly-resourced education. The Engines of Privilege contends that in a society that mouths the virtues of equality of opportunity, of fairness and of social cohesion, the continuation of this educational apartheid amounts to an act of national self-harm that does all of us serious damage. Intrinsic to any vision of the future of Britain has to be the nature of our educational system. Yet the quality of conversation on the issue of private education remains surprisingly sterile, patchy and highly subjective. Accessible, evidence-based and inclusive, Engines of Privilege aims to kick-start a long overdue national debate. Clear, vigorous prose is combined with forensic analysis to compelling effect, illuminating the painful contrast between the importance of private schools in British society and the near-absence of serious, policy-making debate, above all on the left.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students and the public routinely consult various published college rankings to assess the quality of colleges and universities and easily compare different schools. However, many institutions have responded to the rankings in ways that benefit neither the schools nor their students. In Engines of Anxiety, sociologists Wendy Espeland and Michael Sauder delve deep into the mechanisms of law school rankings, which have become a top priority within legal education. Based on a wealth of observational data and over 200 in-depth interviews with law students, university deans, and other administrators, they show how the scramble for high rankings has affected the missions and practices of many law schools. Engines of Anxiety tracks how rankings, such as those published annually by the U.S. News & World Report, permeate every aspect of legal education, beginning with the admissions process. The authors find that prospective law students not only rely heavily on such rankings to evaluate school quality, but also internalize rankings as expressions of their own abilities and flaws. For example, they often view rejections from “first-tier” schools as a sign of personal failure. The rankings also affect the decisions of admissions officers, who try to balance admitting diverse classes with preserving the school’s ranking, which is dependent on factors such as the median LSAT score of the entering class. Espeland and Sauder find that law schools face pressure to admit applicants with high test scores over lower-scoring candidates who possess other favorable credentials. Engines of Anxiety also reveals how rankings have influenced law schools’ career service departments. Because graduates’ job placements play a major role in the rankings, many institutions have shifted their career-services resources toward tracking placements, and away from counseling and network-building. In turn, law firms regularly use school rankings to recruit and screen job candidates, perpetuating a cycle in which highly ranked schools enjoy increasing prestige. As a result, the rankings create and reinforce a rigid hierarchy that penalizes lower-tier schools that do not conform to the restrictive standards used in the rankings. The authors show that as law schools compete to improve their rankings, their programs become more homogenized and less accessible to non-traditional students. The ranking system is considered a valuable resource for learning about more than 200 law schools. Yet, Engines of Anxiety shows that the drive to increase a school’s rankings has negative consequences for students, educators, and administrators and has implications for all educational programs that are quantified in similar ways.

Book Breaking Free from Myths About Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Breaking Free from Myths About Teaching and Learning written by Allison Zmuda and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2010-12-08 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What the teacher wants me to say is more important than what I want to say." "If I get too far behind, I will never catch up." "What I'm learning doesn't have much to do with my life, but it isn't supposed to--it's school." These are just some of the many pernicious axioms that keep students from achieving to their potential. In Breaking Free from Myths About Teaching and Learning, Allison Zmuda analyzes and promptly dispels these and other harmful untruths that have inhibited student learning for decades and offers a wealth of ideas for combating them, including * Refocusing learning environments with students' best interests in mind. * Designing engaging lessons that spark students' imaginations. * Motivating students to learn for the joy of it, not just for the grade. * Developing authentic assessments that truly capture the extent of students' progress. * Creating effective school missions that provide both educators and students with achievable objectives. In addition to these strategies, Zmuda offers tips from prominent creative thinkers in a variety of fields on how to approach projects creatively and stimulate fresh thinking. Students have been captive to falsehoods about learning for far too long. This provocative and insightful book shows why it's vital for administrators and teachers to help students shed their faulty assumptions and offers a blueprint for creating more innovative, inviting, and effective schools.

Book Missing Engines of Management Education

Download or read book Missing Engines of Management Education written by Prasad Sundararajan and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 'RETHINKING' to 'REDOING' This book is a SEQUEL to 'Rethinking the MBA: Business Education at a Crossroads', authored by Srikant M. Datar, David A. Garvin, and Patrick G. Cullen, published in 2010 by Harvard Business Press. Declaring business education at a 'crossroads', the HBS teachers-researchers have proposed 'rethinking' the MBA. Hopefully, the purpose of such a 'rethinking' might envisage certain possible-probable "redoing" to drive business education out of the crossroads. If so, if the students are trained to practice at least 30 percent of the concepts-ideas-methods contained in this book, definitely they will imbibe certain extraordinary "knowing" that empower their driving of whatever "knowing," "doing," and "being" envisioned for them. If, if at all, the business schools and management institutes are genuinely concerned, beyond 'trade-mentality', in 'rebalancing' the "knowing" and "doing" and "being" of the MBA students, they may consider the "doing" of training the students in the "doing" of emancipating their 'engines'. The engine of language: sensitizing the students about the 'statistical nature' of language, to rediscover their language, to see the 'intentionality' of concepts, ideas, theories, etc. The engines-of-intellect: training the students in using the framework of 'Variant-Invariant-Linkage-Network-Orbit-Setting' for the "doing" of seeing the referents and referred-to-realities of concepts, ideas, theories, and perspectives; people, entities, things, and phenomena. The engines of 'Double-Creature-Person' to develop an original self-view, world-view, and existence-view. Of course, all of these are almost entirely new and perhaps, original ideas. As usual, new ideas are vulnerable to rejection, especially by the significant ruling powers. Yet, they are published due to the inspiration from the book 'Rethinking MBA'; though they have been verified and found significantly effective with several groups of trainees, students of disciplines including several batches from management, and samples of executives, and managers at all levels. Perhaps, there could be the linkage-network-orbits of destiny too.

Book America s Hidden Economic Engines

Download or read book America s Hidden Economic Engines written by Robert B. Schwartz and published by Harvard Education Press. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five in-depth case studies reveal the innovative practices that position U.S. community colleges as pathways to quality employment. In America’s Hidden Economic Engines, editors Robert B. Schwartz and Rachel Lipson spotlight community and technical colleges as institutions uniquely equipped to foster more equitable economic growth across America’s regions. As Schwartz and Lipson show, these colleges are the best-placed institutions to reverse the decades-long rise in US economic inequality by race, class, and geography. In the book, Harvard Project on Workforce researchers introduce detailed case studies of five institutions—Lorain County Community College in Ohio, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Northern Virginia Community College, Pima Community College in Arizona, and San Jacinto Community College in Texas—that show what is possible when governments, employers, and communities invest in their community colleges’ economic and workforce development mission. These case studies reveal key institutional policies and practices, leadership behaviors, and organizational structures of successful collaborations between colleges and their regional partners in the public and private sector. Each case underscores how, although community colleges face distinct challenges based on local context, successful schools demonstrate a consistent focus on economic mobility and good jobs across all their programs and activities. In a concluding chapter, the editors champion community colleges as the most critical institutions for the future of US workforce development policy.
