This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Practice and Theory, for Steam Engineers The adoption of compound, triple and quadruple expansion engines, necessitating the use of high steam pressures for their economical operation, the rapid increase in the number of high speed, direct connected engines, and the many appliances now found in every first-class plant for the saving of fuel, the rapid generation of steam, and for increasing the life of the machinery, have added much to the care and responsibility of the steam engineer, so that in order to be competent for this kind of work means much more at the present time than it did a few years ago. In order to keep abreast of the times it becomes necessary for those who are in charge of steam plants not only to get as much experience as possible themselves, but also to profit by the experience of others, as in this way it is possible for us to steer clear of the pitfalls which have made failures of the lives of others, and have rendered their efforts for advancement of no avail. The study of well written books, treating the subject that interest the steam engineer, is one of the most advisable ways of gaining knowledge, and that this volume may be considered an addition to those works which have proved to be of interest and value is the sincere wish of the Author. Book Steam Engine Theory and Practice

Download or read book Steam Engine Theory and Practice written by William Ripper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam-Engine Theory and Practice This book is written as a sequel to the author's elementary book on "Steam." It was prepared in the first instance as notes for the second-year engineering students in this college, and deals, in as simple a form as possible, with those branches of the subject which are of fundamental importance to a sound knowledge of steam-engine design and management. Modern students of steam engineering have a great advantage over their predecessors, in possessing such a wealth of recorded practical experience as appears in the Proceedings of the Engineering Institutions, as well as in the Technical Journals, and the writer has to express his personal indebtedness to all these sources of information in the preparation of this book. The assistance received is acknowledged, as far as possible, throughout. Special attention has been given to the subject of the heat quantities involved in the generation and use of steam. For this purpose the temperature-entropy diagram has been used, and its applications in the solution of a number of ordinary everyday problems exemplified. In this connection, as well as for many beautiful graphical methods of illustration now employed by engineers, students and teachers of the subject are greatly indebted to the work of Mr. J. Macfarlane Gray, Capt. H. Riall Sankey, the late P. W. Willans, and many others. The writer desires to express his personal indebtedness to Capt. Sankey for his kindness in supplying him with copies of his temperature-entropy chart, which appears for the first time, as Plate I. of this book.
