Download or read book Improved Seismic Monitoring Improved Decision Making written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved Seismic Monitoringâ€"Improved Decision-Making, describes and assesses the varied economic benefits potentially derived from modernizing and expanding seismic monitoring activities in the United States. These benefits include more effective loss avoidance regulations and strategies, improved understanding of earthquake processes, better engineering design, more effective hazard mitigation strategies, and improved emergency response and recovery. The economic principles that must be applied to determine potential benefits are reviewed and the report concludes that although there is insufficient information available at present to fully quantify all the potential benefits, the annual dollar costs for improved seismic monitoring are in the tens of millions and the potential annual dollar benefits are in the hundreds of millions.

Book Geological seismological Evaluation of Earthquake Hazards at Prompton and Francis E Walter Damsites Pennsylvania

Download or read book Geological seismological Evaluation of Earthquake Hazards at Prompton and Francis E Walter Damsites Pennsylvania written by E. L. Krinitzsky and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A seismic zoning was developed for eastern Pennsylvania and adjacent states based on the geology and the historic seismicity. Floating earthquakes were assigned to those zones in the absence of identifiable active faults. At the Prompton and Francis E. Walter Damsites, motions were far field, Modified Mercalli VI, acceleration 0.12g, velocity 7 cm/sec, and 3 sec bracketed duration> or = 0.05g. Accelerograms and response spectra appropriate to these parameters were selected.

Book Performance Based Seismic Design for Tall Buildings

Download or read book Performance Based Seismic Design for Tall Buildings written by Ramin Golesorkhi and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance-Based Seismic Design (PBSD) is a structural design methodology that has become more common in urban centers around the world, particularly for the design of high-rise buildings. The primary benefit of PBSD is that it substantiates exceptions to prescribed code requirements, such as height limits applied to specific structural systems, and allows project teams to demonstrate higher performance levels for structures during a seismic event. However, the methodology also involves significantly more effort in the analysis and design stages, with verification of building performance required at multiple seismic demand levels using Nonlinear Response History Analysis (NRHA). The design process also requires substantial knowledge of overall building performance and analytical modeling, in order to proportion and detail structural systems to meet specific performance objectives. This CTBUH Technical Guide provides structural engineers, developers, and contractors with a general understanding of the PBSD process by presenting case studies that demonstrate the issues commonly encountered when using the methodology, along with their corresponding solutions. The guide also provides references to the latest industry guidelines, as applied in the western United States, with the goal of disseminating these methods to an international audience for the advancement and expansion of PBSD principles worldwide.
